If you saw a man hitting a woman, especially one who had a 4 year old child in her arms?

I went to the shops this afternoon & while waiting for the bus, I heard a guy swearing & calling this girl all sorts of names, then he went up & backhanded her. The little boy was crying, so I went up to the guy & told him to leave her alone & that if he laid another hand on her I would call the police.

He then started abusing me & telling me to mind my own ******* business, I replied that when a man is hitting a woman in public it's everyone's business.

He just kept yelling & swearing & getting in the young womans face, but fortunately didn't hit her again, so I stayed next to her, as she rang her father to pick her up & I said I would stay until he arrived. This guy was obviously drunk or high, he was totally off his face, anyway her father turned up about 15 minutes later & after speaking to his daughter, he thanked me for stepping in, I told him it was nothing, that I won't stand by while a man hits a woman.

I just hope that she doesn't go back to that idiot, as she would be putting herself & son in danger from this nutter.

What really amazed me was, there were a lot of adult males waiting at the bus station & not one of them tried to intervene to protect this young woman, what is this world coming to?

So the lesson here kids, is keep your murderous domestic violent behaviour where it belongs - at home.

Hard to say if I would intervene, hard for anybody untill they are presented with that situation.

Maybe she was just a glutton for punishment.

A sign of the times. People dont like to get involved. Sad imo.

Glad you showed empathy and stayed beside her till help arrived. This could have been anyone sister or daughter. Its not on.

That poor child.

Its a hard situation. You just dont know what to expect. If I step in, will I end up getting stabbed or something drastic like that? You dont know. I would have called the police and let them know....but for a male to run in there all guns blazing the way mantis did would more than likely end in a fist fight straight away.

Maybe its the work I do.
Its an instinct, you just do it. Not question how its going to affect you.

Exactly, I jusr saw that poor boy crying in fear, if it had have been a man & a woman having an argument, maybe I woukldn't have, but when a child is involved I didn't think about the possible risks.

Chilfren shoukd never be put in that situation.

Interesting question you pose and not one that can be answered until you are in a real life situation IMHO.

While we'd all like to think we would play the 'good guy' if we witnessed something like this, a lot of people don't do it for fear of reprisal. If this bloke was hitting a girl with a child in her arms, do you really think he'd care what he could potentially do to someone in his way?

A case that sticks quite vividly in my mind is the schoolboy that was killed - speared in the head with an umbrella tip - after he stood up for a girl at a tram stop several years ago. I cannot remember if it was his girlfriend or if he even knew the group of girls, but he stood up for them when a group of guys called her a 'sl*t'. Next thing he knows, an umbrella is lodged in his head and he dies.

While we all like to be the noble hero in theory, I believe a lot of people turn a blind eye for this exact reason.

I'd say this is probably the reason. Most people probably wouldn't get involved in a stanger's conflict for fear of physical violence being directed against them. I'm suprised the idiot in the unpredictable state didn't take a swing at the OP. Certainly brave and very commendable of you to step in in that situation :thumbsu:

I don't think of it as brave or commendable, I just saw a young woman & child at risk, to me you have to help.

I agree with other posters, that maybe if a man stepped in the idiot might have gone on the attack, but the guys who were there were a lot bigger & stronger.

I guess a lot of people are remembering that taxi attack & death in melbourne, when a guy tried to help a woman & ended up dying. But could you live with yourselves, if the girl you were too scared to protect ended up being killed?

A while back I came accross a similar situation while visiting melbourne. Taxi rank near bridge road - in fact the story's probably on here somewhere.

Couple having a fight, she tries to get in a taxi, he pulls her back, violence ensues.

I'm walking up with bags of shopping but drop them, and grab him, pulling him back. He stumbles, and trips backwards over the seat, she jumps in the taxi and screams off.

He yells obscenities at me, and begins to follow me (I'm not high-tailing it, but walking pretty briskly) but stops before I get to the tram and hop-on.

About a week later some guy was killed for doing a similar thing.

I can bet that if it were a woman being violent at the man no one would take action.

Bingo. Or even a man beating up another man. Why did the OP say that she would not stand by while a man hits a woman...why not say when a person hits another person? Double standards i tells ya.

Just think about it, two men having a go & a woman steps in.

I stepped in because it was a young woman, but mainly because a young child was involved.

What is wrong with young men these days, that they can't see the difference.

So what is the difference between a man indirectly putting a child in danger and a woman deliberately pushing a kid off his bike?

You're both pigs.

If anything id be thankful that its not me in the bodybag, rather than feeling guilty over someone that I didnt even know their name. Selfish I know but Id say 99% of people would feel the same.

But, this is why at the very least I would call the police. Stepping in would be dependant on various factors like how big the guy is and who else was around. If there were a couple of other guys around id probably try and get a posse going to help out....but a single guy, approaching a psycho guy whos happy to belt a chick holding (assuming) his kid is asking to be put in a coma.

Whilst my attitude may be sad and selfish, unfortunately thats how it is these days.

So so sad that it is. So so sad for your sister or another woman or child in your life, as they will have no one to help them in their time of need.

You mean a guy who was going to run me down if I didn't get out of his way, when he was breaking the law? He could have gone around me on the nature strip, but nope, it was me that had to move or get hit by him, two totally different situations. Come to think of it, seems some young guys these days are very selfish & think they rule the world.
