Round 19 Changes vs Carlton

Something else I'd put forward though. If you were playing in the WAFL, had a couple of solid games, played your role etc. wouldn't you be pretty dirty if you DIDN'T get a call up after that sort of performance by the established players? Sort of makes a mockery of the play your way in and out line otherwise doesn't it?

Also everyone is coming out and taking the easy 4 option. The point I raised was who would you drop if you HAD to drop six, if you assume that six are coming in after RTB interview, whether that happens or not...so be fair.

You can't drop everyone though and it's rare in the AFL to see wholesale changes. If Barlow's game was poor how about our leadership group's performances. I'd think only De boer was on par. I think those in the 22 that have had 3-4 poor-average games (Sylvia), and those just in last week and poor like Griff and Tabs are at risk and those at Peel who've had 3-4 good games are a chance. Obviously, 80%+ of changes will be just through established players back from injury/suspension though. In any case Barlow's not had 3-4 poor games in the season let alone in a row. Johnno has had two bad games but he's coming back from injury, is needed in the backline and has credits in the bank. Sorry, just re-reading, this post smacks of 100% Capt Obvious.

We could have used a few Robinsons on the weekend, skills aren't flash but he attacks the footy like a bull on crack and at least shows a level of commitment and effort you can''t question ala MDB. I still think Carlton have somewhat of a soft underbelly so it helps us.
Which is half my point. Mitch can fluctuate from week to week more than almost any other player. Sometimes I watch him and wish he was playing against us. He can spray the ball all over the place better than anyone. MDB is different in that he plays his heart out every game, knows his limitations and is never going to be quite the clanger machine. And I think you're right about about Carlton's underbelly.

I'd love to see Sheridan & Crozier play because I can see them both having a big future at the club, and they've both been pretty good at Peel, but hasn't Ross mention the two of them a few times in interviews as potential ins? I'm surprised Sheridan didn't get his spot back earlier for Sylvia.

BTW Cobbler I don't want to go to early but the Worst is getting in on the act too.

Lyon last night forecast the possibility of six changes for Thursday week's match against Carlton, with stars Hayden Ballantyne (suspension), Aaron Sandilands (back) and Stephen Hill (quad) expected to return.

Good luck

Well if the Worst are suggesting it then I guess I better just role over now.

It is possible it could be 6, heck it could be 8. It was more in your tone that it would be 6.

Yeah I'd be surprised to tell you the truth if it was more than 4 just because it would take a couple of bold calls. Say we beat Carlton with Sheridan and Crozier in the team, then in theory they should stay to play the Cats which is a massive game. I mean everyone had a good old roll on the ground about my Barlow/Neale/D.Pearce theory, maybe with good reason but no one addressed the other big one in there which was who goes for Ibbo if McPharlin plays? I had either Johnson or Spurr as an out and no one really had a go at it.

Wouldn't rule it out though and as I said above if you were Sheridan and Crozier you'd be feeling pretty miffed if you couldn't get a game after that performance.

Kinda hope that Mora gets back to the sub role for a week or two if they pick him. He is just perfect for the role at the moment, but I guess he has learnt a lot from the last game.

Ah... didn't Lyon say Walters was aiming to come back for this game after the bye and without going via the WAFL?

They are back on Friday for a training session and obviously he still has another week to build up for it.

RTB said during the pre-game interview on the weekend that he may return via Peel.

I don't understand the idea to play Morabito as a specialist sub. Sure it was right to ease him back into it over a couple of games, but if he isn't fit enough for a full game of AFL Ross Lyon style, wouldn't it be better to select a young player that is?

He is versatile, he is probably only 90% fit, and can break lines which is crucial for a sub.

He can play in pretty much any position on the field and has shown that when coming on as the sub, he can have a big impact. I think in the finals he will be the sub, but I think Walters will play a match of two as the sub before finals.

Surely Sylvia has to get the boot for someone like Crozier.
deBoer. He moves from the sub to starting 21. Plays in Cols position. Col gets dropped and either Sheridan or Croz get a sub gig. However, if Walters and Hill are back, it will probably be Walters sub, Hill in and deBoer in the forward line.

Walters probably isn't coming back for this match, RTB said that. My guess is the match against Hawthorn.

Forgotten man Slivagni would have to be a very good chance of playing this week .
If Johnson or Mcpharlin are slightly under an injury cloud .
Silvagni is also versatile so if Pavlich needs help he can swing forward replacing Sylvia .
Alex give great effort where ever he plays which is more than you can say for Sylvia as well .

I really hope one of these two get a game, they were both in the team at the start of the season and were rightly dropped due to us getting our best team back together. To their credit though they've gone back to the WAFL and played well each week. Ross needs to show the established players that their spots our always up for grabs if they under perform.

This might sound a bit strange... If Sylvia gets dropped, can we see Alex Pearce gets a debut as a sub? I would love to see him play one game in the back line.

If Johnson and McPharlin are under an injury cloud then Alex Silvagni should play.

Are we serious people?

We've only got the month of August to prepare our assault for the flag and it's getting to the time where we need to be fielding our PREMIERSHIP team. I like Croz and Sheridan as much as the next man and believe they've got big futures long-term but we need to start fielding the battalion that will win the war; and I don't believe they are presently the key ingredients to the Fremantle Flagship 2014 auxiliary.

I can tell you who is that aren't currently in the side - Sandilands, Ballantyne, Walters, Hill and Ibbotson. We can all agree on those 5 guys.

I also believe that Griffin, Taberner and Sylvia do not belong in the 2014 Fremantle battalion. I'm still undecided on Morabito; he may yet prove the 2014 super-sub award.

The only other spot that could feature this year is an undisclosed second tall forward - and that battle could be between Apeness, Gumbleton, or Bradley.

The experimental days this year are over.

Interesting idea. Why though, would you play a tall as a sub?

.

I vote for this.
I only just caught up with the swans hawks game on replay tonight.
I don't believe there is any way our forward line could do what the hawks did, turning a 4 goal deficit into a lead in half a quarter of football in a high pressure game like that.
I guess it won't happen but I would love to see them say to Apeness or Gumbleton you are playing for the next 5 weeks no matter what, and have a crack at developing something different that might just win us this bloody thing.

In: MDB, Sandilands, Ballantyne and Hill are almost certainly coming back. Silvagni, Ibbotson and Apeness are maybes.

Out: Griffin, Taberner, Morabito, Sylvia. Maybe Mcpharlin and another player with a publicly unknown injury.

People say they want Morabito, but someone has got to go for the players coming in.

Watching that abomination of a game, it's amazing how much our forward half defense and defensive transition tightened up when de boer came back on.

No coincidence either.

Savage and co would have had a much tougher time waltzing it out of our forward line had de boer, mayne and balla all been there.

Saints had some evil voodoo sh!t working on their side that game. Everything they touched turned to gold and vice versa for us. But our non existent forward pressure and ineffective forward structure gave them a golden chance to get their confidence up.

And our clearance mids should hang their heads in shame. Got completely towelled up. Especially at centre clearances. Kept letting their men take front position and allowed free men outside the clearance to remain, allowing a quick break away when the saints invariably dug it out.
