2015 Draft Discussion

Sorry i'm unsure of the changes to the bidding system. What would we have to use to get him?

That answer is entirely dependent on what other clubs are willing to pay. If nobody bids, we use our last pick. If someone bids pick 3, we have to match it (via a formula) or let him go.

But obviously that club has to follow through and then use pick 3, so they can't just bluff to make overpay.

Both Keays and Hipwood have been variously rated by different judges anywhere between 10ish and 30ish. But we're still 5 months from the draft so a lot could change.

Was this what Eddie Mcguire was pushing for?

Unlike many of you I am not the biggest fan of William. I am willing to be persuaded on him but there are others I would prefer to take ahead of him (eg Weller is one who springs to mind). It is worth noting that he went at 42% by foot on the weekend .

Another who gets a lot of positive feedback on here is Nate Dennis. He is one who I just cannot see making it. FWIW I consider Buzza the best ruck prospect of the Qlders this year and the fact that he could be a very handy forward is a big positive. Buzza is taller than Mumford and plays in much the same way in the ruck. Having that kind of physical presence is something which would be very handy for our side.

I wanted the Lions to pick him up purely because of his name... Zorko crumbing off Buzza in the forward line - but good to know he has positives other than his name

I must say I haven't been this excited for a draft in a while, it dosen't appear to be a lot of depth in this years draft. But it would appear we will get schuache or weitering plus Ben Keays and Eric Hipwood who are both talented Queenslanders. The other thing that should be on our wishlist is a ruckman
Anyone know who the best rucks are?

Nate Dennis is on our Academy list and could be a good future prospect. Wylie Buzza is another, but hes a late rookie option. Theres also Chol, first name Marboe or something, I keep forgetting...

Yeah there are a few academy selections that have a bit hype around them

The thing that could work in our favour with drafting hipwood and keays is there is mills, hopper, weideman, kennedy and dunkley that are all father/son or academy players to teams either in the 8 or on the border and therefore will push any teams pick later in the order and in turn will mean our matching bids will have less of an impact on our remaining and future picks

Think we might just get 2 consecutive picks in the draft if the amount and contract lengths thrown around for Leuey are true. Seems like a few clubs are interested.

William is one I have just deadset not even bothered to form some sort of opinion on. Just haven't seen enough on him to make my own opinion.

I tend to change my mind on the Queensland boys a bit now. Not sure why.

Dennis has actually impressed me a lot this year and I'd be surprised if he didn't end up on our list. Basketball background and still fairly new to the game from memory. I've seen enough where I could see him making it.

Buzza is interesting. I've done a lot more research on him in recent weeks and seen a lot more footage of him. He's someone I'd like to have on the list. Potential in spades.

In an article about Sydney's interest it mentioned teams were talking about at least $450k per year. That'd put us in the after our second round pick or better area.

Pattykwasagun mentioned offers of over 500k for 4 years. If a few clubs want him it could easily push to 550k a year.

That puts him in the same category as Frawley so based on that we would expect the same compensation. Not sure how much the age difference would count against the compo though.

From the AFL site:

In addition to these six rookie-listed players, each club can include up to three additional players (now referred to as Category B rookies) on its Rookie List provided the player either:

• has not registered in an Australian Football competition for three years immediately before inclusion on the Rookie List;
• is an international player, meaning he is not an Australian citizen and has not lived in Australia for a substantial period;
• is a former NSW Scholarship player with that club;
• is a former International Scholarship player with that club;
• is a rookie Zone Selection for clubs based in NSW or Queensland.

IRISH ROOKIE PRE-SELECTION

Irish players can be signed directly to a club’s Rookie List under the International Player Rule and do not have to go through the draft. Previously, Irish players could not be listed as Category B rookies but took a spot on the main Rookie List.

Clubs can now list one Irish player as a Category B rookie but for each additional Irish player rookie listed, that player will be deemed to be a Category A rookie and the club will forfeit its last selection in the Rookie Draft for each additional player listed.

not big on our agenda once they moved to Category B on the rookie list, since we can get Local talent on that list, even then we did get Hanley in

Just read a little about Schache. Wouldnt it be great to get him. He said it would mean something extra to play for the club his dad did. I feel he would instantly buy in and by all reports is the gun forward we need. So let the tankathon continue and bring this kid home.

The thing is can our tank beat Carlton's - they are the masters of the tank

I have a feeling Buzza might not make it to the rookie list. Surely some club is going to have a late 'lazy pick' - where all their immediate 'needs' have been drafted for, and it's like "Hell, we've got an extra spot to fill. We just could draft another decent mid - OR .. we throw a pick at a big kid who could be absolutely anything or absolutely nothing in five years".

Dixon throws a spanner in the works doesn't he. Jeez it would be a shame to miss out on Schache, a #1 pick tall forward who wants to come to us, please. We may regret it next year but surely it is worth considering going into deficit if we can get both. Imagine if we went into deficit, got a PP AND draft picks for Aish and Luey. We'd have a serious shot of getting all these blokes we are discussing, wouldn't we? On Draft day we would be like me on a pay day going into a casino. We have a rare opportunity to get a number of great prospects who aren't just open to coming to the Lions, but we are their first choice. Right when we need them. Hard to imagine a more ideal scenario. And it would be a real pity to miss out on the academy boys. I'd love to see more QLD'ers in the team. Can't wait for Draft day!
