We need: small forward; key defender; outside pace with skill.

Target with 22/24: O'brien; Tim Kelly; Miers; Balta; Oscar Allen
Don't want with 22/24: Ling; Bailey; Fogarty; Ballard (Sam Taylor, Petty should be around our next pick at 35)

Players I don't want/rate at all: Wooller (slow motion player, Josh Walker clone), Worpel (turnover king, not skilled enough)

I expect Wells to draft Ballard at 22 and Tom McCartin at 24.

I'm expecting Wells to call Ballard and Ling just to troll me.

I wouldn't personally pick mccartin in the 20s either but one good thing is given our links with the mccartins via lucy and oscar brownless i expect we will know more about him than most other clubs so if we pick him it will be a fairly informed decision based on his capabilities. There are other players i would be more worried if we reached for.

We do get a bit hung up with the predraft ramblings about preconceived value ... If Wells picks McCartin.. id say fair enough.. they would be trying to fill a need. Same with Wooller. Both look below ideal but one does not get ideal with our picks.
One player to me that seems OBrien.. he is one left foot that looks Haw like in the way he can use the ball.. yet who knows what we know of him...where as ..McCartin..I agree if their is IP to know..we probably know it.

I think with McCartin being bottom aged it would give further justification for him to be "reached" for with a 20's pick. Personally I'd prefer others that are likely to be there with these picks in front of him but I can see why he'd appeal. I'm not sure how much more useful "IP" we would have on McCartin that other teams wouldn't? Maybe I'm being naive but everyone these days has access to his tapes, his athletic testing results, they can interview him etc. What more do you need?

The jungle drums seem to be that O'Brien will fall. How far? But he is one that I reckon could be a good fit for us. His interview on afl.com.au seems to show a guy that is determined to succeed. As long as he isn't the type to be anxious if success doesn't come too early then I can only see that as a positive. We need guys that can both run and kick. Tick, tick. If he's there at 22 we'd be silly not to give him some very serious thought.

Yep.

Ballard looks like another Blicavs, but more mid (opposed to second ruckman). Would be a poor decision. Last thing we need is a slow mid that can only handball due to being too slow to actually kick it. Ballard's highlights shows he's too slow to kick the footy in traffic and can only handball.

But Wells likes these weird tallish athletic utility types that don't really have any stand out qualities.

My concerns exactly.

Just wondering if anyone who is against Ballard has seen him play live? Or knows anything other than the highlights they have seen and the opinions from others they have read?

Thought the same with Nathan Krueger a Blicavs type but more keypost potential.

There are assumptions we all make on here ...so excuse me while I make one..let me assume that you have known someone thru a social gathering or work that is somewhat more comfortable in certain situations or around certain people who they feel comfortable with. I suspect that just like a job interview , some people can be good at putting on a face , but its not always the person you get without that mask.

So with that in mind.. it may give someone a better feel for a player if they know him outside the interview. While some RecTeams may ask a TAC coach or manager about a certain player ... how much easier would it be if you have know him for a while , in a relaxed environment where you see a player without the public facade

Based on the afl.com article it seemed wce most keen which surprises me as they need inside mids. But if they go allen or an inside mid at 13 and then a mid/kelly at 21 then he may get to 22 but i reckon its on the unlikely side (teens picks hard to predict though). Tbh if we really want obrien our best play is probably to make wce think we are keen on someone they really want (this might be kelly or another player) which might make them take that player at 21 and leave obrien for 22.

I get your point but how savvy are 17 year old kids in being able to bluff their way through an interview, masking potential character flaws? They do psych testing in addition to the interviews as far as I'm aware which are sophisticated enough to establish whether a participant is trying to artificially hide psychopathic tendencies!

Twomey has done a mock daft podcast. Has us going with Sam Taylor at 22 and Tom McCartin at 24 (yuck).

Surely Sam Taylor/McCartin would be available later in the draft.

Hope we finally have learnt our lesson that "reaching" just does.not.work (Lang, thurlow etc.)

Just get the best players that slip please.

Im not even saying its the case here... just saying there are advantages to knowing a player outside the system. Perhaps more for certain players personalities than for all. And Im not really talking about bluff etc..just that if someone is not the outgoing ego head.. perhaps you get a real glimpse of the person.... maybe something closer to what he will be like once he settles in and knows all.

I like twomeys writing style but neither he nor nat edwards are hugely well connected in club land like emma quayle was so i wouldnt place much stock in his mock drafts they are who he thinks will suit each club and thats mainly it. Brett Anderson is the main mock draft you want to pay attention to he is fairly well connected.

I think you're right. I'm expecting he'll go just before our pick, prob to WC as you say, which will make the trade of 19 for 22 to GC retrospectively a little frustrating. I mentioned a little while back though that I have the feeling that O'Brien isn't a target of Wells - if he was would we really have been prepared to trade that pick 19? Or alternatively maybe in the inner sanctum of recruiters there is consensus that O'Brien will fall into the 20's? I find that one a little difficult to accept though with all the ducks ans drakes that would be being played.

Ballard will appeal due to his versatility, he could end up playing any position on the ground bar ruck with sound development.

No club outside of WA is taking ryan with a top 50 pick he has professionalism issues and is a big chance to end up quitting. I would be staggered if we use 35 on him as you have suggested there.

Would be happy with Wooller and Kelly though.
Complete fiction.

Has improved his fitness, and every part of his game. Is a genuine star if he gets a club that cares for him effectively. He's made enormous inroads this year.

Has Anderson or Quayle done a mock draft?

His fitness is a bit better but his off field professionalism (diet, recovery, still been missing training sessions with his club etc) are still significant issues which is why clubs are very hesitant on him. I reckon he will go late pick or rookie and to wce or freo only other clubs won't risk him.

Emma Quayle works for GWS as a recruiter now so she no longer writes mock drafts.

Anderson will reportedly put his out at the end of this week.

Hoping for some sliding and counting on Wellsy doing his usual over-reaching with Petty ;

22 ; Zac Bailey
24 ; Harrison Petty
35 ; Jack Petruccele
58 ; Oscar Claravino
72 ; Dangers brother in-law
