I was listening aghast to the call, and won't lie, once it became clear (at, you know, half time) Geelong were going to best our season high score/win margin, I started doing what I always do in this type of game (which funnily usually involves Geelong): I sat there and hoped the records would be broken, high score, but especially margin, because it's the closest anyone has come in a long, long time.
And then the game was over. They didn't beat the records. Almost, but not quite. And I was left to consider the game.
After listening with delight, I now feel beyond horrible for Melbourne's supporters. All I could think was "I have no idea how I'd ever deal with a loss like this". I really don't. There is no upside, none at all. Melbourne supporters right now must feel like giving up for good. I can't even find words to describe how I would feel should this ever happen to Essendon, which I think is why I made the thread, to find out.
We're lucky enough to support a club that hasn't taken too many regular drubbings (just 10 over 100 points, the least besides Collingwood of the pre-National clubs), and as a result, I remember all those we did take, most of which were over the last few years, and how I felt.
- 98 points vs. Collingwood, 2010. Honestly, I was just happy it didn't stay over 100.
- 96 points vs. Adelaide, 2009 EF. After the emotionally charged win against Hawthorn in Rd 22, this pathetic whimper was not completely unexpected, but still terribly embarassing. Had no positive to take out of this.
- 108 points vs. St.Kilda, 2008. I was happy St.Kilda got their double chance, because I was really hoping Robert Harvey would win a flag, and Essendon were clearly to busy planning the end of season trip to care.
- 138 points vs Adelaide, 2006. The worst by quite a margin. I think of it and shudder, it's all I can do, because I quickly erased the game from my memory.
Basically, how would you feel if Essendon copped the kind of humiliation Melbourne were unfortunate enough to get today, and what's the worst you've felt after a big loss?
