Will Hayward
Spritely Sydney Swans forward Will Hayward enjoyed a rocketing start to his career as he became the 11th-youngest player in the AFL era to reach 50 career goals in 2018. The 2016 draftee’s nippy pace and cunning goal awareness have made him a dangerous option in coach John Longmire’s forward line. A broken jaw and a persistent hip injury limited Hayward to just 12 goals in 13 senior games in 2019, but the South Australian is attacking the 2020 campaign on the back of his first full pre-season. Don’t be surprised if the exciting Swan finds himself on a wing this year.

Will Hayward
DOB: 26 October 1998
DEBUT: 2017
DRAFT: #21, 2016 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Walkerville (SA)/North Adelaide (SANFL)

I'm pretty flat about this.
Lot of love and support from his (former) teammates. I only scrolled so far but includes
Buddy
Tom Hickey
Haydos
Paps
Chad
Heens
Tom and Paddy Mccartin
Bice
Riak

and i’ve probably missed some.

And they're all saying what an absolute ripper bloke he is. (Even Phil Hillyard.) Much loved. 💗💗

It is the end of an era. I think Paps will miss him the most. Once again, so glad he and Ollie get to move together.

No question, they're both ripper lads, and have particularly loved the special relationship they've had together. Will in particular has often played injured and undertaken selfless team-first roles.

As excited as I am for big Charlie, I'm definitely grieving losing those two (as are my daughters - as you can imagine, they were darlings of the younger crowd).

Well, thanks for your service I guess. But I'll never understand the hype around this guy. Distinctly remember him losing a bunch of games singlehandedly with his wayward kicking. Not as bad as amartey mind you, but he's supposed to be this big elite kick. Also goes missing quite a bit albeit a few tackles and junktime goals to make his average look okay.

People often say it's because he's playing in a tough position, but yeah sorry, I'm not buying it. I just think he's not that good.

Dream come true scenario for me. Got rid of Hayward and brought in a good power forward.

Good luck at Carlton Will. It's been a doozy.
You should check the stats, he's a far more accurate kick than Cornow.

Sucks that we lost Hayward. Not exactly sure how Cox felt about him, but seemed like he was hellbent on getting Curnow across and sadly for Will, he was the centrepiece of the deal.

I also felt sorry for Florent, you'd feel pretty ordinary losing the support of your coach after being favoured by the previous coach. And then being told to pack your bags and find another club. That would be pretty crushing, so can't help but feel for him.

I think theyre both perfect for the blues and will have personal success there. Wouldn't surprise me if Hayward kicks 45+ goals for the year.

A little dig at Coxy on the way out it seems

I don't blame him. He clearly didn't want to go but also probably didn't want to stay if he didn't feel like the club 100% wanted him there either. He hasn't sulked about it or said anything over the top. Just a subtle message to Cox and co.

Having said that, I don't necessarily begrudge Cox for doing what he believed was right in order to improve the team either. I'd prefer a coach that has his own vision and direction for the team, rather than someone who's just happy to continue with the status quo.

I think Cox valued Will as a player, He's at Carlton because was one of the only players who wouldn't be reluctant to go (based on his interest in them last year) and who was also deemed expendable, despite being rusted on in the best 23.

I don't like that. I don't like that at all.
Disappointing if that's how it went down.

At the end of the day though even Longmire, (who 99% of our players seemed to love) had fractured relationships with a couple of players who left.

I actually like it.

Sometimes being "friends" with your players is counterproductive.

But there is also a fine line when it comes to managing your players in the current age. As a coach you have to communicate with your players in a way that works, not in a way that suits your own preference. Part of coaching is to not disillusion your players - and that involves identifying each players individual needs/psychology and varying the way you communicate with each of them to keep them switched on.

i.e, we needed Florent at certain points last year - but you can clearly tell he was switched off mentally, which affects the team. If the communication aspect caused part of that, then that's a coaching failure.

to be honest i would switch off too if i had watched roberts play week in week out making errors every game that were horrendous while at the same time being made a scapegoat for performances which were poor but were acceptable given the diabolical situation in the forward line.

And having players as important as amartey and mcinerney get themselves suspended while we had injuries as long as your arm.

Anyway Im still pissed that the decision was made to go all in on curnow and the price was everything and hayward. I just hope the club knows what it is doing because if it gets this wrong (as numerous people apparently think on hayward and florent and its the same people making the decisions other than longmire) we have squandered a lot of opportunities to pick earlier than what we will have

Best of luck will. its a loss.
