Alarmed by the drain of its finest players from Perth to Melbourne, the WANFL board decided to make a stand, and refused to endorse Jackson’s transfer. Syd’s only option then was to stand out of football for a year.

Jackson spent his first year at Carlton as coach Ron Barassi’s runner – which at least gave him some valuable insights into Barassi’s methods.

Had many heated battles against Lee Adamson Syd would be sensation in today's footy his defensive pressure was underrated

Lee Adamson had a very negative attitude to Syd Jackson. Game after game. Plenty of opportunities given Carlton and Collingwood played each other in finals. I probably mentioned this in 'Down Memory Lane' but Adamson sledged Syd for not going in hard enough by calling him 'yellow'. Syd retorted 'You must be colour blind mate'.

I love Syd. My favourite moment was his snap goal from the boundary in the 3rd quarter of the '70 GF. One of the best.
