Not a fan of how , like mainstream music , they're moving away from soft rock and embracing EDM/rap/hip hop (amongst my least favourite genres ) whilst continuing to avoid pop rock /country /classical etc

Looking back at it, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2002 and 2008 stand-out to me. As of recent years, 2013 was the last one that had just as many decent songs as bad/uninspiring ones (although not up there with the best).

The only reason why there was a fuss over Swift getting votes because third-party websites such as Buzzfeed encouraged people to vote for her. If it wasn't for them, Triple J probably would have allowed her to be on the list had she received enough votes but when the likes of Buzzfeed and KFC interfere, it's kind of cheating.

Scanning the top 10s, I would say 1996 (though most of the early 90s charts were good) and 2007 were among the best, 2008 was probably the last one to have a fairly solid 10.

1997 is my personal favourite, mainly because of the cd - no aphrodisiac, beautiful people, one angry dwarf..., down again, walking on the sun, crazy, leaving home, freak, prisoner of society, paranoid android, monkey wrench. All on cd one.

You mean they weren't big?

And it's hardly like the J's wouldn't have backed them back then. Just that it was only available in Sydney until the late 1980's IIRC.

I didn't like those years either. Triple J (like music in general really) has gone downhill
Depends on your definition of mainstream- I certainly consider Kanye mainstream...but at the end of the day, some of the other entries demonstrate that Triple J aren't averse to mainstream......as long as they perceive it as hipster. EDM/Hip-Hop/Rap are given a look-in whilst Pop/Soul/Country/Classical is snubbed, even if they're Aussie and/or up and coming (and even though the latter genres are hardly mainstream).

That theory doesn't quite work for me as that corresponds to mid late 00s for me ie 2004-10. It's ok, but still not my favourite era (My favourite era's mid 90s to early 00s ie 1995-2003 stuff) .
It's the 2010s stuff which I dislike.
