Lynch is getting shafted with these nominations.

Top ten avg contested marks last season:

1. Lynch
2. Hawkins
3. Hogan
4. Gawn
5. Hooker
6. Cloke
7. Casboult
8. Sandilands
9. Butcher
10. J Riewoldt

Total numbers of contested marks isn't the same as percentage of marking contests won. Key forwards are going to be in more contested marking situations than midfielders. And the total contested mark stat also unfairly punishes forwards who are good at creating separation. So the test should really be the % of contested marks won in contested situations.

The 2 standout contested marks in the league by that measure are Fyfe and Josh Kennedy.

Fyfe, Cloke and Casboult for me.

McGovern is our best. Interestingly he dropped from 2.31 contested marks per game in 2014 (3rd in the league) to only 1.2 this year. Which also shows how good he was at his job to peel off his opponent and take intercept marks, turning potential contests into uncontested marks.

Fyfe is on his own IMO - if he's pushed forward for more prolonged periods next year he'll monster, move and leap over his opponents.

He's reeling in respectable numbers despite spending 80% of his time running through the middle,

Lake would've been up there. Easily the best Hawthorn has had in recent memory.

Now for us it would probably be McEvoy. Gibson, Gunston and Stratton also but only against guys their size.

Then you also have to factor in who they are marking against. Fyfe takes some amazing contested marks but most of them are not against key position backmen who are generally the hardest to take a contested mark against. Lynch/Cloke/Hawkins have to take them 1-on-1 versus the best high ball defenders in the game on a weekly basis. Fyfe would only find himself matched up on these types of players for a few minutes here and there in some games and would go games at a time never having to compete in the air against them.

Kennedy getting separation is the very definition of an uncontested mark- although he is very capable when he doesn't get separation.

Cloke is still probably the best for me when he is on, he would just be another player without this skill.

Cloke for me. Hawkins gets his majority in 1v1s when he can just rag doll his opponent. Cloke takes both 1v1 and pack marks. Casboult is similar to Cloke in that regard.

Carlisle, McGovern and Lynch arent far behind those three. All take the ball at its highest point and time their jumps in packs perfectly.

Fyfe has brilliant hands but rarely does he have someone good in the air defending him. If he spends more time at FF next year he can potentially lay claim to this.

Taylor Walker would be up there if he didn't do his knee.

He was just about ready to rip shit up. He was just about back this year, reckon he'll be even better next year.

Would be lucky to be in the best 300
That might be overstating it a bit.

Gunston is probably the Hawks best on a kilo for kilo basis. The guy is built like a string bean, but can still use his body quite well.
