Re: www.footyjumpers.com

Have you considered having a separate HTML page for each jumper rather than just linking to a .gif?

It seems a pity that there isn't a way to acknowledge stuff like the yellow shorts mentioned above because the 'whole uniform' graphic commits you to just one pair of shorts and one pair of socks.

Agreed, should show all the combinations worn with that particular jumper.

Mero, you should put the sponsors on the jerseys:thumbsu: (on your site)

Re: www.footyjumpers.com

The new layout is good, it gives a much better feel for what the clubs were wearing. And you still have the old simpler ones which is good.

This has been discussed many times before. Simply isn't feasible to do without Mero paying mega-bucks to the AFL.

$100,000 actually. Which is what you pay to be a licensee of the AFL.

It's all relative, financially speaking, but you know, we could live on that sort of money for 5 or 6 months.

Re: www.footyjumpers.com

Where's the line though? You have every club logo on the site and the AFL logo is on some of those logos, along with being on the dreamtime at the G jumpers.

For one thing, the logos are hidden away in a folder, not representing the clubs, but reporting on what they used.
They are not amongst other teams, only within their own team.
For whatever reason, this context is important.

Other sites cannot use the club logos because they use them in a way to identify the team, therefore implying a connection between their site and an official status with the AFL.

As for logos on jumpers, I guess it's the same, there is no implication this is an official AFL product, and more importantly to them, they can't be used as such.
Once in the main forum we had a thread with Players Names on jumpers.
The AFL had a problem with posters used a sexual slur against a particular player, identified by his jumper number and club colours.
I still remember the guy's name, Total Package.

Re: www.footyjumpers.com

These rules sound very specific.

Mr Eagle's domain, law stuff.

In reality, that was the crux of the conversations I had with the AFL and legal people about whether I could do the site as I have done.
Technically I think they could shut me down, but they choose to leave me alone for the reasons above, and because they use it as a resource as often as anyone else.

Re: www.footyjumpers.com

Do you use a disclaimer on your site? In it you can also explain what you're legally allowed to do... answers to frequently asked questions.

Re: www.footyjumpers.com

I've seen sites, that have images in them that cannot be selected, highlighted, or right clicked and saved. Using Flash. And/or they use a custom bbcode. People could still screen-cap tho.

What I think you should do Mero is this....
Use flash embedding to prevent images being selected/saved. They see only thumbnail type images listed that have your watermark right over it. So that'll stop them screen-capping it. So if people want to view the image, they'll have to donate to the site to get a membership. Upon paying for a donation, they can click an image and see it larger without the watermark.

Re: www.footyjumpers.com

That idea sounds like it would annoy people like us more than newspaper editors or the AFL.
It also doesn't sound like Mero's style. He's even said that he's willing to give these people better quality versions of the images if they just ask.

Re: www.footyjumpers.com

Regulars on this forum could get a free membership and password, or a communal one, if he went that route.

I'm just making some suggestions if Mero is aggrieved at people stealing his images, and looking for a way to stop it.

Did you read the bit about not knowing enough about html?
And now I'm going to Flash?
Sorry, not my thing.
How about I leave it as basic as possible, and update the pages by copy & pasting one jumpers information, then typing over the relevant bits to update.
Which is what I do now.
This leaves the jumpers on each page which people here can link to, while giving the end gif file with a watermark.

Re: www.footyjumpers.com

An AFL-esque response.
For the 1 time they get used without permission, we disable it for the 1000 times they get used here.
I won't be putting JavaScript in.
But thanks for the offer.

I'm fairly sure the AFL would suddenly forget its mood of limited generosity if the site became pay-to-access in any way, shape or form.

I really can't see the AFL being pleased about this becoming a money-making affair (even if Mero doesn't technically make any money, only cover some of the costs).

You should consider adding a panel where people can donate money through PayPal for the site upkeep though (again, that was an idea from Chris Creamer's site), I'm sure a few of us and others would be happy to help.

See, this is what annoys me a little bit with it.
A second rate effort by The Age, obviously pinching graphics off the site.
Does anyone else have the little seam line up the back of the Collingwood jumper?
Or use the same number(22), let alone number font.

Re: www.footyjumpers.com

Wow, that's just awful. Is there anything you can do to stop that sort of thing?

I'd be emailing a complaint without doubt. Not to mention that any half decent graphic artist could have made it up in about 5 seconds using a photo of the guernseys. Really awful effort.

Mero, regarding the AFL's uneasy stance with you given that they use your stuff themselves but wont let you use logos etc, is there any way your site could become something more official and affiliated to the AFL? I guess it might mean you're working to deadlines etc, but you wouldn't have to walk on eggshells around AFL IP. Has that sort of thing been discussed before?
