Roast Has Opening Round been totally botched?

Having the northern states open the round with exclusive marquee games is fine, and probably a good expansion tool.

But it should so obviously be a split round. Nothing is gained by adding this advantage to select teams to further unbalance the comp.

So the way to capitalise on the momentum is to do nothing?

Yeah except no sporting team has ever succeeded up there

The sooner they stop kidding themselves with the Suns the better

And no sporting team at one point ever succeeded in Perth. Or Adelaide. Or Brisbane.

But you’re from Carlton so you have a God given right to a team.

Despite having 100 years of history at your beck and call and all the resources and backing and fanbase…..
Over the last 23 years you’ve achieved basically as much or as little as the Suns have in 13.

In fact they won 2 spoons, you’ve won 5. Their ratio is much better than yours.

They started from scratch - AND they blew a heap of money on a rugby league player. What’s your excuse?

Either have the marquee game or not. Whatever benefits the club most. But having their cake and eating it too by playing both weekends impacts the integrity and balance if the comp and is unacceptable.

And before any whataboutisms come up; yes those should be stamped out too. The response of an uneven comp is not to add more inequities. That just takes it further away from where it needs to be.

If Carlton was playing in front of empty stadiums, constantly losing their best players, gifting players to other clubs etc you may well have a point.

Does it matter? ‘Yeah we are terrible but lots of people get to watch us be ordinary and we manage to do it with some great players.’
Of course it matters.

Major difference between heaps of people supporting a club financially by rocking up every week and playing in front of nobody in a place where nobody gives a toss about them.

To who? That club and no one else.

In reality it doesn’t make much of a difference to the AFL’s bottom line in the grand scheme of things. Even a club bringing in bugger all fans at the gate equals an extra game a week and therefore a much bigger tv deal.

Well that’s not the point. Collingwood v Carlton will happen this year and get 95k. NSW and QLD has to be prioritised as much as possible for the sport to gather momentum up there. You could put Collingwood and Carlton on Christmas Day and it’d be sold out.
Cricket pitch in for the next day or nah?

I don't think it was completely botched, it was just one of the dumbest ideas to come from AFL House in a long time.

Starting a week earlier and getting an extra bye in the season is an advantage in a league that already has a compromised draw. Baffling.

Dunno about anyone else but I felt like that was far more of an event than last week. Something about watching a game with a big crowd at the G that just can't be replicated.

Pretty pumped to see two more teams today play their second game of the season whilst most others are yet to step on the field. Absolute circus.
You really waited until midnight just to post that? Gee whiz.

Wasn't at the game but the crowd seemed noticeably more quiet on TV when compared to other 80k+ crowds. Even the commentators mentioned how quiet it seemed during the broadcast.

I thought they made a fair bit of noise, was definitely a bit of nervous tension at times though.

Interesting to see all the pundits saying they all liked it without really explaining why. For me it was like a bye round on steroids. You know how we all LOVE the bye rounds. Supercoach and Fantasy irrelevant too if you're into that.

AFL is probably one of if not the most unfair fixturing of any major sporting competitions going around. I know lets make it even more unbalanced that it already is!! The designation and spread of the byes to different clubs is a joke.

Maybe because it was the first thing the new CEO has put his stamp on people are loath to/don't have the balls to criticize. However it should criticized because it diminished the first round of the competition for the majority of clubs and supportes. IMO of course.

That's channel 7's coverage. It's been discussed a number of times on here that their ratio of commentators is about 80 to the crowd noise 20, when really it should be 50.50.

It's been an issue since covid, in fact, the fake crowd noise used during covid had more atmosphere than what the morons serve up on their telecasts these days.

I didn't mind the round zero thing, good for the northern states but the scheduling of round is peak dumb. So we get to see four clubs play twice before we see Hawks v Bombers. How's your free extra exposure for those clubs?

Carlton supporters are the last ones who should be complaining about getting undeserving favourable treatment by the AFL. Best you sit this one out.

Yeah it's botched and a pretty boring way to start the season with only half the teams playing. A stunt by a new CEO to make it look like he's "doing something".

The right way to do it would be to move gather round alternating between NSW and QLD each year.

Supporters of teams that didn't play week 0 are annoyed because their team didn't play.

Supporters of teams that played week 0 are going to be annoyed when their team has a bye 2-3 weeks into the season.

Should just have spread round 1 over 2 weekends, with stand-alone night games on each night..

Week 1
Thursday- Swans v Dees
Friday - Brisbane v Essendon
Saturday Giants v Pies
Sunday - Gold Coast v Dogs

Week 2
Thursday - Carlton v Tigers
Friday - Port v Saints
Saturday - Cats v Hawks
Saturday Night- Freo v Crows
Sunday - North v West Coast

So the Giants get 3 byes this year?

Have had a think about this a little further ....

The rationale behind putting games into the northern states was smart but leaving 10-teams without a game at all was stupid.

Just call it RD 1 (instead of goddam "zero"), schedule the northern games as they have but put the other 5-games on at thew same time as well.

It was an unnecessary split of the teams and this bye next week is a joke.
