Will Essendon win the Flag ?

They are better than last year, but it's a bit premature to say they can win a flag, they have beaten the teams they should - Bris, Port, NM and GC, and beat us, who let's face it, prob should have lost to Freo and looked absolutely shithouse against GWS. A top 4 team prob would have destroyed us the last few weeks.

They have a bloody tough second half of the year, I think that will be the true test of where they're at. I still think to win a flag you need to win games on the road against decent opposition. The teams who have won flags over the last decade have traveled really well.

I agree with this Kooz. How a team performs on the road against the top teams is usually a good indication of how they will go in the finals.
During the H&A you can get ahead of yourself with good upsets but when the finals heat is turned up you will soon be found out. This comment is not directed soley at Essendon, it goes for everyone.

I love how each week there is a new favourite.

Sydney last week, but despite playing well they are suddenly out of contention and are going in as under-dogs on one betting site against RICHMOND!

Richmond are playing alright at the moment, but really - come on!

As far as I'm concerned Geelong will still win the premiership, they are building, they will face off against Hawks or Collingwood.

richmond are great odds make no mistake.

compare previous years results when rich were playing much worse and syd had their 2 most important players...rich will win, and will win comfortably

Goodes and Mumford out, Reid down on form, and we have had the wood over them in recent MCG matches.

Think before you post.

Post of the century.

Does it sell more papers to have a new flag favourite every week?

This means you are expecting either Collingwood, Hawthorn or Geelong to beat you guys over there. Have you seen your free kick count this year? Its at record levels.

no dont be ridiculos. they have been pretenders for the last 3 years. They fool us into thinking there the real deal early and then fly fly away they goo

But with that all said, essendon are a proud club with a pile of premierships under their belt.

If they make the prelim, i believe that culture and history of success surely creates some self belief in the playing group which could get them to the grand final and even win it.

I know. It's a completely "ridiculos" thought.

As I said in a earlier post we won't win the flag this year but your club won't be in the top echelon of on-field clubs forever either, neither will the likes of the Cats, Hawks etc. Every season there is change and sides come up and surprise people - your own club finished 15th in 2005 and were widely tipped to again finish bottom four in 2006. They finished 5th on the ascent up to a flag 4 years later.

The only thing the Dons have done wrong (so far) in the home & away season is not completely flooding the backline in the final two minutes of the Anzac Day game when they held a 5 point lead. Quite possibly looking at a 6-0 record if this was the case... however we would of taken 5-1 everyday of the week during the pre-season.

This is just another thread for the OP to fall back on if West Coast lose this weekend, goes with the eagles injury thread.

Tragically soft.

Ess will very likely fall into the top 4 courtesy of their soft draw. They will then be promptly despatched in straight sets by any combination of Carl / Coll/ haw/ geel/ wce. Despite all the crap being written in the media about the teams of the moment like ess syd and now even Adelaide, these are still the best 5 teams in the comp and one of them will be premier in 2012

Collingwood twice, Carlton twice, two trips to Football Park within a month, Geelong and Hawthorn in succession, and the supposedly rampaging North again later in the year...

Keep talking shit.

Not to mention zero double games against GC GWS Melb etc. The fact is we will most likely finish 6-8 and we are currently winning the easier games early like we need to in order to make the finals considering the tough run home. The media are just low on IQ and topics.

Yeh anythings possible in May.

Ah well, last year we were accused of being March champions..... seems to be going in the right direction to me! :D

Can't see them doing it this year with only 2-3 A grade players who would perform to their best in a Grand Final (Watson, Fletcher and Hurley/Stanton maybe). Then there are a couple of B+ players, the rest are B-C. It's not enough quality to win a GF.
Maybe in 2 years when some of their young guns - Heppell, Melksham, Pears (although he is going backwards), Hurley, Carlisle - become consistant, elite contributors.
Small forwards are generally made to look silly in Grand Finals and they could not rest their goal kicking on Jetta and Davey (so too Carlton on Betts and Garlett). Further, we saw what happens when a good defender marks Crameri in the Collingwood game. He will be a gun and should improve, but not before the Grand Final.
Kudos to them though for getting some good wins and a galant loss to the Pies, 6 weeks into the season.

Our draw soft? You're kidding right? Have you looked at our draw? We have a softer start to the year but our run home is anything but easy. Oh, and we've already played Carlton and Collingwood this year. How many others have done that?

As for the 'top 5 teams' in the competition. You don't say. I'm too old to put up a captain obvious pic, but you Sir deserve one.

Essendon are not going to win it this year. They're building a team and building bodies.

But to read tripe like this is entirely unnecessary.
