Draft History: 2005 Rookie Elevation

Some say he was lucky to be elevated to the main list this season, and he hasn’t exactly had the most eye catching season for Glenelg. He’s played across the half back line, often deeper while playing on the opposition’s best forward. Two weeks back for example, he played on Ian Perrie and had a very tough time of it. He was giving away quite a bit of height, and seemed to struggle. His strength is probably his ability to match up on both talls and smalls, and he does seem to have a good ability to spoil the ball a long way and get his hands to most contests. He also has deceptively good pace and a not a bad pair of hands.

His weaknesses would be that he often gets caught out of position, and he is often a long way away from his direct opponent. As he likes to run the ball out of defence he can get caught out when the ball comes quickly back into attack. His decision making is also questionable; too often he puts his teammate under pressure. He is prone to having shockers and occasionally it seems that whoever his opponent is has a field day.

Overall I think he’s a decent young prospect. The AFC elevated him to the main list despite the fact that he only played a handful of league games last year so they obviously see some talent and think he may have what it takes to play AFL. I think it’s highly unlikely that he’ll ever be a star, but he could eventually find a place in the team playing a role similar to Jason Torney.

So I guess the main question that needs to be asked is will he be retained next season or is his time up at the Crows? I personally would like to see him on the list for at least one more season as I believe he is a versatile defender who has some good attributes that could see him becoming a useful AFL player.

I have no idea why he played on Sarge the other week.
Willets was picked by the Power that week.

Micken has usually given Hinge the challenge of curtailing one of the opposition's most dangeous forwards in the last half of the season. He has rarely let the Bays down.

Worthy of keeping on the list IMO.

That was the week Port called up Willits for his debut, so the Bays were without their regular CHB, and North did have a bit of tall timber up forward. Hinge didn't stay on Sarge the whole game though I don't think.

edit: I should have read one more post!

someone please answer my question.
I'm really confused about the Rookie draft..I see hinge was taken in the rookie draft.
How can you qualifiy for this? I know truck, bass and bock choy was on our rookie lists in 2002 or whatever..

Can you pick anyone you want as a rookie in your squad?
Could we have got B.Gibbs last year, and placed him on our rookie list? :D :D

Oh and who is that guy from Sydney that got a special introduction to the AFC, we can keep him on our rookie list next year or something, is he any good?
His only 15, or 16yrs old btw

The player has to be 18 to qualify for the rookie draft. Anyone that is 18, and was overlooked in the National Draft is automatically eligable in the rookie draft.

In 2001 National Draft, Trent Hentschel, Nathan Bock, Martin Mattner and Nathan Bock didn't get picked up. They were invited to train with us until the pre-season and rookie draft which occur on the same day.

We picked up Trent Hentschel in the PSD because no one else picked him up when our pick came around. Once PSD completed, the rookie draft commences and we were lucky enough to have Bock, Mattner and Rutten available when it was our time to pick.

We didn't have any claim on these players what so ever. We were just lucky enough that they were available when we had our picks.

We cannot rookie list Gibbs because he is a certainty to be picked up in the National Draft.

The NSW teenager you are talking about, he is part of the development program AFL have running in NSW. Basically each club can recruit 2 teenagers and develop them. And if they are good enough then we can keep them on our list. I am not sure about the finer details of that though.

Hinge is worth another year IMO. He's a good height and has a bit of pace about him and would be groomed to eventually take over from Hart/Torney/Bassett. The only thing is, with a certain amount of players having to be delisted, who else could it be? Could he be delisted and picked up once again on the rookie list, as I doubt he'd be in the running for an AFL game next year either.

If he won't be in the running for a game in his 3rd year at the club that I don't think we can afford to invest that heavily in a player with no return. Its not like he is a ruckman or a KPP. He is a vanilla type medium that are available all the time.

Thanks for the info stiff,
I rekon we should send hinge packing.
Pfeiffer and douglas will be real good for us in a couple years.
Pfeiffer had the #1 verticle leap didn't he?
His fast too right?

Thanks to the Bays lads for clearing up Hinge vs Perrie. We had Coulter playing a key position on Digger, Josh usually runs off the flank and Digger kicked a lazy 7 on him so both sides had mismatches. I guess it contributed to the exciting contest.

Anyway, on Hinge, delist him, doesnt look like getting a game with the Crows so hes a waste of space. I had high hopes of him when i saw him playing in a preseason game against North/Norwood but now he doesnt look like hes gonna make it unfortunately.

They have kept Hinge yet got rid of Ryan Nye (who played in a flag last year ;)) which is puzzling.

Rowey always says that Hinge is going to be a real player of the future for Adelaide in defence and will replace Hart when he retires.

Personally I haven't seen enough off him to comment, but we will need HBF's and BP's in a year or two. Hart, Torney, Macca and Bassett aren't getting any younger.

Stop smoking drug and then posting on Internet forums. :o

I've seen Glenelg a fewtimes this year and Hinge never stars but shows enough to suggest he can play a bit. Unfortunately he often seems to stand blokes who are much bigger. Whether he stays or not will be an interesting call. This draft is meant to be so good we probably need to have five picks so there will need to be some tough decisions made. Presuming Clarke will retire, and Gibson seems to be in trouble, the club could still need to move on three or four players.

crows98 and macca23, have you seen Rooster Pfeiffer play? If you have you may think differently ladies.

And your infatuation with anything North Adelaide wouldn’t lead you to that conclusion?

Don’t worry RL, if he is as good as you make us believe, we will give him his due respect after he is drafted by the Adelaide Football Club.

Until then

He will get drafted, i just hope he stays in SA.

I would take Edwards ahead of him though. Also try and strike a deal with Brisbane to bring Roe home ;)

Not with a PCL injury

Excellent assessment.

However, I'd be leaning towards dropping him. I really just don't see him competing at AFL level. But if there's room, I wouldn't be averse to keeping him otherwise because he certainly has a natural talent that is hard to find, but he doesn't have the sort of presence and awareness you need.
