It seems like it isn't Richmond and Hawthorn that should be arguing about who is big 4 *looks at Carlton*

To be honest the Hawthorn and Richmond s**t fight is probably less to do with fan base (as Richmond probably have a bigger fan base than Carlton anyway) and more to do with premiership success.

Richmond's lack of premiership success in comparison to fellow Big 4 members makes them vulnerable to upstarts like Hawthorn (who now have 2 more flags than Richmond despite being in the competition for 17 less seasons).

Carlton have been s**t for 20 years and they still have 4 more flags than Hawthorn, ditto Essendon.

Carlton could be s**t for another 20 years and its unlikely they'll drop out of the top 3 for premiership winners. If Richmond have another 20 years in the abyss they'll drop below Carlton, Essendon, Collingwood, Hawthorn, Melbourne and Geelong in 7th.

Yeah it was sort of a tongue in cheek comment poking fun at Carlton.

To be honest, premierships, particularly AFL premierships, matter more than some meaningless VFL term

So, 70,000 ahead of the Tigers hey!....If you allow for the attendance differentials due to our 4 games in Tassie (Max capacity 20, 000)....Then the resultant increase in our average attendances would likely push us close to number 1, with an added 100,000....Not to mention the highest attendances average.

Hawks are BIG 4 in every conceivable measurable category, other than the Flight-of-fantasy that is Tiger supporters heads.:D

A bit off the beaten track but if you look at the original 12 VFL teams, finalling is where its at...

2. Essendon (16 flags from 30 GFs) 64 Finals Series (54.23%) and 4 wooden spoons (3.3%) in 118 seasons
3. Collingwood (15 flags from 43 GFs) 80 Finals Series (68.7%) and 2 wooden spoons (1.6%) in 119 seasons
4. Hawthorn (12 flags from 18 GFs) 32 Finals Series (35.15%) and 11 wooden spoons (12.08%) in 91 seasons
5. Melbourne (12 flags from 17 GFs) 38 Finals Series (32.75%) and 12 wooden spoons (9.66%) in 116 seasons
6. Richmond (10 flags and 22 GFs) 36 Finals Series (33.33%) and 6 wooden spoons (5.55%) in 108 seasons
7. Geelong (9 flags and 17 GFs) 54 Finals Series (46.15%) and 5 wooden spoons (4.30%) in 116 seasons
8. Fitzroy (8 flags and 13 GFs) 29 Finals Series (29.0%) and 8 wooden spoons (8.00%) in 100 seasons
9. Swans (5 flags and 16 GFs) 40 Finals Series (33.89%) and 11 wooden spoons (9.48%) in 118 seasons
10. North Melbourne (4 flags and 9 GFs) 30 Finals Series (32.96%) and 13 wooden spoons (14.28%) in 91 seasons
11. St Kilda (1 flags and 7 GFs) 26 Finals Series (22.22%) and 27 wooden spoons (23.07%) in 117 seasons
12. W Bulldogs (1 flags and 2 GFs) 24 Finals Series (26.37%) and 4 wooden spoons (4.39%) in 91 seasons

If you look back to 1982...

1. Carlton (14 flags from 24 GFs) 51 Finals Series ( 59.30%) and 0 wooden spoons (N/A) in 86 seasons
2. Collingwood (13 flags from 38 GFs) 64 Finals Series (74.41%) and 1 wooden spoon (1.16%) in 86 seasons
3. Essendon (12 flags from 23 GFs) 44 Finals Series (51.76%) and 4 wooden spoons (4.71%%) in 85 seasons
4. Melbourne (12 flags from 15 GFs) 26 Finals Series (31.32%) and 9 wooden spoons (10.84%) in 83 seasons
5. Richmond (10 flags and 22 GFs) 32 Finals Series (42.66%) and 2 wooden spoons (2.66%) in 75 seasons
6. Fitzroy (8 flags and 13 GFs) 26 Finals Series (30.23%) and 6 wooden spoons (6.97%) in 86 seasons
7. Geelong (6 flags and 9 GFs) 36 Finals Series (41.86%) and 5 wooden spoons (6.02%) in 83 seasons
8. Hawthorn (4 flags from 6 GFs) 10 Finals Series (17.25%) and 11 wooden spoons (18.96%) in 58 seasons
9. Swans (3 flags and 11 GFs) 32 Finals Series (37.20%) and 8 wooden spoons (9.30%) in 86 seasons
10. North Melbourne (2 flags and 6 GFs) 13 Finals Series (22.41%) and 13 wooden spoons (22.41%) in 58 seasons
11. St Kilda (1 flags and 4 GFs) 15 Finals Series (17.85%) and 20 wooden spoons (23.80%) in 84 seasons
12. W Bulldogs (1 flags and 2 GFs) 12 Finals Series (20.68%) and 3 wooden spoons (5.17%) in 58 seasons

The gap between the big three and the rest has always existed although it was really Collingwood, Carlton and the rest (headlined by Essendon / Richmond / Geelong) up until the early 1980s...

Geelong, Collingwood, the W Bulldogs and St Kilda have really underachieved. Geelong really should have 12-14 flags, Collingwood 18-20 and the Saints / Dogs 4-6 with a reasonable strike rate of finals to premierships...

This has aged well.......
