Lehmann would hav to be very unlucky not to get back in when Steve goes......however it is tempting to throw Clarke in....I'm usually against the throwing of youth in for the sake of it (with batsmen), but Clarke just may be the exception......so having said that.Lehmann back in for Katich;)

We threw in the likes of Warne, Ponting, Langer, Martyn, Steve Waugh, and lots more in the deep end very early on in their careers, didn't do them much harm, did it?

Apart from Warne, the others struggled, and were in and out of the Australian team until they matured, both as people and batsmen.

And Waugh benefited from playing in an appalling Australian side for a number of seasons. Until the Ashes tour in '89, his record was, to put it extremely kindly, modest.

in what regard? he was doing what he was called on to do. He was getting regular 50's and getting wickets.

He was dropped for poor form. That may have been a subtle hint from the selectors that he wasnt, in fact, doing what he was called on to do.

Every player gets dropped in their career, nothing wrong with that. But before he was dropped, fact remains that his bowling was the major factor in our winning of the 87 world cup, and he was picked when WSC took a lot of our players away, and he did a very good job, a very gutsy job through a lean period for Australia.

Clarke is a bit different, he's played in the One Dayers, scored a lot of runs (a lot of vital runs when the team needs it), and he doesn't seem to be overwhelmed by the pressure of playing for his country, so you'd suspect he can be slotted in seamlessly in the Test lineup.

I think you're getting your history a bit confused here.

WSC was 1977-79.

Waugh made his international debut in 1985.

There was a rebel tour of South Africa which robbed Australian cricket of about 14 players the previous year - but it was not certainly nothing to do with WSC.

Thank you, I stand corrected.

Test cricket is a big jump, even from one day internationals. Those players that were listed before were all genuine young stars. Damien Martyn had sublime written all over him as a youngster, but for whatever reason, he couldnt maintain the standard at Test level. He's come back now a much more mature player, and his contributions have been immense. This, because he's had time to mature at state level.

These players are very relevant examples IMO. If Clarke can come back next season and average 50-60 in Sheffield Shield, then he's proven his worth, and perhaps he'll get a crack at the Test side. He might have to do it again the following year too. Until then, I dont see the value in promoting him ahead of more credentialed (and dare I say, worthy) players like Love or Boof.

Marcus North..the selectors dont pick victorian's unless they moves states eg..simon cook, adam dale, Stuart Law, Peter McIntyre, Brad Williams

Time to add Marcus North to that List;) :D

Seriously i think the kid can play. We could do worse.

It should be in this order:
1. Lehmann- deserves to walk back into that side
2. Love- Unluckt to be dropped for Katich. Has done nothing wrong.
3. Hodge- in form batsmen, probably would need Martyn to be injured.
4. Clarke- give him another year or two

Clarke will get it- NSW and one of the 'pretty boys' means he will probably take the spot.

Clarke hasn't done enough yet to get in. He only averages 38 for NSW with a highest of 134. There are guys like Love and Lehmann who have been averaging over 50 in first class cricket for years. They should get the nod ahead of him at the moment.

Maybe a few years down the track.

He deserves to remain part of the one-day squad though.

People don't read the question right.

There is a difference between who SHOULD and who WILL replace Waugh.

IMO who should and will are the same person....Martin Love.

What was that famous quote by Hooksey at the start of the season? You might as well give a bloke a baggy green when he breaks into the NSW side or something?

Intelligent man that Hookes fella.

BTW, Martin Love is my should and will too.

Wow, a massive 2 people out of 27:rolleyes:

I'd go with Boof for the time being if fit, followed by Love, Hodge and Clarke.

I'd want Clarke in for the reason that P&P stated, he is the future of Australian cricket.

So are the Under 17 team

Should we play them.

Lehmann Love and Hodge are all ahead of Clarke in my view. Possbily even Hussey.
