The art of big contested marks is becoming less of a skill teams draft given the running style game. But how important do we see it during Finals? Who are the best 3 in league? Ignore kicking ability

1. J Roughead
2. N Riewoldt
3. T Cloke
Best speccy is gonna be howe tho

Charlie Dixon has to be in the conversation.

Will be dominated by Max King over the next decade.

Currently Tom Lynch & Max Gawn you would say.

Comfortably in 2022, his average per game was easily the most of any player.

Lobb a few years ago took 8 against us and we took 5 as a team. He kicked 4 goals too.

Lynch was massive this year but his best game was against Hawthorn when we had Sicily in the middle and forward and we had a 4th gamer on him. Once Sicily moved back Lynch got a single touch more.

His equal best game was againat West Coast who were witches hats this year.

Depends on the type/situation.

  • If you’re looking for a 3rd up Mark of the year candidate: Howe
  • If you’re looking for someone to drop into the hole: Gawn
  • If you’re giving someone a running jump at the ball: Lynch
  • If you’re talking a one on one wrestle in the goal square: Hawkins

That's fine, everyone played those teams. His average this year us comfortably better than anyone else.

Lynch’s actual average per game played when you remove the whole game at least he missed from being subbed off 3 times, once early in first term, is a shade under 3.5 contested marks per game in 2022. One player ever has beaten even his official average of 3.26 per game since this stat has been recorded from 2010. That was Travis Cloke in 2011. His average was a remarkable 3.8 but he played every game, so in reality, all time(2010 onwards) best individual seasons it would be:

3.8 Cloke 2011
3.5 Lynch 2022(adjusted for being subbed off)
3.2 Dixon 2020(adjusted upward for shorter matches)

Nobody else has averaged above 3 per match in the last 13 seasons. Rough estimate median leader in this stat each year is around 2.6 average.

Multiple winners of average contested marks:

4 Cloke(stat not kept roughly first half of his career)
3 Lynch
2 Taberner

Nobody else has won it multiple times but single season winners were McGovern, Hawkins, Dixon, McKay.

So Lynch you would have to say has he best record both career and 2022 of all current players. Taberner may surprise some but it is one of the reasons I rate him highly.

As for Lynch's 2022 performance, if you remove his 8 v Eagles and 7 v Hawks, and also remove his 2 lowest to counter this, including one being subbed off first term, you are still left with 47 marks from 15 matches at 3.1 average per match. The next highest is Gawn on 2.5 per match and there are only 7 other players above 2 per game average. So Lynch was head and shoulders above all others in 2022, it wasn’t just an accident of him destroying a couple of weaker opponents.
