John Hinge
Age: 20
Height: 187cm
Weight: 85kg
Draft History: 2005 Rookie Elevation
Some say he was lucky to be elevated to the main list this season, and he hasn’t exactly had the most eye catching season for Glenelg. He’s played across the half back line, often deeper while playing on the opposition’s best forward. Two weeks back for example, he played on Ian Perrie and had a very tough time of it. He was giving away quite a bit of height, and seemed to struggle. His strength is probably his ability to match up on both talls and smalls, and he does seem to have a good ability to spoil the ball a long way and get his hands to most contests. He also has deceptively good pace and a not a bad pair of hands.
His weaknesses would be that he often gets caught out of position, and he is often a long way away from his direct opponent. As he likes to run the ball out of defence he can get caught out when the ball comes quickly back into attack. His decision making is also questionable; too often he puts his teammate under pressure. He is prone to having shockers and occasionally it seems that whoever his opponent is has a field day.
Overall I think he’s a decent young prospect. The AFC elevated him to the main list despite the fact that he only played a handful of league games last year so they obviously see some talent and think he may have what it takes to play AFL. I think it’s highly unlikely that he’ll ever be a star, but he could eventually find a place in the team playing a role similar to Jason Torney.
So I guess the main question that needs to be asked is will he be retained next season or is his time up at the Crows? I personally would like to see him on the list for at least one more season as I believe he is a versatile defender who has some good attributes that could see him becoming a useful AFL player.
