Whose reputation has changed since the Cup?

Obviously Efficient has. I thought Mahler was massive, having only his 8th race start.

MO lose any admirers?
Not really, he won a Caulfield Cup.. He just couldn't run the distance. He will still go on to be a great horse :thumbsu: Mahler - Amazing stayer, great things to come. Zipping - Lived up to its hype; ran 4th.

We'll see how MO goes next year, once the Syd horses come back from holidays. ;)

Looks like Vlad was to cocky. I like when he was introduced to the crowd, he celebrated and applauded himself like he won the race. I knew then the horse had no chance. :D

Mahler showed a lot of quality. Could easily dominate Europe and perhaps come back here and win (style of racing is a bit different, looks to be suited to Britain)

I think between now and next years Cup, Mahler will win some quality races. He will probably have to carry the grandstand.

MO's reputation has definitely changed. Showed he couldn't stay the 2 miles.

I reckon there are a few posters on this forum who have damaged reputations after the Cup too!

What was the time in the cup?

I can't believe how big of a run Mahler's was. Usually they slow the speed down around the back of the course, but it looked as though they went fairly hard the whole way up front, and Mahler was still able to stick on for 3rd.

You mean like the tool who said these pearlers

Efficient - Massively overhyped dud who hasn't done anything since the Derby. Hell no.

Master O'Reilly - Best stayer since Carbine and Phar Lap. Won the Caulfield Cup doing cartwheels. Wanted more reign so he could do another lap or 3. Will win.

It's interesting isn't it. A poor run from Master O'Reilly and suddenly he can't run two miles.

He was very strong on the line in the Caulfield Cup, no?

One crack for one failure doesn't prove anything in my book.

On a Jeune ran a blinding second to the greatest stayer of recent times two years ago. How did he go today? He ran nineteenth last year. Can he stay or not?

Master O'Reilly was very disappointing today, undoubtedly. However, my own feeling is that it is far too early to be writing him off as a genuine stayer.

Likewise, I wouldnt be writing him off just yet at the distance.

He is also pretty lightly raced & you would think he will come back a Bigger & Stronger horse next prep. I reckon the 2 miles this year will harden him up for an assault next year.

I won a heap of money on Efficient today because I took him in an early double with El Segundo.
Would I have backed him today?
Absolutely no way in the world.

Didn't have a hope going in on form. You might as well back Zipping.
However Efficient did get up and win.

So what does this tell us?
This race is a shocking race to bet in yet is the biggest race of the year.
Australian horses just don't have long distance races that often so it really is a guess at best.

Does the best horse win the Melbourne Cup?
Of course not Efficient can't get close to anything but in this particular race it looks at home.

I ended up winning because of an early doubles bet I took but this race is really just a one off .
No form needed.:(

Same here mate.

I spent $50 on doubles before the Caulfield Cup.

Had $5 on Master OReilly into Efficient at 90/1 , so will collect $450. Efficient was almost Cup fav then, just shows you. Had doubles going also with Master O'Reilly, On A Jeune, Zipping, Maybe Better( That was money lost before the race jumped) & Eskimo Queen in the Melb Cup.

Otherwise, didnt have a bet on Efficient. Backed Mahler, Purple Moon & Princess Coup for Win just to cover myself, but still was a nice result.

Cant complain :thumbsu:

I agree, i can't complain either .
I bet a lot bigger then that and only had 2 doubles going in with Efficient and Master O'Reilly.
My doubles were Cox Plate / Melbourne Cup and i got 50/1 Efficient.

I'm happy with my collect but i was just making the point that this race is really a one off in terms of following form going in.
