Re: Who is our best tager?

Interesting question?

Wellingham did a bit of a job on GAJ last year but I've not seen him specifically given another tagging job.
Johnno got the same job this year until his leg fell off (not GAJ related).

Who is/are our prospective taggers?

I know Daisy got a couple of run with jobs earlier this years...

Re: Who is our best tager?

There would be 8 or so players on our list that could be better taggers if they were given 12 - 16 rounds of football just playing that roll... as it stands Footy classifieds is right.

FWIW those 8 or so players are better in their roles as it is.

Could Toovey become the Presti of the tagging role? That is the question!~

Didn't Wellingham get toweled up by him in the Pre-Season?

I am hoping the club is thinking of developing Barham as a tagger. I really really really really think he can make it as a tagger and hopefully be one of our future key taggers in the team. Heck all he needs to do is run around and stick to em like a leech who needs to learn how to kick if you can do that!

Re: Who is our best tager?

Alright, I'll ask... what's a 'Tager'? Is it a mix between a large striped cat and an expensive watch?

Re: Who is our best tager?

toovey or Barham..... Toovey does well on those dangerous small forwards whereas I think Barham could be a very good tagger for the gun midfielders, if given time to learn the craft....

Re: Who is our best tager?

Pebs??
He might not have the indurance but if he can knock them out at the first bounce we're laughing..

FWIW if footy classified was talking about a midfield tagger its not toovey, he's a small defender and playing well in the role. Personally i dont think theres anyone in the firsts who even looks like a tagger except for maybe Thomas. It could be a good idea because as it stands he has no idea how to be a consistent mid and the players he plays on will teach him. We know they wont be able to get away from him and he can hurt them the other way. I like him on the half back line tho.

Maybe O'Bree could be moulded to extend his career, we know he lays a lot of tackles (dont all stick tho)??

NOT BARHAM!!!! Until his kicking improves 800% he shouldn't even be thinking about peeling the oranges for the firsts. Look at all the league's best taggers - they are all good footballers. What's the point in beating your opponent to the ball if when you get it you give it straight to another opponent 9/10. Invariably taggers get a lot of touches and we can't afford that. We shouldn't be selecting crap players because "you dont need to be good to play that role", we will never win a premiership (which i can see on the horizon now) that way..

Clinton Jones is probably the best tagger in AFL at the moment and he doesn't exactly have good skills, probably better than Barhams though.

Re: Who is our best tager?

When Barham learns some basic skills he'll be the man. Toovey also could make the grade but for the moment MM prefers him in the back pocket or on a flank rather than as an on ball defender.

We dont really have a tagger at present, but instead we have a very accountable midfield who put pressure on the opposition at all times.

(Edit. Pre injury Ben Johnson was filling a genuine tagging role. However whether he'll return to our best 22 is yet to be seen. Perhaps he will be brought in against the gun sides who have megastar midfields).

Actually because his kicking is crap Barham could be a perfect tagger because he shouldn't be relied on to hit leading targets. A tagger is to negate an opponent. Jaxson seems to run all day. Very, very quick off the mark. Knows how to find it. very good tackling technique. In and under. Has shown can hand ball under pressure.

His kicking to a lead is probably the worst in the league. A tagger is a good option IMO.

Re: Who is our best tager?

With the exception of a quarter on Yablett, when Yablett was basically floating around the forwardline, who has he tagged?

Like I said, maybe he gets brought out into that role just for the mega midfields where we need a extra defensive body, preferably a hardened body rather than a skinny 20 year old. Pretty sure he performed similar roles last year against teams like Geelong.

this year no one

But for all of 06 and the early part of 07 when he had form he tagged quite a bit

I think he'll take a while before he is fit enough to run with Gablett again..
Re: Gablett..am I wrong in my memory that Wellingham was very good on him in 07?

I think someone was also questioning Johnno's "hardness" as well.

I reckon he was good in the role 06'07 but can't see him being a this year tagger for a while yet.

Do we really need to tag v the Swans.
Surely simply going man on man has done the job before?

Agree with Pie eyed that we don't need a tagger for the swans game, as you've pointed out man on man has worked consistently in the past. I would suggest however that special attention to run with Goodes is needed as he is in great form. I don't think Toovey would be able to go with him though whether he is up forward or in the guts.

Barham is our best tagger currently, but he isn't much else because his disposal is poor.
Toovey is a decent, quick, negating medium defender, but I don't like him playing in the midfield.
Wellingham has shown signs of being able to play as a midfield tagger, but much like in his general play, he's inconsistent.

Then you've got the likes of Francis, MacAffer and others who are theoretically potential taggers, but we have no idea whether they can do the job.

i would say Jackson from Richmond is on form the best tagger going around, he is killing everyone and taking some massive names while getting a fair bit of the ball himself. Would be leading Richmond's B&F probably

Barham is most definitely the man-boy for the joblette. His tackles stick and there are plenty of them - dish off by hand and learn to kick better but his speed and terrier like attack is not paralleled at Pie-land.

He hasn't been given much of a chance for the past few weeks but I reckon from what we've seen Beams is the best option we have for a tagging role. His tackles stick, he can run all day, has great peripheral awareness, is fearless and not intimidated by anyone, reads the play beautifully and is very good by hand or foot. Did I mention that he is quick and hard as nails as well?

Well even so Jones is up there in the top two or three this season which is remarkable because I thought he looked liked a spud last season.

Daisy?
It's a big job but it could be his calling.
He is quick and agile enough.
Has the tank for it and has the ability to hurt the Swans if he can win possession. He reads the play pretty well.

He has looked a bit like a player without a task of late.
Let's give him one.
