I was listening aghast to the call, and won't lie, once it became clear (at, you know, half time) Geelong were going to best our season high score/win margin, I started doing what I always do in this type of game (which funnily usually involves Geelong): I sat there and hoped the records would be broken, high score, but especially margin, because it's the closest anyone has come in a long, long time.

And then the game was over. They didn't beat the records. Almost, but not quite. And I was left to consider the game.

After listening with delight, I now feel beyond horrible for Melbourne's supporters. All I could think was "I have no idea how I'd ever deal with a loss like this". I really don't. There is no upside, none at all. Melbourne supporters right now must feel like giving up for good. I can't even find words to describe how I would feel should this ever happen to Essendon, which I think is why I made the thread, to find out.

We're lucky enough to support a club that hasn't taken too many regular drubbings (just 10 over 100 points, the least besides Collingwood of the pre-National clubs), and as a result, I remember all those we did take, most of which were over the last few years, and how I felt.

- 98 points vs. Collingwood, 2010. Honestly, I was just happy it didn't stay over 100.

- 96 points vs. Adelaide, 2009 EF. After the emotionally charged win against Hawthorn in Rd 22, this pathetic whimper was not completely unexpected, but still terribly embarassing. Had no positive to take out of this.

- 108 points vs. St.Kilda, 2008. I was happy St.Kilda got their double chance, because I was really hoping Robert Harvey would win a flag, and Essendon were clearly to busy planning the end of season trip to care.

- 138 points vs Adelaide, 2006. The worst by quite a margin. I think of it and shudder, it's all I can do, because I quickly erased the game from my memory.

Basically, how would you feel if Essendon copped the kind of humiliation Melbourne were unfortunate enough to get today, and what's the worst you've felt after a big loss?

We lost in adelaide in 06 by a ridiculous margin.Lucky it was the 1 game here in the last 10 or so years that I missed.

Hey, with tomorrow coming up, I don't think I want to think about this@!:rolleyes:

Would not be surprised the bastards at Collingwood would get jealous of all the Geelong hype, and come out tomorrow and ruthlessly destroy us.

In saying that, I feel for the Melbourne supporters, worst performance I have seen us put together was the Adelaide game in 2006, I was 11 or 12 back then and remember watching the whole game on TV. It downright hurt and I remember copping it alot in primary school the following week.

I disliked the way the Demons supporters carried on after beating us, but I feel for them atm, they must be hating the guts out of this sport right now

No sympathy for Melbourne Football Club.

Their supporters have been rabbiting on for the last 12 months, about how good they will be in 2011.

And the funniest thing is that there was a thread on the Drafts and Trading Board getting posters to rate the trade value of their total list - And there was Melbourne Posters who rated their list as more valuable than Geelong.

My feelings are:

Why did we lose to a team who got beaten by 180+ points, but win against the team doing the thrashing?
We should have taken care of them the way we did Gold Coast.

I've hated Melbourne with a passion since I was 7 years old. I hate them more than I hate Carlton.

I have absolutely no sympathy. The Melbourne supporters, at least the ones in the MCC, are the most intolerable supporters of ANY club in the league. The thought of them sitting in their home theatres in Toorak and watching that gives me strength. I will live off their tears of sorrow.

My first thought was "HAHAHA, what a joke of a football club."

My second thought was "Geelong mean business, and in a world where the other top 4 teams are Carlton, Collingwood, and Hawthorn, there need's to be a champion for humanity."

My third thought was "Holy crap, we actually beat them a month ago."

Whenever there are drubbings like this, my father always brings up a few he can remember Essendon being on the wrong end of, like the Sydney one in 87 or the Hawthorn one in 92. But I think he always had faith (rightly so), that better times for the club weren't too far away, especially with the solidarity of Sheedy over those years.

Melbourne have no such luck. They've been crap since Barassi left. Blame Carlton, I guess.

Honestly, big differences in winning margins for football happen. Essendon's been at the receiving end of a few of them and I'm sure a few more will be on their way......just so our young tacker supporters don't miss out like our 70's and 00's counterparts have experienced.

As mentioned in other threads, the margin today doesn't mean Melbourne will finish last, nor does it mean that Geelong will win the premiership.

One coaches job is on the line, while another (all new to the game) has inherited a team full of greatness.....but on the down side of a dynasty. All in all, today's result doesn't matter too much in the scheme of the season, other than 4 premiership points.

Geelong didn't have it in them to break any records and 5 years from now, the game will all be forgotten.

My feelings about Essendon after Melbourne's loss is that on the Friday night we were beaten by the Dee's that we had a crack, but weren't up to the task.

Nothing more, nothing less. Just another 4 point game.

I remember when we were getting smashed by Geelong last year (Round 14 I think), pretty much all was lost. Especially after starting well.

I thought, "we'll give it right back to 'em some day", even though a win would be enough.

And then we had that win over them a few weeks ago and I felt like that loss didn't matter anymore.

That's football.

Likewise :p

I've taken great joy in seeing Richmond and Melbourne ge smacked around this year, only mostly because of the way thei supporters carry on on here.

True, especially the richmond ones, I took enourmous satisfaction out of that second richmond game purely for the dribble that was coming out of their mouths.

I won't feel so deflated if we lose by 10 goals after seeing the massacre yesterday. Great for my Supercoach though, 2200+ with 4 players including Capt yet to play :thumbsu:
