my observations from a neutrul fan

1...Mcleod picking up cheap uncontested possesions across half back wont win you a flag...he must be fwd of centre to really have an impact

2 burton and Roo are vital...we knew that...but today confirmed it beyond doubt

3 For all the plaudits heaped on the crows this year thye have been the hunted every week which can bring extra pressure

4..all is not lost though...though injuries to key players just before finals time isnt what you need..BURTON is your most important cog.....

We still break down up forward and we were beaten around the ball.

I do not think we can win the flag with the current team.

We are not quick enough for some of the better teams and we do not have a key forward who can control the game, like some of the other sides.

Kenny was sheissen hausen today even before he got his hammy.

Bock will not win us a premiership up forward - he needs to go back for our structure to be better. I would even think of putting Rutten up forward and having Bock at Full Back. Christ we have to something different as the present set up is not working well.

Bode - our best forward today. Credit to Bode - he got the job done today.

Welsh - he is in our best 22 but for heaven sake he needs to have someone else up forward who can take a grab.

Edwards - played his heart out. He needs more support from others.

Reilly - does not do enough. Took some good grabs but when the game is there to be won he often goes missing.

Mattner - kept us in the game for much of the day. Probably our most effective player today.

Johncock - made some errors with hand and foot today. Not up to his best of form.

Clarke beaten in ruck , but he did get his hand to the ball on some very important occasions.

Maric - loked like he played yesterday. FFS why did he play yesterday. Craigy's last few weeks have not been good.

Massie - off the pace today. He could be at risk.

Doughty - one of our better performers again today. Kicking for goal has deteriorated though.

Rutten - played quite well, particularly in the first half. Why didnt he have a go up forward.

Bassett - off before he could have an influence.

VB - very very good at times but on a few too many occasions looked likt a rabbit in the headlights.

Goody - tagged out of the game.

Needles - looked slow and had no influence on the game. Why dont we give him some time in the middle?

Hentschell - did some good things - the only tall who looked like he could take a grab up forward.

Shirley - had little infleunce on the game. His days in the team as the number one tagger are beginning to be questioned. Gave up the ball at crucial times.

We have some real hard thinking to do. The coaches need to have a real hard look at their own performance of late. We dont tend to change our structures enough when things are going poorly. FFS our forward line did not function well all day yet we di not do anything about it.

Our lack of leg speed is being shown out atm.

Was very suprised to see Perrie left out when Roo and Burton were outs.

The crows need a get out of jail long forward option when theres pressure on the ball carrier.

You cant have silver service all the time into the forward line in finals.

To put things bluntly: The hacks that surround your good players have finally been exposed through critical injuries.

Please indulge us and tell us who these alleged hacks are.

I dont think the crows can win the flag without Mcleod and roo spending some time in the midfeild

its like the no judd no eagles thing.

cept its no roo and burton no crows.

just shows that judd has the worth of 2 players

Disagree completely.

Was one of the few members of the midfield brigade who could actually hold his head up high in actually making an attempt to combat the white tide and get stuck in.

Where was Reilly? Where was Goodwin? Where was Thompson?

There were far too many shirking the issue once again, yet it's always Shirley who is singled out.

If you want to talk about giving the ball away, let's have a look at our usually immaculate back six. Two HTB goals conceded in the first quarter alone from Rutten and Johncock.

Just an abysmal performance all-round.

Could have been worse Bode should have been dropped

I would have to say that we might not win another game this year :o

We looked very ordinary indeed and lets get real Fremantle at home should have been a thumping.

Agree with Goody (he is entitled to a day off) and Reilly (se other thread), but Thommo worked hard after a very quiet first quarter. But you are right we played poorly yet again.

Shirleys stats are not high though - we are really struggling in the midfield. Good as Doughty has become he will not tear a game apart. We need new blood and new rotations - Skippy, Knighter, Douglas must be looked at seriously next week.

Who will replace Kenny?

Roo possibly. Not too many options - but I would go Rutten and put Bock back in defence.

Not the end of the world guys.

Skippy has to come in on form, he's been playing beautifully, bring him in for Porplysia.

Bring Torney back in.

All of the guys who've played this year have done a great job, and it'll be very hard to drop any of them, but now it's time to get real, and we have to put our best 22 on the field, regardless of how ruthless and mean we have to be.

One thing we are missing though, as has been said, is a midfielder with blinding pace.

The thing is not to panic and stay positive. you cant play reaction footy instead of proactive...with 7 miutes to go you were down 16 points and freo started chipping it around.....why didnt crows flood the freo defense..atleast get men up to the centre....force them to kick to a contest......

It was really obvious what freo were trying to do in thos last 7 mins.....they were not interested in scoring at all...yet the crows sat back think that freo would eventually make a mistake which basically they didnt which cost the crows any chance of winning

Big massive test v Bullies this week...even though the bullies lost last night on the mvg they'll run and run....suddenly from 3 weeks ago crows were unbackable favs for the flag now its an open horse race

amazing how quickly things change.....

What did Porplysia did today?

Skippy will make A difference. He's had 41 touches a week ago, and was excellent for the Eagles yesterday.

We get Roo and a couple of others back, we don't need a player to make THE difference, we just need a bit of tweaking around the edges.

Our midfield is pathetic. Not long ago they were comparing our midfield to West Coast and now week after week we’re getting slaughtered in the clearances. We’re far too slow, make poor decisions and there’s no physical presence in there like Carr and Black are for the Dockers. I’m sorry but to those that defend Shirley every week, I want to know why. What impact does he have on the game, and you honestly believe that Douglas or Pfeiffer wouldn’t do just as good a job?

Our forward line once again is extremely mediocre. Hentschel kicked 3 goals and took some nice marks but he does not insert his authority as much as he should. He has size, pace and great skill which makes him a nightmare for the opposition but he does not make enough contests. McGregor is just hopeless, I don’t care what excuses you make for him and how important you think he is to the structure, he has to have a spell in the SANFL. He is a liability out there, not only does he have no impact but his opponent has no trouble running off him and setting up a forward attack.

Keep the faith. The training taper and the return of Roo, along with the increased match fitness of McLeod, Welsh, Bock, etc will have the Crows primed in September.

sorry that training taper oe extra hard training in the last month does not cut it....you know why because every other club in finals contenetion is doing exactly the same thing.....including freo......the difference is the other teams arent splashing all over the papers...west coast is doing it and so are the swans...100% guranteed

You are more or less saying because your team is tierd and you are battling

which is rubbish...injuries fair enough thats probaly more the reason....and a fwd line which doesnt have much variety...also mcleaod picking up dinky uncontested possession across half back doesnt scare anyone.....Why doesnt Craig throw Mcleod fwd every now and then...or onto the ball for a 10 minute burst.....for all the plaudits of Neil Craig he doesnt come up with much imagination during the game...hey not bagging the guy at all because he's been great but when your getting beaten you have to throw things around a bit i think

It's interesting how much WCE fans take an interest in Adelaide's progress - especially after a Crows loss.

I thought it was an isolated curiosity, restricted to the main board and Bay 13, but clearly the phenomenon is virulent and on the verge of outbreak.

All we're saying is our taper is bigger than your taper :)

You implied that Robert Shirley had a good game today but how could this be so when his primary role in the side is to stop someone and it didn’t happen.

He plays in the midfield as a negative stopper, today his job was Josh Carr and Josh Carr was one of the more influential players in the last quarter for the Dockers, he didn’t do his job so how could have he had a good game? I would give the money to Josh Carr in that duo.

If Robert Shirley’s use of the ball was very good then that is a bonus but don’t forget he is in the side to be a tagger. If he doesn’t do his job he hasn’t had a good game.

Goodwin was tagged by Mathew Carr and Brent Reilly was beaten by Heath Black but we are talking about Robert Shirley and his effectiveness to the Adelaide Crows midfield.
