If we picked up McDonald what do you do with Jackson and Treacy when Darcy is fit?

What do you do with cox and Pearce if you get Sam Taylor ?
What do you do with Hayden young Mathew Johnson and Neil Erasmus if you get Chad Warner?

You are allowed to rest kpp players on the bench you know
Rotations , Matchups , player management 😜injuries 😜the likelihood of Amiss Tracey LMcdonald Darcy Jacko all being available for selection at once wouldn’t be more than a handful of times a season .hardly a conundrum Dominguez

We're not Manchester City. With a salary cap you can't afford to manage your list like that. Even if you could, anybody who's best 22 quality is going to ask to be traded if they are the fringe player because they'll get offers to play every week.

I said this in the McDonald thread on the DTFA board, but Treacy shouldn’t be considered a barrier to recruiting McDonald.

Logan is a blue chip bona fide forward and Treacy is blue collar role player.

Freo won’t walk away from opportunity to recruit McDonald because Treacy is showing a bit.

The club might consider trading Treacy to recoup some of the capital spent on Logan, could be a player for player trade with a pick going over with Treacy, or the club could decide to re-tool treacy as a KPD. His size and work rate would work just as well in the backline as it does in the forward line.

Would give you McDonald, Jackson, Amiss as talls in forward line with Jackson pinch hitting in the ruck.

Amiss and McDonald would be perfect combination, they could rotate playing chf/ff. McDonald would be a better genuine partner for Amiss.

I get your point . But I think maybe Hayden Young to Half back might work😉

McDonald blue chip? I think Treacey to date has had a stronger season than McDonald .
Treacey creates goals for his team mates ,I don’t see this with McDonald .
I actually think he is a little soft TBH.

I was waiting for this.

If you assess KPF’s based on widely held ideas of what they should be pack-crashing, contested marking beasts ala Kennedy/Riewoldt/Lynch I can understand you’d be underwhelmed by Logan.

There are a lot of subtleties to McDonalds game that go unnoticed. I think he is genuinely one of the smartest forwards. His ability to create space between himself and the defence and lose his man is the best of all young KPF

It doesn’t look special on tv cos it looks like a Joe the goose goal, or an uncontested mark in space, but there is alot of work that goes into creating the space for that to happen.

His work rate and running ability is also far better than any young forward. He’d blow Amiss and JUH away in that category. There aren’t many KPD’s that can match him in that area. He can blow them up over the course of a game.

I think he has areas of his game he needs to develop. I’d like to see his contested marking improve and an improvement in his general presence in F50.

My view is there is a bit of jockeying for position at the swan in a post buddy world, and I’d like to see Logan really stamp his authority as the main man in their forward line this year. I think that collision between Haywood and McDonald is a good example of what I mean. If Logan had established himself as the big dog, Haywood pulls out of that contest knowing it’s Logan’s.

I think Logans a really smart forward with good leading patterns, who can play deep leading out of goal square or play higher up delivering it inside 50 and kicking goals from further out.

I’d have Amiss playing 60% FF and 30% CHF and Logan the inverse. Noting as well that Amiss isn’t great with his kicking 45+ out at the moment.

Consider the above and have a look at his highlights from last year. I think you’ll understand what I mean.

That’s kinda my point tho - people are up in arms over getting McDonald- convinced that Treacy walks out the door the second Logan walks in … yet in the very next breath harp on “I’d prefer Warner or Taylor” - like somehow that won’t mean we lose(guaranteed) and or Johnson (big possibility)

Is cognitive dissonance at its finest

Likewise how many times are we going to play the 3 kpd if Taylor comes?

So does cox get traded back to SA?

Of course but that has a flow on effect there to aish, Walker , Chapman?

And Erasmus? , would be traded and we d likely get a pick in the late 20s AT BEST , yet there’s every chance he still makes it (Dec bday in draft year)
So we’ve effectively “wasted” a top 10 pick.
And Johnson- you think he’s going to enjoy being playing on flank or wing for rest of his career?
He’s out the door- another top 10 talent wasted
All to get slight upgrade ,if that ,over getting in Warner .

Yet with McDonald there’s really only a very small chance we lose Treacy (rookie pick), if at all

I think Jackson and Treacy have enough versatility to make it work with Amiss and McDonald in the same side.

I don’t think we’d see all 4 lining up in the forward line at the same time very often.

Jacko will be free to unicorn and Treacy has potential to develop into a swingman (as well as offering a ruck chop out on the occasions that Darcy or Jacko are unavailable).

It would give us some tactical options to change things in-game, and also very good injury cover.

I'm hopeful but not optimistic about the clubs choice to extend Darcy last year. If salary caps weren't a thing then by all means having both Jackson and Darcy would be great.

The problem we have is that Darcy isn't a forward - he kicked 4 goals in total last year which Jackson has already achieved this year in 2 games.

So we are paying ~800k for someone who won't reliably kick us goals when they are perched in the forward line for 30-40% of their game time when that money could be going to luring a McDonald/Taylor/Warner. As well as the added draft compensation we would get from Geelong if we made that trade.

I love what Jackson is currently doing while he has the ruck to himself but I am still genuinely looking forward to seeing how we go with both of the big blokes in the team.

Im curious as to what Darcy would be worth in a trade now if things went pear shaped. Would we be looking at same as Grundy?

Alex Pearce is 30 in 2025, and who do we play on the power forwards next?
Both Alex and now Cox have had serious injuries.
Treacy is the obviously candidate as he can do it all. Plus if we lose that
aggressive nature, well don’t bother dreaming of a flag without it.
Tabs is finished, backup, to lose Josh to gain McDonald is just plain dumb.
The Crows forward line worked in 2017, more options, difference and the
matchups for the opposition are a mare.
Then an injury to Darcy? Treacy maybe not regarded as the Unicorn but he is
a stallion.

I’d be resting Fyfe for the rest of his playing days if it was up to me.
JOM is another one that is only a part time mid, and realistically is also on
borrowed time.
Fyfe is still a champ, but just like Danger, Scott knows when to make a change.
Erasmus not playing is long term a mistake, Johnson is already getting games.
I’d love for Neil to get a few games as a medium tall, instead of the sub.
Treacy, Erasmus, Emmett and that’s some finals type pressure.

Thanks for your analysis very well thought out. TBH the main gripe I have with all this get McDonald talk is the corresponding ditch Traecey talk , They are very different players so if we lost Treacey and draft picks to get McDonald I would be one pissed off ombré.

corresponding ditch Traecey talk ,
Literally no one has said that tho.

Everybody's just ASSUMED either Treacy would walk himself or the club would trade him- making note that they offered him a contract for 3 years just last year - and clearly we’ve been targeting Lmac before even then meaning the club doesn’t see it that way either

No worries. Just putting my two cents in.

My personal view is getting Logan across is a no-brainer and the Treacy situation will work itself out.

I have noticed this board can be a bit anxious and finicky on big trades and preoccupation with TPP position, I think Freo would be wasteful if they went back to the draft this year with the hand they have, and where better to invest resources (picks/salary) than your forward line?

I must be misreading the room then, But let me rephrase my post and say that if we pay two first rounders for McDonald and Tracey seeks a trade because of it , I will be one very pissed off ombré.

If McDonald is up for grabs you bank talent regardless. But we need a specialist small forward.
A mature plug and play would be ideal, similar to when Port chased Rioli.
If not we need B/A in the drafts, and develop our own. Or we have an all rounder
already here in Simpson. Who needs games asap.
I think we could play Amiss, Treacy, McDonald with cameos from Jackson.
But you need speedy types waiting for the crumbs. Freddy, Simpson, and
Emmett with Erasmus to lockdown.
Unfortunately we will lose Sonny and Fyfe shortly, but the club owes them
at least 2 consecutive final campaigns.

Treacy isn't our full forward who would be moving aside for McDonald. That's Jye Amiss. They are the first back to the square.

Good thing Jye can play almost every position in the forward fifty.

There’s nothing wrong with Amiss spending 30% time a bit further up the ground. He can use his contested marking to give an outlet on the wing or from kick outs, and also get his hands on the ball a bit more and get involved in abit more link up play. It would round out his game nicely.
