I am not actually going to answer the question, but just want to make a point.
A lot of people seem to be commenting that we haven't introduced anyone this year/last year, or have anyone on our list not playing at the moment, who will replace Goodwin/Edwards/McLeod/Burton etc.

It doesn't really work like that. The replacements for the stars will have to come from the Vinces/Tippetts/Porplyzias etc.

Then you need McKays/Ottens/Dangerfields to become the 'new' Vinces.

And what you really need from the newcomers is to fill their role a la McKay/Ottens/Dangerfield.

It is silly to say that they haven't planned for the replacement of Edwards et al; If they had someone as good as Goodwin on the rookie list, I daresay they would be playing now.

Thank you for listening.

dogs.

It is difficult to say. We have recruited Tall in the past few drafts and apart from Dangerfield the other potential midfield candidates Sloane, Martin, Mackay and Otten are unfortunately injured. It is great to blood youth, if they are the ones to take us forward. But the good ones are all injured :(.

Someone down at the AFC seriously must have kicked a cat under a ladder into a mirror.

Why would you just assume they will get delisted and need to be replaced?

I recon they have another 3 or 4 good years in them. We don’t need to replace them with Neil in charge

Goody = Symes/Otten/Davis
Macca = Petrenko/Schmidt
Edwards = Danger
Burton = Walker
Dogga = VB/Sloane??

and

Hentschel = McKernan/Moran/Sellar

Just a guess. But life will go on once we see our oldest five retire

In any case, we're going to see a very different outfit wandering around the paddocks next year.

I'm operating under the assumption that Goody will go on for one more year, but Edwards, McLeod, Doughty, Burton, Hentschel, Jacky and Griffin will all be departing the scene of the crime.

As of R4, that lot represents 1096 games of experience:
McLeod (332)
Edwards (315)
Doughty (170)
Burton (174)
Hentschel (71)
Griffin (31)
Jacky (3)

It includes 4 of our 6 most experienced players (the exceptions being Goodwin & Johncock).

Considering the whole team has only 2853 games of experience, we're talking about losing around 38% of our team's experience in one hit. Overnight our list as a whole will become one of the youngest and least experienced in the league, as will our best 22.

Problems would appear to be compounded if the rumours regarding Scott Thompson turn out to be true, given that he's 7th on the list with 159 games of experience. Lose him as well and we're looking at being down 44% of our team's experience in one hit.

2011 is certainly going to be a VERY interesting time.

The older stars will keep playing on for years to come is Craig is still coach. We all know he prefers experienced players to the younger players. He has no idea about how to develop young players properly and I get the feeling he is more concerned about his own position and not the club. If we continue on with him as coach we may make the finals regularly but we wont win a flag under him.

I agree and get the feeling that if the club tells him we have to have a major clean out – he will quit.

If they don't he will find a way to justify keeping the big 4 again.

That's just reactive rubbish and you know it. If things continue as they are now, Goodwin will be our only player aged 30+ on the list next year. It's almost inconceivable for any other outcome.

Craig has done a very good job of developing our youngsters. He just hasn't thrown out the baby with the bathwater, as our most reactive posters would have done years ago. Lets not forget that he was coming off a very low baseline when he took power - Fungus Watts was the only teenager on our entire list at the time.

How do you know we won't win a flag under him? Bomber Thompson was in charge of Geelong in 2000. He didn't win the flag until 2007, having missed out on the finals entirely in 2006.

This comes across as an over-reaction to Walker being dropped. You seem to have over-hyped and exaggerated your point.

If Goodwin is the only player aged 30+ on our list next year we're screwed because that means we'd be getting rid of Mcleod, Edwards, Doughty, Burton and possibly Griffin, Hentschel and Jacky. Thats 4-7 players = 4-7 draft picks in the most compromised draft to date. Gees we want get much return for pick 160 :o.

Because we lacked the foresight to stagger the retirements of the older guys and didnt account for such a bad year in 2010 this is really gonna impact massively on our next few years.

I think we'll need to keep Mcleod, Goodwin and Doughty and delist Edwards & Burton (whom we have enough alternatives). We must stagger the retirements during these compromised drafts. Dont want 7 picks in a crap draft.

No it doesn’t because we have 3 or 4 rookies who will get up graded. Henderson, ect, ect

It's not quite that bad. I'd also expect Schmidt, Jaensch, Henderson and possibly Thompson to all be upgraded off the rookie list. That reduces things to a manageable 3-4 selections. Given that the draft is supposed to be a fairly good (deep) one, that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Yeah, well, it's not like we haven't know that this was coming for years now. They had the chance last year to manage things, so that we didn't lose all our experience in one hit. They chose to chase a premiership instead. That choice didn't pay off and now we're about to pay the price.

  • McLeod's output has been well down this year, though his disposal has been much better than it was for much of 2009. Very hard to see him persevering in 2011, particularly if he manages to make it to 350 this year.
  • It's too late to do the staggering now. We've run out of time and options. The staggering should have taken place last year.
  • It's not a crap draft, it's actually rated as being a very good draft. It's just that GC are taking 1/3 of the 1st round - after that it's pretty much normal, with much better depth than the 2009 abomination.
  • We won't be having 7 selections, because we'll be upgrading a number of rookies.

Neil's between a rock and a hard place.

if he ditches the old guys, and says we need to step back to move forward he should, and probably will, get the arse.

if he leans too heavily on them, demonstrating they're critical to his plan, then I am not sure they can shoulder that burden.

doesn't seem to be a clear path to take at the moment.
