Thought it would be interesting if we all made our top 10 predictions for both men and women before the tennis season got underway. Will be interesting to look back at the predictions at years end to see how close we all were.

ATP:

1. Rafael Nadal
2. Novak Djokovic
3. Roger Federer
4. Andy Murray
5. Nikolay Davydenko
6. Juan Martin Del Potro
7. Gael Monfils
8. Joe-Wilfried Tsonga
9. David Nalbandian
10. Gilles Simon

WTA:

1. Serena Williams
2. Jelena Jankovic
3. Ana Ivanovic
4. Dinara Safina
5. Maria Sharapova
6. Venus Williams
7. Elena Dementieva
8. Caroline Wozniacki
9. Agnieszka Radwanska
10. Victoria Azarenka

Nadal
Murray
Federer
Tsonga
Djokovic
Del Potro
Monfils
Simon
Gulbis
Davydenko

Gulbis should be pushing up there. He's got all the shots, it's just mentally he goes missing sometimes but if he gets it right he is so so dangerous. Murray will definately push up, I'm expecting he'll win his first slam this year. I reckon Tsonga's a chance as well provided he's fit. Fed will have a solid year, I don't know if he has what it takes to get back to Number 1. There's a few youngsters all lining up now. Djokovic- it's not that I don't rate him, but I just think Tsonga and Murray will overtake him. They both don't have many points to defend early in the year I think- Tsonga due to his injury and Murray didn't do that well IIRC. Del Potro had a stunning run mid-late last year. Already in the top 10, expect him to start getting deeper in the slams, that should be his main goal. Monfils is a tricky one. He was a top top junior. I've always liked him but he's got to show it all to the real world now. SHowed some pretty good signs late last year as well, hopefully he'll kick on even more. He's the one I'm most excited about regarding the next gen of young guns. He's got all the shots and tricks, he's just got to start working harder and tweak a few things. Simon is a very underrated player, beat all the top 3 players last year and on his day can play some scintillating tennis. Really came of age last year, this year he'll consolidate. Rounding out the top 10 is Davydenko, has been a very solid player for a number of years now and I can't see it changing.

I'll add in a smokey as well- Marin Cilic. Had a great run at the AO 08 where he beat some quality players. He's top 30 at the moment I think but has the potential to be much higher- he's only 20. He's a big big guy but moves around the court really well. Solid strokes off both wings and has a pretty big serve.

1. Nadal
2. Murray
3. Federer
4. Djokovic
5. Davydenko
6. Nalbandian
7. Simon
8. Del-Potro
9. Monfils
10. Tsonga
Soderling, Gulbis, Roddick, Verdasco, etc are also chances

2nd'ed :thumbsu:
Only one im not sure on is nalbandian...
Would love to see Tsonga or Monfils up there...

Nalbandian always had the game. He just doesn't have the application though. I think it was the end of 2007 where he owned Federer a few times in a row and beat all the top players. He just doesn't have the application to do it consistently. Still a gun player though, will be interesting to see what shape he is in this pre-season cause last pre-season he came back I remember he didn't look too great.

Nadal should stay 1
Federer/Murray to battle out 2
Djoko for 4th

Federer is clearly not as dominant as previous years but the guy made 3 Grand Slam Finals and a semi final, hardly a player on the decline. Mind you he doesn't have many 'wins' to defend this year so he could pick up some more points and push for number 1 again, but i think he over that 'phase' ... its all about slams now.

1. Nadal
2. Murray/Federer
3. Murray/Federer
4. Novak

The rest is a lottery. Players to watch :-
- Tsonga
- Gulbis (this guy has some shots)

1. Nadal
2. Murray
3. Federer
4. Djokovic
5. Tsonga
6. Del Potro
7. Davydenko
8. Monfils
9. Gulbis
10. Cilic

The top 4 should all be set. I think Tsonga and Del Potro will be the biggest challengers to the big 4 this year. Davydenko will have his usual consistent season. Monfils, Gulbis and Cilic to be the big improvers.

Aus Open: Murray def Monfils
French Open: Nadal def Djokovic
Wimbledon: Nadal def Federer
US Open: Murray def Del Potro

Nadal

^If any seed was to withdraw, well, let's jsut say I'm not exactly sad that it was Davydenko.

1. Nadal
2. Murray
3. Djokovic
4. Federer

Some big calls:

Tsonga overrated in terms of where he will finish in my opinion. Probably around 8-10.

I think this will be the year where Monfils makes an assertion toward the top players in the world on a more consistent basis at grand slams (hopefully he can remain injury-free).

Also believe this will be the last year in which Federer can win a grand slam(s).

Well Monfils defeats Nadal in Qatar... He looked absolutely amazing. If he can keep this up he won't just be in the top 10, he'll be knocking on the door for a top 5 spot.

I watched Federer V Murray in the Dubai semi today. I think Fed will have retired by end of 2009.

He has completely lost interest in fighting or persevering. threw the towel in after losing the second set and behaved disgracefully in the third simply lying down when not coasting to a win. As usual more winners than his opponent which his sheer talent and genius more or less guarantees but no effort at all to deal with adversity.

1. Murray
2. Djoko
3 Nadal. His body will not last.
4.......all also rans.

Pretty close to mine although would make a couple of slight changes:

1) Murray
2) Nadal
3) Tsonga
4) Federer
5) Djokovic
6) Monfils - big watch on this guy.....could be a freak.
7) Del Potro
8) Simon
9) Nalbandian
10) Davydenko

The French should win the Davis Cup with their depth of talent.

I think Murray is being overhyped and number 1 is a bit too much for him.

1. Nadal
2. Murray
3. Federer
4. Djokovic
5. Tsonga
6.Simon
