Was listening to Carrazzo from the Blues on the radio this afternoon and Mark Doran raised something that got my attention. He was talking about how Carrazzo has turned from being a run with player into a guy who is now getting tagged. What Doran suggested was that because Carrazzo had been a tagger he knew what those players he was tagging did to break tags and get free and when he gets tagged himself would have a better idea of how to go about breaking those tags. We all know that Lids struggles with tags and goes missing when he is put under the pressure of a close checking opponent.
So I thought I would pose a question: Would Lids benefit if he was used as a run with player?
The Benefits:
Get him playing in the guts where we all want him played anyway but get him following around the better players in the game and see how hard they work to get free and in a position to help their side. While there he can still be a damaging player working the other way off his opponent who in all likelihood is not going to put too much defensive pressure on him.
The Downside: Don't really believe there would be a downside to him playing this role. If the opposition still wants to play an opponent on him then it frees another of our players up. As mentioned if he does play this role then he gets first hand experience in how the games better players work to break their tags in the long run that is not a downside if Lids learns how to deal with tags.
