Re: When it rains, it pours...

Poor bloke. Having a great season and has really stamped himself as a leader of the team. If he misses ten weeks from here I can't see much benefit in bringing him back for the last couple of rounds.

I guess Maguire comes back for this week. Staker will return in a few weeks, so he'll probably be expected to play a key defensive role.

Puts a lot of pressure on Patfull, who'd been going okay until last Saturday.

Re: When it rains, it pours...

What shit news, we just cannot take a trick.

The one positive is that at least we have another gorilla backman to come in for him...time to step up to the challenge Goose.

Daniel Merrett is set to miss 8-10 weeks with an acute stress fracture in his back.

Where does this leave the lions, and what impact will it have upon the rest of our season.

Answer: Without the only specialist fullback on the list and with only 1 genuine key defender on the list that is available...Maguire (take a bow anyone who did not like him being drafted)...Patfull can play CHB but is much better as the 3rd tall defender...I would park Mitch Clark at CHB,bring Acorn in at full forward.

If the injuries keep happening to our tall defenders we will be boarding the barbed wire canoe for a trip up that well known creek.

Re: When it rains, it pours...

2011 becomes another season ravaged by injury.

Brown missed 6 games.
Staker has missed 9 so far.
Drummond has missed 8 so far.
Now Merrett to miss 8-10.

That makes it really tough when you compound it with losses of Rischitelli, Brennan, Sherman, Fevola and hell even Proud from the starting 22.

Let throw in X.Clarke who hasn't played yet, Maguire who pulled up with a niggle on the eve of round 1, Polec who's gone for around 6 weeks, and Lester and Beams who are gone for the year. Yes, this lot are arguably not in our best 22, but they are at least fringe players, and their losses give us no valuable depth.

We'll ignore the minor injuries to Rockliff and McGrath, every team loses players for a week or two here or there.

2011 sucks.

Re: When it rains, it pours...

Don't worry OD. McKeever will save us.

Seriously though I wouldn't mind seeing the big Irishman get a game or three from here on. There is really no pressure on now and you would think it could only help his development. It would also help the Lions planning for next year quite a lot you would think if they could get a good bead on where he is at.

Re: When it rains, it pours...

wish him all the best...
I think he is a star and I love watching him play...
It is going to kill your structures though...you guys cant take a trick at the moment.

Agree Quigley...it would be good to get 8 or 10 games into Acorn at full forward this year as well to assess his progress looking to 2011 and beyond.

I was thinking the same thing as I was reading through this thread. It is a good opportunity for McKeever to come in, although I would be betting that they will stick with Maguire for now.

To the regular reserves watches - where does McKeever mostly play? I think I have read he was CHB earlier in the year, but then has had to do some ruck work as well.

Re: When it rains, it pours...

Terrible news, hope it isn't the type of injury that could affect him for an extended period by way of reoccurrence.

He would be close to AA at this stage do it's a real shame that his season is cut short.

Re: When it rains, it pours...

Just unbelievable. Absolutely shattered, for him as a player being in some of the best form he has ever been in, and for us as a team losing such a pillar in our defense.

No doubt we will run with Goose, Patfull and Collier as our defenders. I think if Acorn can keep knocking on the door, and move of Clark down back and Acorn in wouldn't be bad. But first up, you try not to change more than you have to.

Re: When it rains, it pours...

real shame !! he was our best chance for all australian for years.

bad luck mate , you will be missed !!!

Re: When it rains, it pours...

It's not the end of the world, Kevin "Bulldog" Murray played with a back brace fashioned out of leather and still won a Brownlow. Expect Merret to do the same. (But not in leather...unless he really wants to).
