New Caledonia v A South American team? That’s horrifically unfair. Why not North America- Panama, USA, Mexico, Cuba, El Salvador etc .

Is that what the playoff is . Lol. What a farce. Oceania surely only needs the 1 spot, not 1.5.

Infact, its about time to abolish OFC. Make it a sub association of AFC with the winner of OFC joining the later rounds of AFC qualifying.

The intercontinental playoffs are different this time around. Each federation gets 1 playoff spot (6 in total) with 2 spots available for the WC. Basically it's a phased playoff at a neutral site with the highest ranked sides going through to the final game.

Would actually prefer this idea. Better chance for Oceania.

I'd add Oceania's 1.5 places to Asia's 8.5

Oceania qualifiers start with Round 1 of the absolute shittest teams in Oceania competing against each other keeping it regional. The 2 best of these teams go into R2 against NZ, New Caledonia, Fiji, Solomon Islands. Winner of this (very likely to be NZ perpetually) - goes into final round of AFC qualifying. 5 groups of 4, playing everyone twice. Top 2 from each group (with seeding) qualified for World Cup. Seeds would be Japan S. Korea Iran Australia Saudi

It would take away NZ's guaranteed place but it would also provide meaningful competition for OFC clubs and would give NZ national team the opportunity to play regular games against competitive opposition.

Oceania has had a disgusting path.
Not Asian’s 5th side, not North American’s but South America. It’s horrific. Uruguay in 2005.
It’s a nightmare.

So they should qualify, they deserve it.
NZ now can have more professional and success with development given more qualifications. It’s a win for the growth of the sport

Scotland are just a dumpster in world football. Australia would still beat them.
Oceania didn't get South America in the playoffs every time. Counting back from 2022 it goes:

2022: North America
2018: South America
2014: North America
2010: Asia
2006: South America
2002: South America
1998: Asia
1994: North America then South America
1990: South America
1986: Europe

I think 2018 & 2022 are the wrong way around unless I've lost the plot.

2018 Honduras, 2022 Peru

You’re right, it isn’t too bad at first look.

Would’ve thought Asia 3rd place v Oceania runner up is a better and fairer proposition.

South America almost always guaranteed 5 every 4 years. Pretty unfair.

Avoiding the intercontinental playoff situations that we've faced in the past would be a good idea. Beat China on Tuesday and then Japan in Perth later this year and we're almost definitely in. Pretty much that simple. Don't leave the door open.

No reason to leave the OFC now. They've essentially got a guaranteed spot in the World Cup every four years and that's very valuable. Probably a good thing for us too because it means more A-League players will get World Cup experience and bring that back with them. Plus, it opens the door for us to face them in the World Cup and that would obviously be a huge event for both countries. There's really no negative to it.

Good for them. Monday night will be special for the Kiwis when they qualify at Eden Park.
Surely without NZ, the OFC should just cease to exist. Probably already a case for it to be merged with the AFC by FIFA.
Together we'll end up having 10 full spots for the WC.

Is Goodwin lacking fitness? Seems very strange he isn’t starting again.

Crowd is huge - reminds me of the game where we drew 0-0 over there and Schwarzer saved a penalty late. From memory we had one striker in the squad (Archie) and he got maimed in the opening 10 minutes by one of the worst tackles I have seen, and he wasn’t even booked!
