Working from home, good/bad?

My team starts tomorrow.

In my experience, although bigger organisations tend to have the best WFH setups on paper they have been the slowest to implement it across the board because of scale issues.

Our team is the first of thousands of employees who will soon be drawing on our server capacity to run remote desktops, and I don’t think our IT department’s BCP ever envisaged that sort of load.
We were already setup for most employees globally to be mobile or remote and most already were so no big change for a lot of us.

We are similar, but it wasn’t SOP for 100% of support staff, 100% of the time.

As a result the process is nominally smooth - we all have Remote Desktop access and experience using it - but load is going to scale massively.

When this is all over there will be a lot of office vacancies as companies realise they dont need 30 floors in a cbd highrise.

Also less demand for apartments in the city and surrounds as people realise they can just get a more modest place out in the suburbs to work from home in

If they let the school kids out then ISPs will need to block netflix, youtube etc during business hours or our crappy internet infrastructure will buckle.
NBN needs to stop artificially throttling ISPs

I’d be very interested to see the statistics that come out of the number of workers comp claims over this period. Covid-19 exposure aside, with the home becoming the designated workplace, personal interactions will be significantly reduced but I wonder if there will be an increase of injuries in the home leading to claims

If so it will be a bit of a nightmare. I know my work sent me home without the required environment prechecks, simply because they didn’t have time or capacity to check every employee’s home office.

I spent the first 11 years of my working life doing a time sheet for every minute & was expected to recover 1500 hours pa, i.e bill it to a client & the bill paid.
It isnt a requirement of most admin jobs,& isnt achieved across most admin jobs - doing them from home fulltime is less productive again imho.

I think everyone acknowledges that WFH is less productive, for a bunch of reasons. The real question is whether the lost productivity outweighs the reduced costs.

Not only reduced rent, overheads and hopefully absenteeism, but also stuff like reduced COL for employees leading to savings on salary packages.

my work from home is more productive
staright away i am up 1 hour minimum saved from 30 min transport each way
then, less idle chit chat in cubicles, corridors etc

i do 20% more work a day than i do in office over the last 8 years

Why 20%? Most admins have a 20% no work factor in everything but the wages.

I am loving it

Managing 10 ppl, I constantly get interrupted with unnecessary questions, at home they are generally emailed so I can get to them when I want and not lose focus of what I'm doing, plus there are way less questions as they put more effort into solving it themselves.

Also less fluff meetings

Plus when I am dealing with an angry customer I can get into my bed and pull the covers over my head and feel safe.

and wine from 3pm

what do these involve, generally speaking?
The full gamut of OH&S bullshit. Everything from a workstation check for ergonomics to an environmental risk assessment of things like ventilation, lighting and smoke detectors.

I imagine that they’ll send out the forms for us to do a self-assessment at some point. Mind you, you just know that means some idiot will declare their workstation unsafe and put in a requisition for a $2K standing desk.

You could avoid work by joining the NEW BigFooty Chess Club:

No toilet advice/forms?

WFH for a lot of jobs tends to lead to increased productivity due to less disruptions and reduced travel time

But it also leads to isolation and unhappiness and a lot of people after WFH prefer to go back to the office and deal with the disruptions and travel to have human contact

I enjoyed my first couple of days WFH, but I'm finding it less and less appealing now. I go for a walk in the morning and at lunch, but I am going a little stir-crazy and miss the interactions with my team.

Benefits:
* I'm a massive tightarse and I like saving money on travel/ takeaway coffees/ lunch (too lazy to prep my own)
* Home office = bullshit tax deductions (furniture, decorations, internet, heating, etc)
* No one cares if half the tabs open on my PC are bigfooty or pornhub
* No need to wear pants
* Sleeping in, especially when the better half has a late start. Best way to start the day.
* Suits my natural rhythm- wake up midday, work 'til late
* Smoke weed all day.

Drawbacks:
* It's really hard to get motivated when I spend all day smoking cones, watching filth and hanging out on bigfooty.
* It's also stressful when deadlines approach and I've done fu** all :$

Still, I love it.
Goddamn, before all this COVID s**t I was nailing the WFH life.

Now it's ****ed.

It was fine when it was just me, now I'm sharing the home with the wife and she's home too it's rubbish.

Kitchen's a ******* mess, need to do the dishes before I can make some coffee, means I'm less productive.
And now I'm the tech support dickhead for some other company ("HEY ARE YOU STREAMING AGAIN? INTERNET IS SLOW. DOES THE PRINTER WORK? BLAH BLAH BLAH")

Internet has been rubbish too.
