The Toughest

GEELONG coach Chris Scott has labelled Joel Selwood "probably the toughest footballer I've ever seen".

"[Brisbane Lions legend] Michael Voss was pretty tough, but I'd put them on a par."

Love Selwood. Adore Vossy. Both sensational footballers who attack the contest like a hungry seagull on a discarded chip.

Who was tougher? Who would you pick for your current team?

Tough call can't lose with either. When they mention the Voss Hird and Buckley comparison Voss is number 1 dud to his toughness. Disgrace that he wasn't rightly awarded the 02 Norm Smith.

Don't bring that up, bound to bring up a Brissy vs Pies stoush about who deserved it...

Despite the fact that Vossy obviously earned it.

Sel is more courageous than tough, if yuno what I'm saying.

Like, he takes it, but doesn't always dish it out.

on football ability i would take selwood, but i like voss better to create a hard contest

Selwood more reckless- Zero fear factor.
Voss more lethal. Saw him put Corey into hospital for a shoulder with a bump that was ferocious yet fair.

Voss and Burns hit and subsequent goal assist is better (as much as it pains me to say it).

Voss is a ****ing tank though and has 8 kg on Kerr.

Voss is definitely more durable and would probably bounce off a truck only shepherd a team mate.

Kerr's not huge and is often doubled over behind play after getting cleaned up, and apparently his body's about shot. But he still dives under packs before anyone else, as shown in the video WCErevival posted.

Voss is tougher than Troy Selwood.

Another example of bigfooty's equivalent of the recency effect. Voss has been out of the game more than 5 minutes so you can automatically deduct 75% of the poll votes he would've otherwise received. Selwood is one of the toughest modern-day players, but he's not fit to shine Vossy's shoes.

Wow.

Gavin Brown and Paul Kelly would make them both look soft.
Out of the two,
VOSS BY A MILE.

This. :thumbsu:

J Brown is the hardest, toughest, most courageous player to ever put on boots, Matthews said Brown is the most courageous player to play in his time in footy.

A 6'5 105kg CHF the toughest, most couragous ever eh? He goes back with the flight occasionally but no more than the likes of Carey did or Riewoldt does & his tough guy antics early in his career were to belt small blokes like Carr or hit truely courageous players like Chris Grant from behind. Once the ball hits the deck he's out of the contest & he rarely ever finds himself on a bottom of a pack. Goes to show how overated he is if someone of Matthews stature believes that to be the case. Some former teamates might even be miffed.

Back on topic, Selwood every day of the week over Voss as a ball player. After his Brownlow win Voss did tend to exagerate contact if he got a bump, the Burns clash being a perfect example. Voss definately had a nasty streak in him though. He rarely missed the chance to pick someone off when given the opportunity. Being an AFL darling probably saved him from a few suspensions.

its an odd concept in a way, who isnt tough out there? its a brutal game.

I think selwood is amazing with his relentless attack on the ball, he has no fear, but if I have to split these two I would say Selwood gets knocked down more (he always gets back out there of course)

Felt like Voss could get hit by a truck on the street and the truck would be going in for repairs while he went on his merry way, he was one of the best players to pull on the boots at his peak. Think we forget just how good he was because his body was shot by the end and he played out of victoria.

You either go when you have to or you don't. The media only pick up on the ones that get injured and label them as the toughest.

Plenty of players just as tough as Selwood, Brown etc. They just don't knock themselves out every chance they get.

Its Selwoods Blind courage and resilliance vs Voss' to intimidate through the contest and on field presence. Different types of toughness both great.

Voss Vs Rooke in handing out the punishment, thats a Poll and a 15 Round thriller i'd love to see set up.

Voss comfortably.
