This all started with the death of ministerial accountability.

Look to the 60s, 70s, and 80s. If a ministers Dept ****ed up, they were booted. Reason being they were ultimately responsible for the conduct of their Dept.

Howard made the convention a code of conduct, and promptly lost 6 (?) ministers. When the 7th (?) came up, he couldn't afford to lose another, so he booted his code of conduct. Since then, the PS have paid the price, even when it's the minister who screwed the pooch.

Same has happened for personal conduct. * up and Menzies, Whitlam, Fraser, Hawke had you booted. They couldn't afford the bad press. Now we just shrug, or at worst wet lettuce the matter (scomo likes the temporary demotion, assuming punters forget when they get promoted again).

This is all our fault, because we have rewarded multiple govts for not holding their polis accountable

It's telling that he originally went for a career in journalism but realised he couldn't be impartial, so went into politics instead.
