Sounds like an argument for academies...
Im all for Adelaide having an academy.
Im also not against the northern academies as I think the more talent the Northern clubs can get from Qld and NSW means more chance of the SA clubs being able to get the SA kids.
I think its important for all interstate clubs to have a strong % of local kids in their teams. It creates a culture of state pride and keeps downward pressure on their caps.

Take Thilthorpe, he was a Crows tragic, and one of his greatest childhood memories was watching Crows games with his Nana, as she loved the club. Playing for Adelaide was a dream for him. Now he is living that dream, and knowing his Nana would be loving him playing for us, we dont have to worry about having to over pay to keep him.
His last contract he didnt even entertain offers, and took way unders what the market would have paid him to stay here.
Playing for the Crows means more for him than an extra 500k a year.

That means so much for a club as it makes their cap better, reduces losing good players, and creates a culture of players who supported the club, playing for the club.

Thats the decision Brisbane have to make. A team will always pay overs to get a player, but its also dangerous to let good players go because of money when you have the ability to pay them. Sydney went two players less on their main list to help pay the wages of their players and keep them.

Its harder to find another Zac Bailey than to pay the one you have more.
People said the same thing when we got Eddie Betts. No small forward was worth 550k a year. It would destabilise the team by having him as one of the highest paid players. Now in hindsight do you think Carlton would have matched the Adelaide offer? Absolutely they would have.

Rightly or wrongly, I guess the list management team have decided that Bailey isn't someone we want to overpay even if it means we lose him.

You have a much more important and hard to replace player coming out of next year with Logan Morris. If you were going to overpay anyone, it would be him. Continuing to overpay players creates upwards pressure on future negotiations.

Like I said this is an argument as to why academies exist. Brisbane has priority access to their zone via the academy, where as Adelaide don't have the same sort of access. Yet by my rough count, Adelaide has essentially the same number of South Australians as Brisbane has Queenslanders despite not getting priority access.

Without the academy system, I doubt it the numbers would be so even, and then your point re salary cap benefits becomes more pertinent.

Jarryd Roughead!

Inexperienced Jarryd Roughead up against experienced operator Dom the prick. It’s going to be a bloodbath. Looks like meats back on the menu, lions fans.

Hmm, didn't Roughead offer a bazillion first rounders for Merrett last year and still couldn't get the deal done?

Dom the PRICK might get an easy win in this one?
Better hope Dom does well. Wouldn't want to be owned by the new guy. How embarrassing would that be?

Hmm so when we do end up matching and forcing a trade, what bounty will we pry out of the Crom. Exciting times await Lions fans. Could be looking at 3 first rounders.
+ Dan Curtin, I have heard he wants to join his baby brother in Lions colours, so a chance he could be the steak knives to get the trade over the line.

I’ve also heard this. Apparently not happy with the direction Nicksy is taking the club, which is unfortunate.

He isnt getting a million a year over his contract period. Like I said, the Crows have a ton of cap space and have been front loading all their players to amass a large nest egg. They will do the same with Zac.
I thought it was over two years are you okay with Zac being your highest paid player over the length of he’s contract?

That's a nice fairy tale. Got any more?

Bailey wants to stay at Brisbane but he also wants to get paid.

If Brisbane match, I wouldn’t worry about Adelaide walking away, I’d worry about Bailey popping the champagne and signing.

So if Brisbane are prepared to pay him $1.4m then go for it. Don’t know why they don’t just offer it now and get it done if that’s the case.

I would think that Brisbane are also looking at what is going to happen to their cap when the Ashcroft boys etc come up for their next contracts, and how paying Zac more might limit what they can do with them. Managing salery cap is a skill in and of itself.

There wont be any negotiations if he elects to come to Adelaide. Brisbane wont match the offer, so they will get their band 1 compo pick and be on their way.

Its not about one player, its about the team. I dont care what they get paid so long as they make us better. Its the club that has to care about cap space.
Also, the majority of players want to play in finals and win premierships. If a player comes in on more money than they are on, but it means they could win a premiership, they wont care either.

Lol. If you match then Zac stays at Brisbane. He is happy to stay, but the money is too good to say no to.
There wont be any negotiations after that point.

Bailey is worth $1.2M on an open market as an A grader goal kicking midfielder. Thilthorpe, Rankine and Dawson will be on that much for their next contract, we need to pay him $200K more so we don't loss any trade capital.

Its expected that the cap increases from 2026 to 2030 is going to be around 2-3 million at a minimum. So thats two Zac Bailey's extra in cap space.
The club has cap space, plenty, and will front end Bailey like they have everyone else, and when 2030 comes around they will have big money to offer a FA or trade
