Roast Yarran's Game

Really glad he had a game in which he bounced back strongly, tag or no tag. I take it he was still played in the back half? That, in itself, will be a steep learning curve for him so I would expect up and down games, as long as he keeps at it. :thumbsu:

He did - but the fact that GC didn't bother to tag him resulted in him constantly pushing up the ground.

Had a couple of shots for goal but unfortunately missed both.

Had he nailed both chances I'd be tempted to name him BOG.

He was dominant in the back half all night. The players clearly love the ball in his hands and it is not difficult to see why that is the case. But, as I said earlier, the real test comes when the opposition plonks someone on him who isn't interested in anything else but to stop him getting the ball, which you can bet Collingwood will be doing after what they've seen thus far this season from him, both against Richmond and GC, and preseason for that matter.

Its great to see just how much yarran's motor has increased from previous years. Especially considering last year he spent most of the time in the forward 50 yet he still seemed to drop off late in the game. Yet now he seems to be able to run off HB all day, credit to Yarran and shows what hard work can do in pre-seasons.

i dont understand what your referring to "footyrules69" but clearly your visually impaired and need spectacle to see this young talent

Very happy with his confidence last night, after the hiding he received at the hands of White against Richmond the week before.

I made a special point of watching White against St Kilda to see what he's capable of as I've never paid close attention to him before. Man, he's a wrecking ball! Not to the degree of Campbell Brown (or Mitch Robinson :) ) but he's tough as nails and - to use a familiar buzz word - 'uncompromising'.

The hard tag Yaz received v Richmond is definitely a compliment of the highest order. Premature, certainly - but had he been allowed to roam free against Richmond there would have been even more inside 50s on our stats, and probably a goal or two next to his name as well.

Glad he bounced back, displaying (hopefully!) that rather than being being demoralised by the experience he may just have learned from it. He seems to have some very McLeod-esque ideas. If he turns out to be anything as good as McLeod's left... knuckle... well, to use another familiar BF buzz word, *jizz*

How good was watching him handball underneath Magin (?) along the line and then turn him inside out heading back toward goal, threading a pass and effecting the switch.

Simply divine.

I needed a shower and a new pair of reg grundies when I saw that one. He tried the same thing last year I think and people were pissed off because it didnt come off and he gave away possession in a crucial game.

Gee, I feel a bit mean by not giving Yarran glowing praise for this game. But I just though it was "OK" by his standards. Perhaps it's because I know what a quality player like Yarran can produce. I just thought he missed a few targets under not much pressure (e.g. the kick to White in the 3rd), and while his evasive runs toward goal were impressive, perhaps he could have lowered his eyes on 1 or 2 occasions. What I did like is his desire to throw himself into a few ground level contests, and a few impressive one-percenters in the back-half that didn't register on the meaningless stat sheets or grab the attention of the TV commentators.

:)

The amount of pressure the opposition will feel if a half back kicks a goal is huge, reckon he's been told to have a ping at them any time he gets to 50 going by Saturday nights game plus the footage of pre-season games against Geelong and GWS. Can't wait for him to start nailing them.

This, plus spotting up a target would have been hard as the GCS were camped in our 50 on most of those occasions. ..

I thought he was brilliant last night, probably his best game for the club so far and has a very bright future ahead of him at half-back.

Sorry Sin, but I can't agree with this. "Brilliant" would have been to hit more targets by both hand and foot. The reason everyone has been congratulating the MC for the Yarran move was supposedly for the benefit the team would derive from his "silky" skills.

Don't get me wrong, last night he was good, perhaps even very good, but brilliant overstates his performance by a fair way.

I thought he was pretty good defensively, but he could have been much better offensively had he hit his targets.

Agreed.

I think I gave him BOG in the MVP voting last night from memory. If not BOG, very close to. And gave him my ROTY vote too.

He is so explosive! Very exciting to watch him burst out of half back with the footy in his hands.

Well, you don't have to. It's not always gonna be one way traffic like it was against GC. For a half back against a team that uses forward pressure like never before Yarran was a shining light.

I think many (mostly the Yarran baggers I suppose, who call him soft and unaccountable etc) probably expected him to wilt under the pressure, but I was damn impressed with the things he did and his confidence to accelerate the ball out of there. Maybe he had a few paniccy handballs, or maybe his handball skills in general need a little work (he probably didn't have to handball so much in his junior days :p I honestly don't know) but his kicking, speed, silky ground pickups etc...sublime.

He's still learning the defensive aspect, and indeed he may have let a couple easy ones slip through, but he also impressed me with his close attention and spoils etc. How's that closing speed?!

I agree that he was very good, I just don't think it quite qualifies as "brilliant".

I too am impressed with how he's going about things in defence, I think he's really relishing the role. And you're right, against teams that don't create quite the forward pressure of the pies, he will excel.

I guess I'll believe that he's arrived when he does it even against high-pressure teams, which I'm sure will come.
