Clubs normally do a review of a football program when things are wrong.
Normally after a period of intense media scrutiny.

It’s reactive and perhaps staged.

Our last one was in 2016.

I think it’s almost time we did another one.

I love the overall ambition of a last to first rebuild.
Heck, we just did one in the last 20 years.
But they are painful and riddled with resets and course changes before settling into their last ascent.

We had the worst season in our history in 2024 and while we won 5 games in 2025 our percentage - a good gauge of competitiveness - was the same of 2024.
It’s not as good as we think it is and I worry the club is already getting a little cosy with it’s lack of progress.
I think regular external football reviews would be a good way to check in on this rebuild.

Why?

1. It didn’t start as a rebuild. Benny famously said “we don’t rebuild” in 2023. Perhaps we made this decision on the fly and some of the resources required need to be different
2. The rebuild hype is largely built on the back of one (albeit sensational) draft. It was brave and looks promising. But beyond that and hopefully this years draft, our playing largely looks either old or limited. 5 of our top 10 in the B&F are over 30 and we also had Hopper and Taranto in the top 3.
3. Fitness staff. It doesn’t seem like the world class department that we had 10 years ago when it rebuilt Dylan Grimes hammy’s and got our injury riddled team back on track in half 2 of 2019. They were a vital cog in that flag year. There are several players that have looked mismanaged
4. The AFLW and reserves mens programs look poor - AFLW seems unprofessional and lacking energy.
5. Despite our 5 wins, we look completely uncompetitive in blocks of games - 4 game streaks on 2 occasions where we lost by an average of 60 points. The Norf loss late in the year was awful.

We have become increasingly insular in our appointment of key football and non football staff which runs the risk of us not being open minded enough to seeing what is going on externally in the AFL.

There are several ex Tiger players in the systems if other clubs Shedder, Cotchin, Grigg and Rance.
These clubs are all doing well.

Is it time for us to get one of our ex flag champs to lead a major and extensive review of the football program?

I think this should happen next year and I also think we should have waited for a review before extending Yze (or given him one extra year).

It might sound negative but my point is this :-
The scrutiny on the club and football program should match the ambition.
There is no greater ambition in football than last to first.

We are miles behind clubs like Hawthorn and Geelong in attracting talent and we are about lose 6-7 of our premiership players in the next year or two so it might actually get worse before it gets sustainably better.
Let’s not pretend we know everything along the way and make sure we get the right level of external scrutiny on those doing the job today and make sure they are the right people with the right resources to get us there over the next 5-7 years.

calling a external review after losing:

1,600 games + experience
Long standing president
Long standing CEO
Long standing coach

And replacing with new faces in the footy department, 12 new players in 2 years, and a hugely inexperienced side is a massive knee jerk reaction.

External reviews are typically called when poor performances don’t align to where you should be performing at without a reason.

Where we are at in the beginning of a rebuild is par for the course or maybe even fractionally ahead if we are saying 2024 was ground zero and 2025 was the first year of the build.

2027/28 will give a better idea if anything like this is required.

Need to be patient for a couple more years at least. Those who are predicting fast improvement are setting it up so they can have a go at the club once again.

We are years away from the 2017-2020 era.

The club is constantly reviewing things even though there isn't some press release saying that we're conducting a review.

So you are happy to wait until things are completely fkt before reviewing?
That’s the opposite of what I am saying.
I am an advocate for pro active behaviour not knee jerk.

There isn’t anything to review though..

You’re almost searching for things that aren’t there.

We won more than double the games of 2024 against ALL expectations.

Not sure what else people actually want or expect in a fully fledged rebuild.

We need to let things settle and take its course, the club are constantly looking at ways to improve and innovate.

The VFL program seemingly against the odds in 2025 made the finals after winning in the wildcard round when they at times had as few as 3-5 AFL players available. The AFL program won 5 games when expectations heading into the season were that we'd struggle to win a game according to some 'experts'. Sure the AFLW program had a shit year and they have announced an in depth review to the reasons behind that and seem to be in the process of making some adjustments to rectify on field issues.

I would suggest that when Hardwick re-signed and the club knew that we'd be going to employ and untried coach that there would have been an in depth review of where the club is at and whether a full rebuild was required or the rejuvenation continued and it seems that as 2024 unfolded that the plan switched to a full rebuild and we have attacked that in an aggressive manner.

I would also suggest that the extension given to Yze would have been as a result of a review of how things were progressing compared to expectations from when he was appointed and the club can clearly see that they are tracking nicely. Further to that we have also made significant changes to our coaching ranks heading into 2026, with more development coaches being brought in to help fast track the development of the kids, which then allows Yze Carracella Newman Batchelor & Lonergan to focus more on the week to week match day side of things. Add to that the adjustments made to the make up of the list so that it is much better balanced and there isn't much that actually warrants an in depth review of the club.

Maybe the club agreed with some of your concerns . identified speed as a key issue but chose not to broadcast to avoid devulging its plan to opposition clubs and acting on it at this last draft ?

Clubs review all the time, it's just not public.

They would striving and what they did good or bad during 2025. at the end of season.
I am talking about a major review with external parties who can give a broader perspective.
I don’t doubt they would do some internally each year, I am moreso thinking something every 2-3 years that augments that review

Why?
That is exactly the mentality which made us mediocre in the first place.
We’re in a rebuild, which usually takes time, so that’s why. Have a look over the list and the number of kids we have in the side. A full review right now would be a waste of time and money.

The exodus of Senior players in 2024 would have triggered an internal review and reset to the overall strategic plan.

As for an external review after 12 months, this would not be feasible.
  • not enough time had elapsed to properly evaluate progress.
  • could be construed as a lack of faith in the strategic planning.
Considering Richmond won 5 games when most media pundits picked Richmond to be winless, would suggest the overall strategic plan is progressing well and this is supported by the media messaging to date.

Think they are talking about an external review as all clubs do annual review within.
I know what they were talking about, but there really is no need, despite the claims of some we're not a basket case just yet.
