Just came back from a 7 month around the world trip, and Im coming under pressure to get back to work, for the life of me I cant figure out why.

Has anyone else had the same experience as me and how did you handle it?

Pressure by who? Centrelink or your wife and/or family?

I am pretty much in the same situation as you except I have been working overseas, I will return to Australia in a few weeks after a year of working in Korea teaching English.

I got a job. Hippie.

LOL, there seems to be two kinds of hippies. There are the lazy types that sit around smoking pot, then there are the middle class behemian types that are actually creative and quite hard working working. Many of the latter hippies work as university staff, writers, coffee shop owners, co-op business managers, actors, artists, performers, NGO managers, etc.

But seriously, why are you surprised? You've just had a 7 month holiday. Is it any wonder people are questioning why you're still bludging?

See for me, I dont see the difference
I spent 7 months doing nothing overseas besides partying , so what is the difference to me doing it over here

I am not sure how to answer this, but I will do my best.

I think if you go overseas for a holiday at least you are learning something. When you go to a new country you can learn a lot just by walking down the street and seeing the differences with your own country. You can see different cultures, different products, different ways of doing things, different languages, different architecture, etc. When you are overseas you are always learning and expanding your understanding of the world.

Are you mooching off someone? Or is it a self-funded indulgence? If it's the first, then you have your answer.

Like suetonius says, it's sort of accepted in our society that while you're overseas there's some value in it - learning stuff, immersing yourself in other cultures, broadening your mind, that sort of shit. It's almost a rite of passage. Also, because you're overseas, it is presumed to be a finite period - at some point you will come home and get your shit together like the rest of us.

When you're unemployed and partying at home, you're just a bludger.

Just curious, how much did this 7 month trip cost?

I have the opposite problem.

I have never wanted to travel overseas, whether it be an overseas working holiday in the UK or a week in Bali. I never have done, never will do. People always said I would regret not travelling when I was in my 20s - I have no regrets at all. I have not the slightest interest in overseas travel.

Yet when I say to people I don't have any desire to travel, they act like its really weird.

I envy you for having tastes that are simply satisfied. It's certainly cheaper to not be interested in overseas travel.

Me, I spend all my time scrimping and saving for my next trip.

I'm sick of funding your hedonistic lifestyle, CakeEater. Party is over.

Get a job to fund my middle class welfare.

Couple of great posts here.

I've little interest in overseas travel so I get the same weird looks/awkward conversations that emuboy gets but I do what Caesar does, spending all my time saving and anticipating my next Australian travel adventure...

I'm glad somebody else understands this.

I also enjoy travelling to different Australian destinations.

I like how you described the exact scenario so we could give an opinion on it! If you aren't mooching off anybody and can afford it, who cares.

You can't have regrets over something that you've never done. It's only once you've actually travelled overseas that you could say in retrospect whether you should or shouldn't have gone when you were younger.

That said, I've never wanted a week in Bali either.

Well, a lot of people don't like people who live off social security. Most people view it as a safety net for people who can't get a job, not an opportunity for people to bludge.
