Now that is a strong "worst team" line up. No room for Chris Duthie, Grant Thomas, Keith Thomas, Kevin Taylor or Brenton Klaebe? I forgot to include Kevin Caton and Gavin Exell

Re: Noel Mugavin (1978 - 1981)

Full back has to be Peter McCormack. Played half a game against Collingwood at Vic Park in the mid 80's and from memory BT kicked about 6 on him.

Could never have Mugavin in the side, I used to have the famous 35 on my jumper. Although I rekon his best ever game was against us at VFL park.

Oh, and where's Jeff Hogg??

Gawd! That's a fair effort of the worst team Grim. I started following the Roys in 78. You haven't missed too many there! Honourable mentions to Grant Thomas, Michael Roberts as their careers were on the downward spiral when they joined Fitzroy. Andrew Cavedon is possibly the worst player I saw in Fitzroy colours. Probably a bit harsh there on Terry O'Neill. Even though he made some awful mistakes in the 81 semi v Collingwood, he played some reasonable games too. I'd replace him with Doug Smith or Jan Smith. Or even Roger Delaney from SA.

Re: Noel Mugavin (1978 - 1981)

I am outraged that space could not be found for Darren Payne, Marty Warry and Nick Mitchell.

Jees you're bringing back some repressed memories now Tom...I'd almost erased Nick "son of Gus, Chairman of Selectors" Mitchell from my memory.

Not my list LL (see link).

I am familiar with about 5 names on the list.

Haha what a blast. That author "Peroossie" was actually me in a previous Big Footy identity Grim. I could not remember my password in 2005, so I created my current profile LL!

Here I am commenting on a thread that I'd forgotten I'd posted many years ago!

Jeff Hogg has captain coach written all over him in this team.
Remember Klaebe came with big wraps and yeh his 5 games werent short of ordinary.
Watched Jamie Bond quite a few times when he played for Maryborough back around 1999- was a dirty bugger, good footballer at theat level just dirty, but so was the Maryborough Football Club in general in those days. Dirty, arrogant but a bloody good football team.

haha:D

Good job you weren't too critical of the list.

Exactly Grim! I don't think that I would have owned up to being it's author if that was the case. :)

How on earth did you find this thread ? It's one from the archives for sure!

I still say that this team is a pretty awesome "worst" team....It would struggle to beat Gold Coast & GWS in 2012.

I was searching for info for this thread.

Ahh the Mug. Quite unorthodox was he. No one knew what he was going to do on the footy field, least of all the Mug himself.

He played for Richmond against us in 82 & broke Graham Hinchen's jaw. He certainly was a mug that day!

Ummm....a number of these players should not be included in this team.

Terry O'Neill - Before my time, but he did feature in the Fitzroy team that contested the 1981 finals series. I remember a turn over late in the 1st semi final loss to Collingwoood, but surely a guy who played in a finals series cant feature in a worst ever team.

Dean Lupson -a reserves premiership player. Surely this has to count for something.

David Donato - Harsh. A knee reconstruction ruined his career. Showed promise prior to this horrific injury. Dont think a player who's career was ended by a serious injury qualifies for this team.

Michael Nettlefold - played in the Fitzroy 1983 team, including finals and was in our best players in the 1983 losing qualifying final against Hawthorn.

As we all know, the 1996 season, was horrific for us all, not least the players. Given this situation, for me, its hard to make a judgement on players that were on our 1996 list, as lots of young players showed promise and a number of these players developed into good players at other clubs.

How about the ex Geelong player (cant remember his name) who kicked 100 goals in a season then crossed to the roys? He has to be at FF. Peter Sartori, Adam McCarthy and David Bain could also be contenders....

I think that you might be referring to Larry Donohue. He crossed to Fitzroy in the early 80's. Played 1 or 2 night games for us IIRC, but did his shoulder in a practice game...career over! His biggest claim to fame as a Fitzroy player was to feature in the 1982 Scanlens footy card set. Another Geelong player & goal kicker to become a Roy was Gavin Exell. He got poked in the eye one game & that was virtually career ending as well for him.

Peter Sartori was a very talented player who could play at FF or in the ruck, but he had a very bad run with injuries. He was going to be our saviour in 92 & he started off the pre-season games with a bang...until he wrecked his knee.
