It depends.

Jarryd Morton is the man to watch for the pick. I really liked the kid - I had him ranked at #17 overall.

However, if Spida helps Sydney to a Premiership, it doesn't matter if Morton goes on to win a Brownlow - It will have been worth it for Sydney.

They basically payed nothing for nothing so I can't see how they can be disappointed.
They recruited Spida to help win them a flag in the next 2 years. Yet they have just played in the last 2 and managed to win one without him. If they do not win/play in a GF in the next 2 years it will be a waste.

Jolly had over 600 hitouts in 06 and while he had a poor GF he was not the only Swan to do so. Hall had a shocker should they have traded for another Key forward as well.

One game. And get traded? ahaha..

The whole Tigers team should get traded.. they have shockers all year round.

Perhaps paying attention might help. On the first page someone defended the recruiting of Spida by saying they only just lost the GF after getting beaten in the ruck. I merely suggested that they should trade for another key forward after Hall had a bad game. Meaning there was no real need for the Swans to do it i.e. Trade for Everitt.

I get your drift. But when we lost the GF mainly due to our rucking, it's pretty silly to trade just for that. God Forbid, if the Swans won't make the GF then it would've been a stupid trade. IMO, recruiting Everiit will also help the ruck and the forward. Also, Jolly isn't a very good ruckman, with a more experieced ruckman it can enchance our chances.

I'm starting to think that Swans supporters may be the dumbest in the league. I've seen bags of cement with higher IQ's than some of these Swan supporters.

We figured out Richmond supporters were dumb and feral a long long time ago.

Even before they spat on their coach:thumbsu:

You might want to discuss how good/bad Jolly is with Swans Premiers. He rates him quite highly. Jolly may not be the greatest but he is only 25 and will improve in time. Everitt had his best years at 30-31. Jolly has time on his side. This year without Ball he stepped up and took over the Number 1 spot. I think it would be better to stick with him and give him the chance to get the job done.

Right.

The Swans get smashed in the ruck in the biggest game of last season, a position they don't have much quality backup in, and you think they should do nothing.

Yeah, Hall got pantsed in last years Grand Final, but if Spida was playing for Sydney it wouldn't have made any difference. He would have done a hell of a lot better against Cox than Jolly did.

This way Sydney get to rotate ruckmen and have quality cover if one goes down during the season. And they got him for nothing more than a second round pick. For a team with a Premiership window of likely the next two years or so, that is nothing.

Anyone who thinks the Swans will regret losing a second round draft pick to strengthen the one position on the ground they're weak in is delusional.

They got smashed in the ruck in the QF as well yet still managed to win that game. They also got smashed in the Round 15 game against the Eagles yet only lost by 2 points. Seems like Jolly was doing ok not great but the rest of the team was good enough to get the job done. At 33 years of age it would seem that Spida would be the one to go down if that happens for an extended period the Swans are back to square one. Perhaps not as delusional as you think.

If the Swans do not win the flag in the next 2 years, Will it still have been worth it?

Swans are already the #1 team at clearances so with one of the best tap ruckman in the league Hall, O'loughlin, Davis and O'keefe are going to be getting A LOT of supply in 2007;)

Can't wait :D

If the Swans do not win the flag in the next 2 years, Will it still have been worth it?

That's assuming that if they don't win a flag, it's because of Spida's form.

Next two years, swans don't win a flag. But spida plays like a man possessed. The deal works out because spida plays well, yet because they don't win a flag the spida deal is a failure?

No, we don't know yet why or how the swans wont win a flag in the next two years. All spida can do is play well. If he keeps up his side of the bargain, then the deal was worth it. Remember football is a team game and each player needs to perform. Spida could play well but then Hall could have another shocker. How is that spidas fault? How can you then say that the trade was a mistake?

So let me get this straight...
If a club recruits a player and they don't win a premiership before that player retires, the trade was a failure?

So does this mean every trade Richmond has for the last quarter of a century has been a failure?

So you agree that they require backup in the ruck position. Thats good.

Seems like Jolly was doing ok not great but the rest of the team was good enough to get the job done.
Correct. In one of those games the rest of the team were good enough to cover for their deficiencies in the ruck.

So it makes sense that Sydney address that problem then, doesn't it? You know, take the load off the rest of the team by improving in a position they're lacking?

At 33 years of age it would seem that Spida would be the one to go down if that happens for an extended period the Swans are back to square one. Perhaps not as delusional as you think.
Well, there you have it. By your rekoning they shouldn't have tried to address the major shortfall of the team.

After all, they did lose several games last season through copping a hiding in the ruck. But they shouldn't try to address the problem by getting one of the best tap ruckmen in the league. After all, Spida may get injured.

Do you want to be the one to tell Paul Roos that he messed up?

If the Swans do not win the flag in the next 2 years, Will it still have been worth it?
The simple fact is that Sydney have probably two more chances to win it all with their current team before others rise and surpass them. If Spida was in red and white last season they would have been looking at Back to Back flags.

It's a no brainer. It's the trade off any team as close to being Premiers as Sydney are would take.

You have to forgive 9th Placed Finish...his club has been rebuilding for 25 years now so recruiting anyone over the age of 23 is just crazy for him. He seems to think that draft picks= Future premiership success.:p

Can't remember the last premiership team that did it without trading for any players though...

I never said they did not need another ruckman my question was will they regret getting Spida. Yes they lost a few games after getting belted in the ruck but the point I was trying to get across was they went within 2 points of being back to back premiers (1 point would mean a drawn GF) without him. Will Spida get them that extra flag they crave? Time will tell. Can you name the last side to win a flag with a 33 year old as their first or second ruckman? There may have been one recently but I can't recall them.

Perhaps a little history lesson might help Junior. In 2001 the Tigers played in the PF and Frawley the Genius:mad: thought he was a couple of HFF and another tall from a flag. He traded for Paul Hudson and Stafford and drafted Adam Houlihan who had been delisted from the Cats. result was the following year the Tigers missed the finals altogether with 7 wins for the year. Now I am not saying that the Swans will only have 7 wins for the year but the results that you are hoping for may not come just because you have Spida.

Why would you regret getting an exceptionally good player that covers a position your club is deficient in?

I still don't understand it.

You don't think they should address a weakness because they almost won a flag last time around? Is that what you're trying to say?

Can you name the last side to win a flag with a 33 year old as their first or second ruckman?
Jason Ball, 21/11/1972. Played with Sydney in 2005.

Actually, he was 32 but he turned 33 that year.

If he does not help deliver what the team is after I know I would regret it.

Again never said they should not address it.

33 after the GF but a good point. I thought he was only 30ish. Apologies.

There's a huge difference between making a Prem Final and winning a premiership and losing a grand final by a point, wouldn't you say? I would think that a player with the calibre of Everitt would surpass any of the players you named (Hudson aside).

Topping up teams lists with experienced players is not something new, nor something that only the swans practice. Of course it can backfire, but so can the draft. Stats say it's more likely that a player won't make it, then will. Wouldn't you think it's an acceptable risk to take a punt on a player like Everitt?

Plenty of teams given the chance, would kill for the opportunity that teams like the eagles and swans find themselves in at present - as the stand out contenders for next years premiership.

Time will tell. I asked the question and the next 18 months will provide the answers.
