Don't think we'll go back to Rich. For whatever reason (and this just the way I've read it anyway), Fages seems to have been more glowing in Gunston's "training block form", as opposed to Dan's for whatever reason.

Duncan and Smith are both in the upper echelon of gut running wingers in the competition, I wonder if there could be a left field selection in Harry Sharp for this game. The Cats demolition of us in last years Prelim was astonishingly good, they also seem to have found form, I am really worried about this game.

The nightmare scenario for this game is if we go in with too many below par runners... please no Gunston or Rich.
At least if we lose there will be "learnings."

But if we drop Gunston, who will play on the wing? Surely he was a great option matching up on Lachie Hunter last round and Fagan would no doubt be eyeing off Duncan or Smith as Gunston’s opponent on the wing this week.
You make some good and generally well thought out (although controversial) points, but harping on about playing Gunston on a wing is a bit rich. He might have started there at the bounce but would have immediately been instructed to roll back into defence and someone from the forward line (probably a winger) roll onto Hunter.

Nah, he was lining up at the restart and attempting to play the wing role for a significant part of the game. It was unfolding right in front of me from where I was sitting. Melbourne responded by attempting to play down the side he was lining up on.

Regarding Rayner, the question is, are there any circumstances under which Fagan would drop him from the senior team? After over 5 years at the Lions under Fagan the answer appears to be no. This means that a set of circumstances apply to Rayner that don’t apply to many other players on our list. That is a problem and it has impacted on the way he has been socialised as a footballer and the way he prepares and performs. Time for some tough love for Rayner and others if we are to take the next step. No more “learnings” we need to see RESULTS. Given the talent on our list and our great run with injuries we are massive under performers.
No one running around in the VFL is better than Rayner including Ah Chee.
Results ? we are 3rd on the ladder.

I doubt that statement is anywhere near the truth.

Dayne Zorko today >

Lions must learn to be 'bold and brave' in next close finish

FORMER captain Dayne Zorko says Brisbane needs to be "bold and brave" next time it's faced with a close finish.

"There was some contest stuff there we weren't really good at, but time management, game execution, skill execution, still being bold and brave when we needed to be," Zorko said.

"Especially in that last seven minutes, we fell away from what got us in that position.

"The boys seem confident they can fix up those areas and hopefully we don't have a repeat of that."

Zorko said kicking long down the line played into the opposition's hands and had been identified as one of the areas to improve when the heat was on.

We've been struggling with long down the line kicks since 2019. I still have nightmares about the last quarter of that GWS final.

Better is of course subjective. Talent and Skill wise, I am sure most rate Rayner above Ah Chee but fitness/endurance, as well as the ability to play a role for 4 quarters, you give the edge to Ah Chee. Cam is more likely to be involved in or start a chain that gets you a game winning goal. Ah Chee is more likely to give you a consistent effort over a full game.

Wilmot was using the Daniel Rich playbook.

Shuddering at the thought of Rich coming in and trying to corral a Gryan Miers forward entry while 25 metres away from him - Hawkins chest mark for his 5th.

No choice but to bring brutal 4 quarter pressure football this week.
I think we will see it. Parts of last week we looked every part a top 2 team.

Really that is your answer.
What do you want me to say? Gunston lined up on the wing, manning up Lachie Hunter for a significant period of the game. Sometimes he went forward and was swapped out and late in the game he went into the backline as a spare, but I stand by my statement that he lined up on the wing for a big chunk of the game. You are saying you don’t think that is true, but I was sitting on the wing and he was right in front of me.
Other people have remarked on the fact that Fagan was playing Gunston as a wing. It is not open to interpretation, it is a fact.

That’s the near enough is good enough approach. Success is about winning Premierships, not making the finals and going out in straight sets (2019, 2021) or making the Preliminary Final and getting smashed (2020, 2022). When you consider our record, during a period when the fabled “Premiership Window” is supposedly open, we have not even been able to manage a half competitive performance in a Preliminary Final, let alone come close to winning a flag.

Loathe as I am to contribute to this - Gunston was lined up on the wing in the early parts of the second quarter in addition to the last. I know because he was RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME and I was getting annoyed.
… and the First Quarter, where he was playing the wing on the Member’s side.

Yes that was some of the worst bombing it long we have ever done, mainly into F50 that night, so frustrating.
I can see why they were panicking given how inexperienced the team was that night - we were just too green and Nick Haynes played the game of his life. You'd have thought we'd have taken plenty of learning's as a result of bottling a final, but here we are in 2023 where we threw a game by doing the same thing.

Yes in the bitter disappointment of the last 7 minutes it has to be remembered that from half way through the 1st quarter to half way through the 4th quarter we played some of the best football we have played in the last 5 years IMO, it was exhilarating elite level footy.

… and that is down to Fagan and his failure as a coach to send the players out in the last quarter with a clear strategy to ice the game.

See you on all on Thursday night.

Well if you are above 195+ and standing around in a pack next to 2 ruckmen, wouldn't the best thing to do be run side wise from the pack and to the wide open space on the other wing maybe? At least give the kicker an option as a big marking target moving towards open space so he can aim for it. Who knows, the sidewise lead might force a few to run after you opening up a hole in the middle too may be.
