Toast Welcome to St.Kilda - ISAAC KEELER!

List needs and interviews heavily influence the guys certain clubs do and don’t include in the final orders they take to a draft. It’s not all down to raw talent - if it was, Keeler goes top 25 in that draft I’d say.

That and in Poo's case I think him being so young was a big factor in him sliding just enough to get to us. If he had been at the older end I think he would have been gone .

1) Lack of physical aggression / competitiveness

2) We were only ever taking 2-3 players in the draft and we have far more pressing needs in the midfield and defence than up forward

3) He is not perceived by our club as having a future as an AFL ruckman - purely a forward who can chop out in the ruck

4) Ignoring all of the above, it’s possible that he just wasn’t in the top 50 odd on our overall talent order for the draft. The lack of nomination supports this.

FYI: a response from the Crows board re my question about why they didn’t take Keeler.

If that's correct.
1: He's still young, and its probably not a deal breaker. Unskilled players need to be really really really competitive to get a gig. But yeah he could be the next Spencer White. If he turns out good its an amazing pick up for us though.
2: Good, we already took 2 highly likely Mids and a defender this draft and we aren't really lacking anywhere else.
3: I tend to agree, but if Heath keeps developing and we still have Ro, he makes a decent replacement for shortass Hayes (26YO ) in a few years or he can push his way in sooner. Ruck/Fwd is more and more becoming a specialist role, rather than a second ruck who can't kick goals (Campbell or even Marshall ) , or a forward who is dismal in the ruck. ( Josh Bruce).
4: He went at 44, so maybe he wouldn't have been top 50 except for us. If he'd slid all the way to Rookie , they'd have been able to take him as a catB rookie i think, so it would have been worth nominating him on that basis. So i still suspect there was some sort of agreement between Adelaide and Keeler that they weren't meant for each other.

I think becuase they did not nominate him , Adelaide would not have been able to take him as a Cat B, they could have taken him as Rookie only. never the less, many pick 44's don't make it as an AFL player, and it will be a big bonus if he does.

Nah, 100% it’s Paddy.

Go watch some older Paddy clips. Plays as a CHB/Key forward and then moves into the ruck.

They move the same way. Same direct path through contests etc.
Just watched a 10 minutes highlight reel of Isaac on You Tube
This guy has got talent galore, can't believe Crows knocked him back

I think it's going to be mental for Keeler. It will need to click that he could be special, but he will have to work for it. if he doesn't , he will just be another kid 'who could've, should've'.

I love this video was posted to the official AFL YouTube channel 2 months ago with the title “Welcome to the Crows: Isaac Keeler” 😂

Also, I note in some of the first few highlights young Isaac is giving an equally young James Van Es a little bit of a touch up 😄

💯 thought this guy was gone when the crom traded into the pick before us. Why would they not want this guy
The only thing they must've thought that his attitude wasn't into hard work.

I am really excited to see this guy play. I am sure it has been mentioned earlier. In his highlights. One contest in the midfield, he gets the ball in front of two players. Turns back, invades a players rolls around and hits a player lace out on the lead. Then those couple of moments where he looks like buddy.

Ross mentioning that we need to improve our spine. Along with having Max Heath who from what I have heard has the skills and mindset. These potentially could be two big puzzle pieces in our team.

I think it may have been more an educated gamble.
Remember they traded out for Rankine (understandably).
They already have Thilthorpe, so Keeler is not exactly a need.
Then they traded back in for the pick before us (#43?), for a needs player.
The next pick (ours) was effectively #40.
Meaning they got him for free anytime thereafter.
I reckon that they made an educated decision that we would not pick him (given we were the only ones who could at that point).
However, saying that, it is pretty self evident that 18 clubs didn’t think him worthy of a pick any earlier than where he went.
Hopefully, 18 clubs are wrong.

Not even nominating him pre draft probably shows they weren't going to pick him no matter what. Does seem odd.

Got a PM from someone close to Keeler ( son played with him). According to him Adelaide's academy was terrible and Keeler learnt nothing. Changed schools so he could play SANFL and learned. Apparently he and Adelaide didn't get on. Nothing to do with his attitude, but he is raw and needs work.
Take that for what it is.

That soundsmore like it. Someone else had mentioned bad academy as well.

I hope so, but that story ignores what value the other 17 teams placed on him; and what we can definitively say is that none had him marked as earlier than #43.
Raw but talented, probably.
Not sure we can say much more than that.
BTW: aren’t you supposed to be slumming it in Indonesia somewhere? Surely there’s more exciting things up there than BF? Lucky bugger.

Ever been to Jakarta? Not the touristical capital of the world. Air-conditioned hotel room with 37 Indo channels and Warner Bros, so there you go.

Well technically it means no club valued him at their latest pick before pick 43.
Like how Phillipou slipped to us but that doesn't mean no team rated him top 10.

Either way, don't care, I'm happy we have him and hope we he can reach his potential with us, he looks very exciting.

i hope the club get Paddy down to help him as a mentor.

That'd be fabulous but it sounded like Paddy's dropped off the radar at the moment when I was talking to Isaac at the sponsor function the other night. Fair enough he wants some time and space after 15 years in the system

I know it’s small but the comments from the Pou about Keels having more X factor then him stood out to me. Team mates know sometimes better the coaches, they see the skill the work not just in games but at training. The Pou doesn’t seem like someone who would give undue praise either.
