One of the articles I read said that Goose played on Schultz and kept him to 1 goal (he kicked a bag last year against us in the VFL).

Also that Seany D played on Bowden and restricted him to 14 possessions.

Both of the guys looking good for later in the year, and we already have reasonable back-up in Armo, Gwilt, Eddy and Raph with King to return soon.

Begley and Miles seem a bit patchy form-wise for mine at this stage, but they are playing some good games along with Lynch and Stanley who are developing nicely.

Steven and Heyne could improve massively over a pre-season (no lack of talent).

It is getting pretty tiring. I have moved my "keyboard" acrosss from Saintsational to avoid this type of stuff.

Having said that, I enjoyed what I saw of Armo on Saturday as I have a soft spot for guys who run into packs without any fear (but agree with the general sentiment that he is capable of more in the second effort and spreading departments).

I agree that he's terrifically hard at it and I've really been barracking hard for him to get a crack in the seniors. I love hard nuts. So I was doubly disappointed with what I thought was his tendency not to run defensively or to give the option at the next contest. I could be overstating it. As I say, I missed a chunk of the game, but you've got to be Kenyan highlands-hard in your running to make it in the Saints team right now.

yes its a damn shame as I thought Army played well for most of his matches in the senior team last year. I think he's prob one of those players who steps in the AFL rather than the VFL.. Goose would be another one for mine.

Geary. I honestly dont know how he's held his spot this week.

Eat your own words after his game last night. Geary has had one bad game in 13 weeks. Not bad for a kid.

Mini is the only one who would come out for mine but only for another mid like Armo. Still mini hasn't really done enough to get dropped.

Feel sorry for Gwilt getting omitted. Raph and Goose are just waiting for Zac to string a couple bad games together but that doesn't look like happening because Zac is a cult hero now. Max getting injured or Blake getting dropped is more likely.

What do you guys think of Blake at the moment. Been great this year but he might be just out of position and a bit edgy of late for mine. potential straight swap for Goose or Raph. Raphael is just as good in the air but much better at ground level.

I could live with giving Blake a rest to give Goose a shot, but if you drop him for Raph I will lose it.
Players who perform well in the VFL deserve a shot at the team and Raph has had a shot.
There are others who deserve a try. Warming up for 5 games to adjust to the pace is not going to be an option this year.

Apart from that hawthorn game last year ive never really been a fan of blakes...

Just my opinion..

How far off is dempster guys??

He seems to be going pretty well for the Zebras but I'd like to think he'd be given at least 4-6 VFL games and be consistently amongst the best players before we brought him back into the seniors.

He's certainly an important player to our structure and it's a credit to the way he approached his rehab that he's back playing VFL 9 months after an ACL injury.

I don't mind Blake, but the words to describe him would be in the order of
"Versatile , reliable, hardworking, etc "
If we had another player who was
"Inspirational , amazing etc " to replace him with I'd agree that Blake would be the one to go out, as long as we didn't lose the "reliable".

I don't think there is anyone obvious at the moment though.

Looks like the Zebs are on TV tomorrow.

Will be interesting to see which one of the emergencies misses out this time. Would think that Gwilt will either be named for the Saints or will play in the VFL. Surely wouldn't be a spectator again?

And Simpkin FB (he is not a big lad by any stretch).

Armo and Jack half-back?

Howard still can't get into the 1's despite being the best player in the ressies last week. Cahill in the backline is also interesting (came to the club as a forward - we can only hope for a Sam F type development).

Some of the Sandy boy slooked like they didn't have a head on them at all, extract the ball, runners outside chain of 2-3 handballs end up with the Sandy player going back ino traffic of 4-5 Port players and getting pinged and Sandy hurt on the rebound. Was quite, well, moronic really seeing that happen constantly.

Heyne showed glimpses in heavy traffic with a wet ball as well, quite liked that he was dangerous in fits and spurts where he had a little bit of time instead of 4 opponents pack jumping him in that 2nd half.

I thought Lynch (14 possessions, 5 marks, but worked hard all day) was the best Saints player with the Zebs, but Seany D (18 possessions) was very good too.

Goose had 18 possessions and contested well, but his kicking let him down. I think the commentators were right when they said he seemed frustrated at not being picked with the Saints. Was also one of the culprits who didn't come out onto the ground with the others at the start ("browns cows" as Donegan said), and was a bad sign.

Miles did some good things, but dropped marks he should have taken. His kicking though was very solid.

Jack flashed in and out as usual. Some good tackles and ordinary kicks amongst his 14 possessions.

Gwilt had a shocker. Laid some decent tackles, but thought he'd dominate given the conditions and being on the cusp of selection.

Rhys wasn't that much better (Fanning gave him a bath), but did some OK things in the last quarter. The boggy conditions called for strong body work which he wasn't able to muster.

Begley was OK, and showed some courage (but got knocked out doing it).

Armo - not his best. Tried hard but got caught with it alot and his disposals weren't his normal standard (admittedly it was wet & windy).

Heyne had 16, but missed a shot you'd like him to kick and dropped an easy mark. Also let Cory McGrath run riot off him in the first quarter.

Smith showed some decent signs, but also got pressured too easily on occasion. 13 possessions and 1 goal 2 behinds.

Gaertner also struggled in ruck contests (too light), but was OK around the ground.

Good to see Simpkin and Howard have good games again in the ressies.

Where did Dempster play?

Played some midfield, but mainly in defence after half time. Stopped what looked like being a goal with a ripper tackle. Was too quick for opponents a number of times, and also sidestepped a few which is a great sign for his recovery.

I spoke to David Armitage at length and Sean Dempster to a lesser extent on Dempsters recovery earlier this year. Armitage and Dempster share accommodation and Armo was in awe at the work ethic of Dempster in his approach to his recovery. (It was probably no accident that they share - I'm sure Sean is the perfect role model for Armo re: work ethic). I am really pleased to see his hard work is starting to bear fruit. I hope Dempster can force his way back into the AFL side this year, and I certainly see him in our top 22 for next year and beyond.

Bit of an urban myth IMO... When you were playing well, and got dropped, then played ok in the VFL only to be shafted for R Clarke; how are you supposed to react? Very understandable for him and Goose to look flat (which they did).

It's like being 6' foot 6 in high school, 100kgs and getting picked last behind the skinny nerd for a wrestling team. At some time you say "enough is enough"

If Raph is not in our best 6, Lyon needs to stand up, admit his failure and address WHY he keeps getting picked. It's not enough to just keep doing it with no return.

Raph i about as useful as shares in ABC.

LOL.

I love a bit of sarcasm - a bit like Interpol's weekly match predictions.

It's quite obvious that Lyon sees Raph Clarke in our best 22. We have won every single game of the season, so he obviously knows what he's doing. The fact that we are top of the ladder after Rd 13 is more than enough justification for his weekly teams, wouldn't you think ?

No failure - no need to address anything but the accolades for the best start in our history.

Go Raphael Clarke !

Go Ross Lyon !

Go Saints !
