I think Geelong needs a coach that will commit to 3 years as of now.
Thompson's plan to see out one more year doesn't really do you any favours.
If you lose Ablett, then right now is the perfect opportunity to trade and draft aggressively.
I don't see the Cats slipping outside the top 6, you still have a core of talented players to refresh the team around and should be flying high again very soon... perfect opportunity for a new coach to re-load your guns!

I wonder if Leigh Tudor will be an option.

I was suprised to hear the Bomber is considering leaving Geelong, but i'm not worried about it, he is a great coach, but he has done all he can at the Cats and even if he does commit to next season, will he just go along with it and not bother ? yes, most likely. 11 Years coaching one club is a long time, i believe he actually is mentally fatigued, but at the same time, i think he wants to go to Essendon. Whatever the outcome, we will be better off if Bomber leaves.

The answer is "No".

Just like it was at the end of 2006 when there was more than a mere whisper calling for him to go. The man has a fantastic proven record already yet he is only 46 years old - a bit of down time & he'll be right.

No this situation is nothing like at the end of 2006.

He has had success since then, his journey was far from over then. He still had to deliver on his promises.

If he stays, it would only be for the one season anyway.

If Gaz leaves the new coach will give us the perfect oppertunity to start moving foward from the 07 era into the next. We could very well be strong contenders next year but the chances of us being a real powerhouse are slim, we'd probably find ourselves in the bracket of the dogs over the last 5 or so years or Collingwood up until this point. A very good side that just isn't up there with the top couple.

We could fight on in that regard until our list ages completely and bottom out then, or we could inject some youth and new line of leadership and thinking into the club and hopefully rather then a long fade out and equally long rebuild we can just bounce back.

To cut a long story short I think we will be worse short term but much better long term.

Totally agree, you never like to see the unravling of an era, but as you say the core is still good, afterall if it wasn't for that umpire with the hair trigger whistle, you might have missed your opportunity.

But you're right if he's saying these things now, why waste another year, give him his wish, let him go to Essendon, or wherever.
Regerate enthusiasm into the club for 2011, we need positive people ATM.

2011 is a nothing year if he stays.

Perfect timing if he really only has 1 more year anyway, let alone if he is burned out. He has already said emphatically he doesn't want to be a career coach, and we may be doing him a favour to release him.

Very unlikely a flag year next year, despite it being an odd year, so good time to search for the new coach, President, and structure of playing. Why have a year of waiting for the inevitable changes in 2012??
