i went to the lions v eagles game in round 5 with two japanese guests. i was asked by one of them why a is a point called a behind. it was suggested to me that it would make more sense to call it a beside. any thoughts...?

from memory the 2 point posts used to be the corners of the field (think of the little flags on a rugby pitch. So the ball went "behind" the line between the goal and the point post (the gap was very big).

I read that somewhere....cannot remember where

Because the bll goes behind the post on most occasions ie, watching a kick from 40m out straight on, the ball will pass the goal post behind it, not in front. (this only works when the point is kicked on the side that the player is kicking from (i think????))

When you the miss, the ball goes behind the bigger posts. IIRC, Rex Hunt always says 'The Ball goes behind the big post' when someone misses. I used to listen to 3AW all the time last year, but haven't listened to it once this year. I've switched to MMM.

Big Rex always says "the ball goes behing the stick"

Discussions of where football terminogy comes from too high-brow for you?

possibly the highest brow coldpastie! it is a very pointless discussion! Whyd they call it a Torpedo punt? Cos it spins like a torpedo....wowwwwww thats cool

Why do they call it a speccy? Cos its short for special and some drunk bloke at a bar thought it would be a good way to define a high mark.

Its like everything, football terminology is just words that people have made up and that have stuck who gives a poo. YOU COLD PASTIE!

Bzzzzzzzzzzzzz, WRONG!

"Speccy" is short for "spectacular mark". This term actual predates Bruce McAvaney :)
