Will McManus regret not retiring?

Last 3-4 seasons I have been convinced that McManus would struggle to get a game...He has proven me wrong everytime.

I don't think he will have a regular spot this season, but I wouldn't bet on it. The guy is all heart.

Yep at the start of the last couple of seasons, we keep writing him off and what does he keep doing .................... bouncing right back into the action.

Just having him on the training track will be a bonus to the youngsters, as he won't let them get an easy ball.

If only some other players had Macca's heart ........................... sigh.

I think that had more to do with the lack of depth/quality in the midfield and also the selection policy than Macca's quality, but yeah you've got to give it to the guy for his dedication and heart etc.

Sorry mate but try reading your post before you post it. What are you inferring?

Yeah, if I was posting on the WC board, I'd expect to be threatened with legal action, but I only mean under the influence of alcohol. He'd had a few drinks, but he wasn't disorderly in the slightest.

Yeah fair call plus he's become a bit of an away game specialist (The Road Warrior).

Shaun did not retire for one and only one reason. He was holding out to be my 2008 Buddy. I do not want any more of this Shauneeeee retiring talk or you will have to deal with me, after all that's what Buddies are for.

Nice work Geoff. I'm watchin ya back.

PS. Gadget should have announced his retirement in '07 prior to the Carlton game.

I would be very surprised, no more than surprised, if he was under the "influence". there is a difference between under the influence and having a couple.

But back to the thread, I have conflicting feelings about this, I would prefer macca to play before M. Carr, however I would have hoped neither of them get many games this year if it means that we have a bunch of younsters pressing and earning a game.

However I would also like to see macca playing a huge part in our finals campaign this year. (as i think it is the first time i ahve felt confident about us making the finals)

Now I was firmly in the "Macca should retire" camp... and I probably still think he should've. But the stats in the last year's Year Book suggest that he did everything right in 2007, and deserved to be offered a new contract for 2008.

Check these out:

Goal assisits:
1. Pav - 25
2. Solly - 20
2. Macca - 20
4. Tarrant - 19
5. Des - 18

Total disposals:
1. Belly - 484
2. Hase - 451
3. Josh - 419
4. Macca - 394
5. Pav - 381

Contested Possessions:
1. Hase - 145
2. Josh - 138
3. Pav - 133
4. Macca - 132
5. Belly - 131

Hard Ball Gets:
1. Hase - 75
2. Macca - 59
3. Sandi - 55
4. Josh - 51
5. Solly - 46

Tackles:
1. Solly - 108
2. Josh - 79
3. Macca - 72
4. Hase - 64
5. Belly - 63

Clearances:
1. Hase - 79
2. Josh - 70
3. Belly - 67
4. Sandi - 53
4. Macca - 53

Inside 50s:
1. Pav - 88
2. Macca - 83
2. Des - 83
4. Belly - 73
5. Taz - 70

They are not the stats of a passenger, but a solid contributor who had a very consistent season. My hope for 2008 is that Macca is part of a group of players who are all working hard week in and week out, and all pushing each other to play their best. If he can teach the young kids the value of working to your absolute best, and provide the leadership and the example of someone who bleeds for the club and makes the most of every opportunity when it comes along, and someone who has overcome serious setbacks... and he gets a few games along the way - then I believe that is where his contribution will lie. If he is overtaken by the young fellas and they are getting a regular spot ahead of him, while I reckon that a fierce competitor like him may have a bit of a dent in his pride - I reckon he'll be satisfied that he's handing things over to the "next generation". Same goes for Belly for that matter.

Those figures from Sandi highlight a) his importance in the middle, remembering he was on one leg for a lot of the season, and b) the ignorance of those celebrated Sandi-bashers around the boards.

This is the one I'm most impressed with.

To be equal 2nd in goal assists shows he's more productive when he gets the ball than I gave him credit for.
