Virtually everyone has applauded the move to HB and it has certainly paid dividends.

However from early on there were questions raised about his defensive side and more commonly bouncing himself into trouble. (This happened once or twice on the weekend again)

With his tank getting better would he be better suited to the wing? Is fast, takes the opposition on, kicks on both sides, delivers by foot well and knows where the goals are.

He's naturally an attacking player and delivering into the F50 (with the opportunity to kick some himself) could give us even more value than having to set up play.

Thoughts?

I don't mind him at half back as part of his learning curve but he's such a natural goal kicker I'd prefer him on the wing. Then his run and carry would either set up goals inside 50 or he would score the goals himself.

Has done well at half back though, some very exciting stuff. Is only 20 so the upside is incredible.

Ultimately......for now he's a weapon piercing through the opposition press....the risk is sides are already latching on to getting his direct opponent to drag him back to the goal square where this reduces his impact somewhat........it would be nice if both JR and Yazza have a big pre-season and tag-teaming down back with an option of throwing Yazz in as the defensive wingman.

This is his problem. He can play about a half of good, intense footy and then his tank (or lack of) kicks in and he drops out of the game

Give him a couple of years and he will be killing it off a HBF (if his defensive game improves) or wing.

Why is this brought up about every single one of our rebounding defenders?

Players who can run and carry out of the backline are extremely valuble in today's footy, especially with the advent of the press. Yarran does just that. We saw his value on the weekend when he effectively set up a goal from the kickout by taking a risk (which 99% of footballers in the competition couldn't pull off) and running up the guts.

I love him in defence and so long as he doesn't get exposed/isn't too easily negated, I'd leave him down there. It isn't like he doesn't find his way up the ground, with the way he runs with the footy. Seems to have a shot on goal every other week.

Don't know about our other rebounding defenders but I could see Yazz doing the job.

Both Laidler and Duigan can rebound well but I wouldn't put them on a wing.

Personally I'm a big fan of playing players where they play their best footy, not trying to re-mold players to fit a need.

Not saying that re-molding doesn't work but I reckon we would get more value from him a bit closer to goal.

Anyway, horses for courses, our views differ.:thumbsu:

With the press these days you need people who can run a carry the ball out of the backline and break lines. Yarran is the perfect fit for this and will continue to improve. Another pre-season of training to improve his engine and more importantly his one-on-one defense.

He is best suited in a HBF role and also taking the kickouts. Uses the ball well and when he goes short and gets the handball back he can bounce his way out of the defensive 50.

Can see him going into a midfield rotation in a couple of years time and being a 20-30 goal utitilty guy, bit like Bryce where he can play all over the ground.

Don't get me wrong, somebody with Yarran's physical prowess could play in any part of the ground. But for mine, down back he provides a point of difference that very few clubs have.

If he can harden up a little, I honestly think he'll be the best player in the league and one of our best ever. I'm seriously considering moving back to melbourne next year, just to watch him!

He is pretty much our Dale Thomas, but better in every respect bar courage. Speed, agility, size, skill, evasiveness...he's got the works.
