obviously foods with Low Glycemic Index, but what meals or combinations specifically have worked for people?

I often feel I'm not maximising my full potential due to insufficient fuel in the tank. Carbohydrate loading is a method but I wouldnt mind finding out some specific advice from the well informed bigfooty members.
cheers

For me it's got to be something filling so that not too much $ is spent at the footy, but something that leaves enough room for the taste craving of a beautifully cooked Four'n'Twenty, which seems to be cooked better at the footy than anywhere else.

Also good to get a feed on the way to the game, to absorb however many beers will be consumed. Reheated pizza before leaving the house, or Hungry Jacks on the way in or, if meeting someone at a pub, a plate of fish & chips/wedges washed down with a few starter pots.

Personally a couple of serves of some sort of pasta the night before the game, or a rice based meal.

Drink loads of water, before, during and after the game.

This helps me last out the game, and I consider it to be pretty effective.

"As far as pre-game strategies, there isn’t anything magical there. It takes a consistent eating program to ensure good performance on game day – no magic elixirs can remedy a week of poor training and nutrition." - John Berardi, leading sports nutritionist

I wouldn't do anything out of the ordinary on game-day, stick with foods you know go down well - it comes down to personal preferences. For me a balanced meal i.e. a serve of protein (i.e. egg omlette/chicken/tuna) + low GI carbs (i.e. oats and fruit/WW pasta/rice + salad) + fat (olive oil/nuts), 2-3 hours before the game and then sipping on a protetin shake + gatorade combo shake throughout the warm-up, game and cool down, does the job.

How nice! You got answers for both playing AND watching!

I was half cut when replying the other day, so the playing/umpiring aspect honestly didn't occur to me - I thought it was about food to supplement a day's footy drinking. My reply was dead serious at the time. :o

sometimes l used to hide some lollies near the bench a bit of a sugar fix to last out the last quarter :)

Our club has a big tub for half time :thumbsu:

I just have 4 slices of toast and an OJ or Powerade. Then Powerade before and during the game.

I don't touch water

For a match that starts at 2pm this is my gameday diet.

9.00 - Wake Up. Eat 4 weet-bix with milk and a vitamin tablet.
11.00 - A banana and Milo bar
12.30 - A ham and salad roll and another banana.

I also consume 3 litres of water and 600m of gatorade between the time i wake up and when i step out for my match at 2pm. I have been told however that i should not have the gatorade before the match.

However I think the most important part of preperation is the food/water consumer the night before. I always eat a large serving of pasta the night before the match and drink at least 2 litres of water while watching friday night footy.

sounds like an AFL players diet before a game

I have given up doing all the right things before a game. So far this year I had the pasta, water, banana's and protein shakes leading up to the games and played like shit. Then last week had a bad friday night and couldn't give a stuff about my game saturday so i ate a hot dog and drank a 600ml coke right before the game and went out and got best on ground. Maybe try that lol.

I just have a banana smoothie before about 3 hours before the game. apart from that i eat hardly anything. maybe a small sandwich or something. Pasta the night before is good

One thing I can tell you is that rice is good..but not rice with meat..I started feeling it coming up my stomach about half way through the 3rd quarter and felt like crap.

Weetbix never worked for me, bad on the stomach.

A Mars bar is also good, but I dont take it usually.

Gatorade never did me any good before a match, made me feel sick for some reason, its much better if you have Powerade or Gatorade during a game, it works for some ppl, doesnt for others.

I can drink Powerade, feel refreshed and feel great. I drink a Gatorade and I feel bloaty and dehydrated still

Sex.. It was a few years ago but people of the time said that sex before a game was bad, so this little black duck (Who was captain of his club) obliged and was BOG.

I had a small McChicken meal with water last week before playing. Needless to say, I was running around with no idea.

I love to go to Cafe Bravo, at West Lakes before a game at Footy Park, and have either Anti Pasto or Gnocci. Then head over to Cold Rock for an icecream with gummi bears on the way! YUMMY DELICIOUS!
