Worst Number One Draft Pick

I feel Banik is being harshly judged. At the time, he was clearly the best junior available and was more than serviceable in the ~50 games he played. His career was cut short due to injury and illness.

If allowed to continue to a natural conclusion, he probably would have been in the similar vein to Drew Banfield - not a star but a strongly built, reliable, dependable midfielder.

If you really want to rip into Richmond about a #1 draft pick, you can't go past Richard Lounder. Built like an obelisk but with less agility and ability! I believe he was wheeled out for 4 games before packing it in and heading back to WA.

Hutton was a total dud. Even complained after he's first game (Bris vs Tigers) that the game was too fast and hard because his helmet got ripped off.

Hodge has to be up there too. Terrible player.

The John Hutton story:

Played for Scotch College in the Perth PSA before going to Claremont. At Claremont he won the WAFL goalkicking award and was touted as the number #1 draft pick. Before the draft he made a statement that if Brisbane were to draft him he wouldn't go. Brisbane were bottom of the ladder at the time and didn't look like they were going anywhere. So the Bears drafted him and he went to Brisbane. He then stated he only made the initial statement to try to disuade Brisbane from picking him but always intended to go. Similar to what another young draft pick did who wanted to go to Essendon years later (whatever happened to him), and similar to what Clancy Rudeforth did a few years ago.

Hutton basically didn't cut it in the AFL.

Hodge has to be up there too. Terrible player-originally posted by local.

you're a baffoon! Highly skilled, accountable and couragous player who has been hampered by a debilitating injury and weak football team. Every team in the land would jump at him if he threw himself on the market. I chose Waterhouse, because to judge any 1 draft pick after 1999 is doing the player an injustice. This is because they still have at minimum 5 years left in them you would argue, therefore an equipoise appraisal of each player cannot be reached. Waterhouse has however had an average but servicable career, and has in no way disgraced his jumper.

Hutton= Victim of circumstance, if he was up front for say Geelong as opposed to the 92 Bears things would have been different, plus when he went to Sydney he was one of the older guys Barassi dropped. By the time the Dockers started he was 29. Probably would have been better off staying at the 'Monts until Freo started.

Hutton=not an AFL champion but not as bad as people think

South Australia, please! Only we have stobie poles.

Can't believe it took 50 odd posts for Lounder to get a mention .

He would have been a bad pick at number 120.

Hutton was too short to be an AFL full forward and not mobile enough to play elsewhere. Similar to Todd Breman in that he was a star WAFL goalkicker but didn't fit into the AFL with his body size .

Fraser is the most over rated No 1 pick in the list

Don't worry about it Moe. It's pretty obvious 'local' is not the full quid. You have to be patient with these simple types.

Goes to show that #1 picks do tend to be highly successful.

Hutton it would have to be though.

Don;t argue, don;t argue, Hutton's footy rules are best!

As for Clive - you idiots the guy is a legend sadly hit hard by injuries.

If Clive entered the draft this year, he'd go at No. 1 again.

An exerpt from a classic novel:

Call me Clive.

Also starred as the Minotaur in The Labyrinth

Richard Lounder.............Strike 1

Anthony Banik...............Strike 2

Brett Deledio.................???????

Btw................Lounder was one of the worst players ever to grace a football field............he was big, 50 stone overweight, slow as treacle & dumb as a box of rocks..................fitted in well at tigerland really. :D

Deep down you all fear Clive, capable of turning a game on his head on his day. Would've been interested to see how he went if not injured.

Clive-Wills-Chisholm. The holy trinity.
lol. Go Chisholm! Love that guy
