Strategy Which clubs will adapt better to the new spending environment, and which will suffer?

I wouldn't read too much into one, highly unusual year.

Bigger clubs would cost more to chance direction....more staff and more/bigger pre existing contracts, and every club will have it's own, unique set of circumstances.

You're kidding yourself if you think the arms race would be over though. Clubs that think they can get an advantage will do so. (and the money spent in previous years will frequently still be at play).

and that clubs with double the revenue wont benefit from those extra $$$.

Trevor Nisbett is running a case locally to bring back staff under the soft cap.

Its a footy club, not a social club Nizzy. Why are you sitting on the Financials?

Were they?

Or did North fans wish they were and deluded themselves that the AFL thinks the way they do?

The AFL cares about money. If they really wanted to balance out the $$$ race, we'd see clubs like North playing regularly on Friday night.
It’s hard to play Friday nights and also save the AFL by having Sunday games at Etihad.

Someone has to play Sundays. No one should have a monopoly on fixtures and everyone should share Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights

I agree, to an extent, but the point was that if the AFL really was "hugely worried" about balancing out the money clubs had, they would have done things like this long ago.

If you want to work out what a PR conscious organisation (like the AFL, or political parties, or a number of corporations) really think/care about, then look at their deeds, not their words.

It really comes down to which clubs have the best systems to employ the best talent.

Clubs like North have been running off the scent of an oily rag for years and struggled to employ or develop the best off field coaching staff.

Others like Essendon have tried to bring in proven talent from other clubs. Time will tell if this works for them.

Power clubs like Geelong and West Coast will never struggle in this regard.
