Anyone who trades for Dangerfield now it quite simply stupid, when he becomes a free agent (restricted?) at the end of the next year.

If you look at the list of possible free agents at the end of next year James Frawley wouldn't be rated in the top 10 if he was part of the group.

Simply put, we should get Clark, trade for 1-2 other youngsters and maybe pick up a mature aged ruck as back up, but then let's continue to rebuild, keep some cap space open and really assault the FA and trade market at the end of 2015.

Some bloke named Jeremy Cameron also comes out of contract at the end of next year, his bidding war will make Chris Judd's saga look like Mitch Robinson's situation now.

Who are the Youngters. I only know our Interest in O'Rourke

Demons denied priority pick, good news for us.

well if they got Priority Pick we would be pushed down further;)

Glad the AFL Told the Dees to get Stuffed with there Priority Pick

Hawkins, Cotchin, just to name a few.

seriously though frawley is not worth pick 3. i mean hawks didnt even get a top 10 pick for buddy. no way dees should get pick 3.

If you are designated band 1 then the club gets a compo pick straight after your first round pick. Thomas got us pick 11 after we finished 10th.

that's not how it works unfortunately

Yep. The system is designed so cellar dweller teams aren't as disadvantaged when talented free agents inevitably leave for greener pastures.
Comparing compo pick numbers is pointless. It's not about which player is more talented, it's about helping the teams that are hit harder by talent leaving.

It's one of the few systems the AFL has implemented that I actually agree with.

Yeah I agree, I quite like the compensation system as it is. People will complain but we need to continue to keep the competition as tight as possible, something which has come apart at the seems in the last few seasons.

It can encourage tanking & reward failure.
Bottom teams already have advantages of earlier draft picks, a softer draw next season & perhaps financial assistance via Football Department Tax & or other equalization measures.
If you think you are going to lose a tier 1 Free Agent & you cannot make the final 8, then the incentive to tank is even greater, as you will get 2 early draft picks.
Picks 2 & 3 is obviously far superior than picks 5 & 6.
The suspicion of tanking will never go away.
Reward for mediocrity is never the solution.

That's not the point. If Hawthorn were rubbish they would have got pick 3. The compensation picks are in place to protect the average clubs.

As a strong club Hawthorn can offer potential premiership success and a big wage to whoever they get to replace Buddy. As a cellar dweller Melbourne only have money. Melbourne will trade pick 3 and use that as their leverage against the lure of a premiership.

Without weighted compensation we'd end up with half a dozen teams just feeding the contenders when their players come out of contract. The AFL has it right currently they only change to the model, IMO, is the FA in diluting the compensation. Amending that clause would encourage prudent choices.

Edit: it looks like Apex nailed things while I was preparing my post! Great minds and all ;)

What reward is there in bringing this young talent through only to see it poached 6-8 years down the track? Melbourne are in this hole due to their own poor decisions it's not the systems fault.

It's hardly reward for failure. Pretty sure no club genuinely wants to lose A grade talent they've developed themselves in return for a high draft pick...

Jezza is the clubs top target apparently for our first big foray into FA

for me - our fwd line is set (if we managed to get clark, cloke and clark will make a very good combo. we will finally have the two fwds we so desperately wanted for the past 2 yrs. meaning reid goes back to defence where he trully belongs.
-our defence is set- just need them to gel now. with reid going back to defense we will be protected against the long bombs and toovey will finaly go back to nullifying our oppositions mid sized players. we just need to settle our rebound, reid is a good rebounder. langdon should develop into a very good rebounder.
-its just our midfield that needs support. we need to sort out our wingers . (young failed horribly). we need to sort out our clearance specialists and our outside runners.
-we should play grundy and witts in the same team with clark and cloke in the fwd line. it is clear that they both play very well when they play together on the field. all the good teams have two good ruckman (hawks-hale,ceglar ; freo-sandy,clarke )
-we are set for small fwds- elliot and benken are very good impact players. both can develop into players capable of running through the midfield (ala hawks, sydney, geelong do with their small fwds)
-if we can sort out our midfield for next year , work out our fwd leading patterns we should be right in the hunt for finals. unlike others who believe that we will regress even further next year, i believe that we will actually be much better provided we maintain a better injury profile.
