Ryan Nye
Ryan Nye (Peel Thunder)
182/80 top-age right foot defender / utility.
*STYLE LIKE: early Scott Burns
*HURT FACTOR (Offensive/Defensive/Negative):
- High / medium / low.
*TRADEMARK:
- Aggressive, balanced run to the ball, attack it, then balanced long kick.
*SUMMARY ASSESSMENT, RECOMMENDATION:
- It's hard to assess Ryan with conviction as I have only seen him in one and a half games and usually playing deep in defence.
- Top-age, strongly-built, almost 6', genuine footballer who is accountable, get his own ball, and attacks it in the first place.
- I really like a lot of what I have seen and would have him much earlier if I was convinced he had good pace. I can't dogmatically say he hasn't. Perhaps he has and my sample is too small. My impression though is that he lacks a metre and, at barely 6, I assessed him lower than I would have otherwise liked, on that basis. Had I seen him play for a decent amount of time in, and perform well in, roles that have more offensive impact (eg inside midfielder) I would have more faith in ranking him earlier, perhaps a lot earlier.
It didn't help me that he missed the rest of the season after the U18 Champs or that he hadn't had the chance to show much prior to the Champs.
In the end, in the absence of enough observations, I ranked him conservatively at 35 on my list. Time may show that I have done him an injustice. He looks a genuine footballer and my ranking doesn't reflect my respect for the little I have seen.
However, when I have so little game observation to go on and the player not only seems to lack a metre but is already top-age, vanilla height, physically developed, was unavailable for DC athletic testing, and hasn't had the chance to display what he can do in roles of greater offensive impact (eg midfield), then It's hard to rationalise why he must be ranked earlier.
As a defender, plays close most of the time but also likes to back his judgement and attack the ball pro-actively. He doesn't just protect his own nest. He will go out to pressure another opponent if he deems that the risk to his team at that time is likely to be greater from that opponent than from his own.
He beat the dangerous Herrington, playing him the way I've always advocated he has to be played - proactively. Herrington got away a couple of times on a lead. Nye's judgement and attack on the ball was impressive. Herrington seemed quicker.
*DISPOSAL:
- Very good depth, power in kicks. Nice kicking style - fluent, powerful, quite economical.
- Generally accurate kick. Can deliver a pin-point powerful pass on the run and hit a target on the chest 55m away from a set kick.
- Tried a couple of "too cute", "nothing" little deliveries in the Champs.
- Rarely feeds. If that pattern is his norm, I would want him to redress the imbalance. From the little I've seen, he does seem to have an element of predictability - get and kick. He needs to bring nearby team mates into the play a bit more often with feeds.
*DECISION-MAKING, SMARTS:
- Judgement, decision-making and vision seem to be usually good. Seems to choose the right times to back himself. Maybe tries to be a bit too cute with disposal on isolated occasions.
- Doesn't lack poise. Some players are inclined to panic, to lack poise. At the other end of the scale, Nye, if anything, perhaps doesn't afford pressure situations quite enough respect.
- Following that same line, awareness may be a query.
*HANDS:
- Seems fairly clean at ground level although not convincingly so, on the little I've seen.
*OVERHEAD MARKING:
- Hard to assess his reliability on such a small sample but I suspect he is pretty reliable overhead. Showed poor hand and judgement on one occasion in the U18 Champs but good on a few other occasions, including 2 nice contested marks and almost took a screamer.
*ATHLETICISM:
- Looks to lack a metre. My gut feel is that he may be a 3.10 guy over 20m. If so, that is too slow for his type. He may well be quicker. Its hard to be sure, on such a brief period of observation and playing mainly a virtual BP negating role at the Champs.
- Good reflexes and recovery agility.
- Good leap.
*INTENSITY, ETHIC:
- Courageous.
- Attacks both man and ball.
- Seems to be an effectively tackler.
- Good 2nd efforts.
*CONSISTENCY:
*AFL VERSATILITY:
- (too little known). Just a gut feel but, subject to the pace query, he appears to have a handy skill-set and build for inside mid-fielder in time. That doesn't mean he has the other attributes needed though. I'm in the dark.
*SCI (SCOPE FOR CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT):
- I officially denoted his SCI as "normal". He hasn't had the development and the match experience this year that his peers have had but, other than that catch-up aspect, SCI is limited. Already top-age and physically developed.
*QUERY:
- Pace
