Everything Off-Season in Domestic Cricket

Would have preferred to keep Duffield and Beer, but hope they get opportunities elsewhere because both are clearly good domestic cricketers.

Tom Triffitt has rejoined Tasmania. Now have 5 potential keepers in their Shield squad!

Wouldn't have minded signing him to the Vics, could potentially allow both Handscomb and Wade to play as specialist batsmen.

Can anyone tell me how long Doran and McDermott both signed on for?

I've always said that no one truly cares who wins the Shield unless it's your state - the Shield is merely the pathway to the test team. Which is why I'd rather see Tassie playing Tasmanians, rather than playing teams that are over 50% imports.

This is especially the case if someone like 26 year old Jono Wells is told he'll never play Shield cricket for Tassie again, then they burn 5 spots on keepers, including 2 young "projects" who aren't moving to Hobart not to play.

Doran will almost guaranteed not to keep.

Its just getting silly now. Im not sure how good it is to have 5 keepers and only 1 keeping at the one time?
Doran is more of a bat, so he'll play, Triffitt will keep, Dunk and Paine will fight out a batting spot. Just not sure why/how McDermott fits in?

It has to be a balance. If Tasmania had South Australia's results over the last 10 years I dare say fringe test selections of Tasmanians like Bailey, Doolan and Doherty would never have happened (ooh I hear the "good"s from the rest of the country :p). If you play in a winning team your case gets pressed forward. You only have to look at the AA team in the AFL for further proof of that.

If the goal of the Tasmanian team is to produce Tasmanians for the test side then I think the import strategy has supported that in recent times. If the difference is Bailey/Doolan/Doherty get a baggygreen and Wells has an 8 year FC career v. Bailey/Doolan/Doherty don't get a baggygreen and Wells has a 12-15 year FC career then it's not much of an argument for mine.

The issue would be if a mediocre import getting results is keeping a genuine local talent out of the side. I don't think there have been genuine local talents left on the sidelines. If Hilf/Bird/Faulkner are all available together next year we may see that play out with Fekete v. Rainbird but to me it hasn't been an issue in the past.

Ben McDermott signed a 2 year rookie deal, Triffit a one year deal, I thought Doran signed a 3 year deal but i could be wrong.

Dunk and Doran will be trying to get spots as Batsmen it seems, with Triffit and TP competing for the keeping job.

Triffet could play as a bat only in the shorter form as well though.

Interesting times ahead for all involved

I do not understand why Tasmania have got 5 listed wicketkeepers.

Some recruits wont get a game, and recruits are usually guaranteed a game if they move to a different state to get them across

Jake Doran is a ripping batting talent. He shouldn't be wearing the gloves anyway IMO. McDermott won't play yet, he's on a rookie contract. There is really 3 that are battling for the gloves.

They're contracted to Tasmania for next year so I'm not sure what that means?

As in Dunk has never demonstrated that he is shield standard and Paine is no longer shield standard.

They shouldn't be and the new contracts suggest they are not, in contention for a spot in the best XI

Fair enough, they did come out and say Paine is the incumbent keeper and will need to be pushed out but I agree with what you are saying partly.
