Merv Hughes and Shane Warne had shockers.

didn't the great Don Bradman have a shocker for a debut as well? its been a while since I looked that up.

S.Waugh had a crap first 3 years as well.

Merv Hughes 200 odd wickets at 28 ish, warne one of the great leg spinners, the don, the best ever and s.waugh one of the great captains and a test average of 50

Matthews got 3/95. There's been heaps worse than him.

the name trimble is coming to me, a legspinner from WA I think.

Told of selection for the next test before a shield game, and proceeded to bowl 20+ wides the next day. Think someone wrote a story about it. (Max Walker's books?)

Trimble, trundler from Qld.
Was a one dayer at the WACA, iirc, truckload of wides.
Pretty sure we'e thinking of the same bloke

Actually I think it was the 2nd test for Mathews were it all went wrong.
maybe it was his second test, all i remember was this guy bowling balls that were not hitting the pitch, bowled some very long overs.

Roy Park comes to mind.

Good Victorian batsmen, gets picked for Australia in Melbourne against England back in the early 20's. Gets a huge roar coming onto the ground, faces up and is bowled first ball. Australia win by an innings and he never plays again.

There's a legend that his wife dropped her knitting just as he was facing up and missed his entire test career.

John Watkins played the final test of 72/73 against Pakistan. Bowled 6 overs for 21 from memory, with a fair smattering of wides.

He'd already been picked for the 73 tour of the West Indies prior to the test, so duly toured there. He didn't play first-class cricket again after that.

The irony is that in the Pakistan test, he still played an important part. Australia was 8/101 in the second innings and he and Bob Massie put on 83 for the ninth wicket to give Australia a lead of around 150. (Watkins batted for a long time, three odd hours I think). That turned out to be good enough for Australia to defend, with Walker taking 6/15.

The Trimble you are thinking of incidentally was Glenn Trimble from Queensland. I think from memory his ODI bowling was a bit wonky at times (can't be sure though).

Graham Gooch got a pair from memory

a couple of years ago I did the tour of Lords, there is a portrait of Gooch in the members , the tour guide asked for suggestions why, I suggested becuase he fot a pair in his first Test v Australia, the guide was not amused the other visitors were :D

Yes! I certainly remember Trindle.
He was the son of a former Australian player and Channel 9 had big wraps on him as they do, pumping up his tyres, and the poor kid looked like a backyard cricketer and could hardly keep it on the pitch. :o
From memory didn't he hit Jeremy Coney in the upper part of his chest with a beamer then let rip a head-high full toss not long later. All accidental obviously.

If Doherty plays in Brisbane, we're about to see it.

Wow! A negative comment from Adelaide Hawk

Now I've seen it all...

Time to get that noose out...you will be missed

Kulkarni had a great debut! He actually took a wicket with his first ball in Test Cricket (not many in THAT club). He should have pulled a hammy then. Wound up with a test record of 2/332 from 2 tests.

John Watkins is an interesting one. Classic 'Boy from the Bush' story. All the Australian players said he was unplayable in the nets. He was basically picked on his district form (he had only played 5 ordinary FC matches up to then). But nerves got to him, and he bowled dreadfully. He then went with the Aussies to the Windies, didn't play a test and didn't play FC cricket again. But he did make 36 in the second innings of his only test and shared an 83-run 9th-wicket partnership with Bob Massie - and Australia won from an impossible position by 52 runs( hmmmm, sound familiar - yes it was against Pakistan). So his debut wasn't completely disastrous.

Chris Matthews was the best bowler in Shield cricket for about 3-4 years running, but he couldn't get it right in tests (he had a couple of goes).

Victor Trumper made 0,11 on debut.

Gary Cosier dropped a catch the first time he touched the ball in test cricket (but he made a hundred so his debut got better).

Yet, Ian Chappell wasn't overly impressed with Gary Cosier. So much so, that when World Series Cricket started up in 1977, Ian Chappell was the sole selector of the WSC Australian team and he had the final say of who would be playing (or signed up) for WSC. Of the 17 players that toured England that year, 13 of them signed up for WSC and only four did not. The four non-WSC signings were Craig Serjeant, Kim Hughes, Gary Dymock and Cosier.
