Why is it 4 points for a win, 2 points for a draw not 2 and 1?

Have tried to search but struggle with the key words.

Have always wondered why the AFL ladder gives 4 points for a win and 2 for a draw when it would have exactly the same effect to award 2 for a win and 1 for a draw?

I assume something changed at some point?

I think there've been threads on this topic on here before, with a few plausible speculations but no conclusive answers. I can recall reading that it might have its origins in the early days of the VFA, when there was a premier declared, but there wasn't a formal schedule of games, so clubs would just play whichever opponents they organised to play - so games against "junior" teams would count for less than games against "senior" teams. No idea if that's actually the correct explanation, but it would make some sense...

It's so when they bring in the bonus point for scoring over a hundred they have somewhere (3) to drop the points for a win to.

4 (bonus point win), 3 (win), 2 (draw)

I've always wondered about the 4 points as well.

But really, does anyone really look at the points anymore? I just goes on wins and losses.
